Poll: Do you lower the difficulty setting if you find a game too hard? (Somewhat Skyrim related)

Today, after dying several times in Skyrim, I've decided to lower the difficulty setting from Adept to Apprentice.Because frankly, even though I do like the occasional challenge, I play games to have fun. And if I'm getting really frustrated from playing a game, I'm not having fun, this kind thing of kills the experience for me.

So what about you guys? What games have you played that you lowered the difficulty setting mid-game and for what reason? Or do you like to increase the difficulty if a game is too easy?

F**k no, I toughen up and take another crack from a different direction. Experiment until you find your path to success. You don't improve if you just make things easier when you're stuck and having trouble. And when you do succeed, the effort put into your trial makes the victory even sweeter.

For Catherine, oh yes. I will never, ever, ever play it on Normal *ever* again. It made me want to hurl my controller across the room so much that I feel it was bad game design to make the "normal" difficulty that darn hard.

my answer is lowering difficulty is for pussies... i have made it my mission to play games on the hardest possible settings available to me, without changing difficulty.

If I get stuck on a particular part of a game, its just a case of find any strat guides after a number of failed attempts (I'd say between 7 to 10).

If someone will tell me how to do a spoiler thing then I'll share my example of the only occasion I've ever lowered the diff in Baldurs gate (because that game on hardest diff is near impossible)

It all depends. I used to play games like Baldur's Gate, Quake, Unreal and TIE Fighter on Hard until I really got blocked, that happened on TIE Fighter a couple of times. I've never tried Hard Difficulty on NFSU2 or Emperor:Battle for Dune, assuming there is a difficulty slider for NFSU2

I second this , i start most my games on hard to begin with . In games like oblivion or fallout , i start them on normal never below , i have too much pride for that. Plus i like a good challenge , the harder the game , the more determined i am to beat it . I completed IWBTG dispite all my friends giving up , just because it was challenging , ( plus bragging rights). Catherine i started on normal ( hard is brutal but i managed it afterwards ). The reason for this is something my father said to me when i was a child .*Cue flashback*

DAD: what are you doing?
Me: playing contra 3
Dad: really , what difficulty are you playing on?
Me: easy
Dad: hahaha you're such an amature son, real men play on hard.( i swear these were his exact words)
Me: but *sad face
Dad: it's okay when you get older you'll be able to play on hard like me *walks away*
me: ... *resets snes and restart on hard*

Since that day when i was 6 or 7 i have never played a game on easy again. And seriously i thank my dad for saying that to me on that day , i can enjoy a decent challenge now.

Yes, I do lower the difficulty. If I'm dying to the point I'm not enjoying the game then yes I will.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

I did it with Dragon Age, and probably will with Skyrim.

It depends on why I am not doing well. Am I still learning combos (see Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta). Then no I keep the current difficulty.

Am I just wanting the story and thus rushing through rather than getting xp from side missions? Then yes down goes the difficulty.

Does the difficulty add anything or just make bulletsponges? If it addes something I will also keep the difficulty.

Well, I'm new to TES and didn't find Skyrim very hard. Gets hard when the enemies immune to your damn focused spells but still possible.
Anyway, I usually don't decrease difficulty as I feel like I must defeat the bustard who killed me.

These days I tend to play games on the easiest difficulty and have the most fun as a result.

Genres that I naturally excel at like RPG's and RTS's I'll leave on default or increase to hard. In Skyrim's case I've kept the default settings and will likely maintain them.

Once i've picked a difficulty I stick with it for the whole game but i'll usually have a 2nd playthrough on the hardest setting

I can think of three instances:
-One of the God of War games. I was having trouble with a certain part and kept dying, and started becoming impatient with the reloading screens. So while I was impatiently hammering away at the buttons while the game was reloading, I accidentally agreed to lower the difficulty when it snuck in that choice.

-Mass Effect: The first game. I tried Insanity difficulty and wasn't really enjoying it. Hardcore is perfect. Insanity is tedious. Enemies have way too much health and like to spam Barrier and Immunity on themselves.

-Dragon Age 2, Legacy DLC: The Corypheus fight. He does this thing where he spits fire out to his sides and spins around. You need to avoid the flames. Then he adds a rock maze you need to get around, then electricity in the rock maze. I had a ton of trouble (on Hard) because my companions kept standing in the flames, and I had no healer (killed the mage we will not speak of at the end of Act 3). I tried micro-managing my party's movement (by selecting the "Move To" option) to keep them out of the flames, but it was just too tedious. So I just turned the difficulty way down to get the fight over with.

Oddly enough, I just went through Legacy again and my party did stay out of the flames on their own. I didn't have to lower the difficulty that time. I have no clue what was different...

I lower it too if it's frustrating. If I'm finding it easy I usually keep it where it is if I'm still having fun. If I think I can have more fun cranking it up a bit then that's what I do.

don't lower the difficulty in skyrim.
go get better items, learn to smith and craft yourself insane gear it will make the game easier without touching the difficulty

my dragon armour warrior has 500 armour and health at this point, im actually considering upping the difficulty because nothing less than a boss creature can even hit me reliably
( normal mobs do scratch damage at best )
