Jesus h. christ, the level of judgmental condescension is off the charts in this thread.

OT: wouldn't make a difference either way to me. I like the smell but not enough to find it "attractive" and there is nothing about the image that specifically appeals to me. That said one the the most common things my core group of friends does when hanging out is smoke hookah, so she would certainly fit in better with my existing friends if she enjoyed that. As for my own habits, I smoke occasionally (like 1 pack every 1-2 months) because I like the taste/smell of the tobacco and the effect of the nicotine, but I would stop if a girl I really liked asked me to. Or if they ever legalize pot for that matter.

Yeah, some people get really high and mighty about smoking.
I have no problem with people disliking it, it's the smugness I can't stand.

I used to know a guy who, on more than one occasion, would come out into the smoking area where I was smoking away from everyone else, yank my fag out of my hand/mouth, throw it on the ground and look at me like "you're so welcome."

Can you imagine if I did that to a chubby person in a fast food place?
I'd get punched and rightly so.

I don't know, some of the language people use when describing people who smoke seems a little unnecessary.

No. Definitely not.

I'm very over-sensitive to smells, tobacco makes me nauseous. As do many other smells, I don't find smelling like perfume attractive either.

However, in a fictional context, maybe. If it's not realistic but fits the style, maybe.

In fiction, hell yeah smoking is attractive. It grants characters a devil-may-care attitude.

In real life it's no more attractive or unattractive as drinking beer, eating snacks, picking your nose, or any other bad habbit. The smell I'll admit would be the biggest turn off though. And I say that as someone who used to smoke in the past, so I'm fully aware of how that shit sticks to everything. The worst place for me to have to smoke back then was in a smoking lounge, because that place always reeked like a thousand year old tomb.

Surprised by all the "it kills you so it's not attractive". It's the danger that makes smoking unattractive. On the other hand there's nothing more unattractive than someone thinking about what will happen to them 20 years into the future, and conducting themselves based on that. So I don't buy all the "my partner will have yellow teeth when we're both grandparents" arguments. Most people find living for the moment sexy.

I don't smoke, by the way.

Is it really that unattractive to want the best for your future though? I call that living for the moment shit stupid as do a fair amount of other people. Seriously, I don't think anyone who laughs smoking off as nothing knows what they're talking about; watching someone you love die a slow and agonising death because they smoked is harrowing. The most annoying and worrying thing is that so many smokers don't think it'll happen to them either, but it will - eventually, maybe not now but in 20 or 30 years it will. I see so many young people smoking these days and I feel like going up to them and shaking them silly because it's frustrating how stupid and cavalier they're being with their own lives and health, but I don't because I know it's none of my business. I think it's terribly sad really, not just for them but for their loved ones who will have to watch them die.

While smoking used to be romanticized and seen as a sign of maturity, I tend to see it as a sign of weakness and lack of willpower.

However, it depends on their age. If they are from older generations then I don't think much of them; it was part of their culture and they're just sort of "victims" of lack of information, though I shake my head at people who deny the cons or make little effort to at least try to stop.

If you are younger (no real specific age, maybe mid-twenties to 30?) and you smoke, I can't help but lose a decent chunk of respect for them and think they are incredibly stupid. There is absolutely no benefit from smoking, and the health benefits have been around long enough that anyone who is that young and smoking is basically stupid enough to be saying "Look at me, I'm causing permanent damage to my body, weeeeeeee!".

So to get that out of the way, if you are a very infrequent or social smoker I'm not really bothered by it, but otherwise it repulses me. :/
who called many of us incredibly stupid. We don't call those who don't smoke anything nasty, so for them to start it is completely unjustified.

I hope you laid that ************ out with a two-by-four. That seems awfully harsh. :/

Eh, I used to hate smoking before I met somebody whose parents smoked herbal cigarettes in every room of the house - he had it all over his clothes and reeked of it. Eh...things could be worse, ya know? Most people in this part of Scotland just wear thick sweaters and smoke pipes, which isn't too bad. In fact, it's pretty neat-o.

As an image thing, yeah. The most recent example for me would be when Bigby Wolf looked badass every time he would light up. On a personal level though, not really, and sometimes it's a turnoff when you smell someone's breath. I can handle the smell of smoke on most occasions, so it's not really that big of a deal.

Turns me off, because I'll have to endure the stink. I'm used to coping with it, but if I had the choice I would rather not have to.

You know how you rarely run across women smoking in porn and how you start looking at other porn the moment you do?

Well there you go.

I just kind of laughed it off, I didn't really know what else to do.

React any other way and you just tend to validate people's "petulant smoker" perceptions.

It's an odd dichotomy... I find smoking itself a fairly unattractive habit (cigarettes, anyway. I'm fine with one or two other types of smoking), yet most women I find attractive smoke. There's a certain set of attitudes and habits that allow a person to be (relatively) physically fit and hygienic without being emotionally high-strung or constantly uptight... and apparently they make most people vulnerable to that particular addiction.

But of course.

I mean smokers are the worst people in the world, didn't you know???

No, when i see woman/girl smoking, it's just NOPE from me and all attraction that had been there before is gone in an instant...
I've kissed too many smokers to want to kiss anymore in the future...

Edit: I would like to say it doesn't bother me THAT much. I wish people would just smoke some higher quality tobacco than what is in almost every premade fag.
