It heavily depends on the gameplay for me. The more specialized classes and jobs are,
the more immersion and role-playing is involved.
Sadly, a lot of RPGs come to a certain point where it is totally unimportant as what you started as almost anyone can do the same more or less.

Looking at MMORPGs, I guess the most visible reason for this is the balancing,
but it also happens in single-player games quite often.

So to put it short, the more specialised the character/class is,
the better (and more fun) it is to role-play for me.

The only RPG's I've found that have let me RP satisfactorily were...

Never Winter Nights 2
Mass Effect
Baldurs Gate 2
Planescape Torment
Fallout 2

Out of those Planescape and Mass Effect have had the best "Roleplaying" component.

Everything else kind of falls short. Especially Fallout 3 and Oblivion, there really isn't much by way of RP there.

There's only a handful of games I'll RP in, just about all of them are in the TES series. Though the big one is Daggerfall with Morrowind close behind. My only complaint is that it is too easy in most RPGs to become a Jack-of-all-trades/Master of None.

Fallout 3, is just too...black and white when it comes to it's good and evil, which makes it...tend to be hard to stay a neutral mercenary without either going on a killing/stealing spree to lose karma.

MMO's are a completely different beast...interacting with other humans will usually be a better experience(like tabletop games, e.g. D&D) if they know how to play properly and actually RP.

In short, yes depending on the game.

I'm playing through mass effect a second time at a slower pace. It's so easy to get caught up in it.

Only certain RPG's have really connected with me and I RP'd with the story. Most of them were during the PS1's reign of ownage so to say and I have yet to have a modern one really bring me into what I felt with those.

I don't make up crap that isn't in the game, but then I don't play it solely for the FPS element or whatever, I play the in game character.

The only game I've managed to RP in actually isn't an RPG at all, Soul Calibur IV.
I know it's kind of weird, but let's just say I really liked the character creator.

I role play, but I almost always role play as a greedy bastard who does whatever it takes to get more money. Bit of an anti-hero. :p

Not really. I like RPGs, but for the extra complexity, not the role-playing. I generally try to make the most efficient party/character possible rather then try to experience different gameplay styles. Very rarley do I try multiple personalities or put curiosity ahead of strength. In the more customizable ones likes Fallout 3, that try to force you into role-playing, I generally do what I think I would do in reality.

Well, to defend your friend, OP, it's pretty hard to truly roleplay in a game like Fallout 3 - or even pretty much any single-player video game RPG if they're not really designed around it. Sure, there's the dialogue options, but those are usually pretty well pigeon-holed into "good", "evil", and "neutral" choices. But to do stuff like your coin-flipping thing is, frankly, kind of weird. It's like talking out loud to yourself or something - the enjoyment that's derived from good roleplaying is the interaction with and reaction of other characters and players, I think.

I used to play MUDs... which is pretty much roleplaying. That was about a decade ago though. In games like Fallout where you have the choices of what to say, I usually read it out loud and then listen to the characters answer back. Which might seem kinda crazy, but what the hell... makes it more fun for me :)

I've been DMing since the age of eight. I act as part of my living. I come up with alternate backstories for things that don't need them, canon or no.

Asking me if I RP is like asking Tiamat if she's evil.

I find it kind of hard to RP on single player games, as the NPCs are just too static in most cases.

It's much easier, in my opinion, to do it in MMOs, with other people. I was on an Ultima Online RP server for almost 2 years, and I had brief stints of RP in Guild Wars. I've yet to try one of the RP servers for WAR, but I'm gonna try it eventually

While playing a P&P RPG there is no other decent way to play for me. If you aren't in character then you're just throwing numbers around.

When playing an video game then yes, I like to get into the mindset of my character. Make choices that my character would make. Unfortunately I'm very bad at this.

I usually start out evil then end up swinging to the good side. In fallout it was the 'Others' quest that swung me to the side of good.

I will create a persona and use that as a handicap for my character. Its kind of a quasi-RP. It provides me with the ability to ask myself what would my character do in this situation or what would I do in this situation. Later after I beat it I then go though and play Thieving SoB.

Well, I never play "mmo" games, but when I do, I usually never RP
Pen and paper rpgs, those are a whole different story, I always get the "Best RP" exp bonus"
