a little morbid I know, and I'm sure this must have been done a few times, but do you think, all things considered that the human race, deserves to survive as a species?

now I'm not asking if you think we should die tomorrow, I just thought, since I don't ever want kids, what's the worst that could happen? well obviously if no one had kids then the human race would gradually die out, I guess my question is, is that really such a bad thing?

what does everyone think?

I'm gonna say no, I don't want to sound like the guy who hates everyone, I love the people that I know (most of them anyway) but, well, what percentage of people would you say actually help us evolve? maybe 10% if that? it seems to me like for every great scientist or teacber tbere's a million living excercises in mouth-breathing dumb-f*ckery and, well if I were to look at humanity as an outside observer, I don't think I'd like what I saw,

in short I just think the human race is a sinking ship, not to sound depressed or anything I'm quite at peace with it

just wondered what everyone else thought

no...

no we are all fucking horrbile people and we should all die in the most painful horrific way..ESCEPIALLY the children

because I know Im personally responsible for all the horrbile things in the world /sarcasm

thease type pf things come up all too often in thease threads

I say stop thinking, go out side, get some fresh air, play a game, play with your dog, find somthing to laugh about...and stop being soo miserable

some things change, and some things stay the same..humans having problems will never change

Well the human race will get extinct someday . Let all things happen in due time . Like many species before us , we will all disappear , and a new species will be dominant . Thats how evolution works .

Now as for dying tmr . Well if the entire world disapears or if just i disapear i wouldn't be able to tell he difference ( since i would no longer exist in both cases ) , so i don't really care .

My God, I am so sick of the "Humans are bastards" shtick. I really am. Yes, we have flaws, but dammit we have done some pretty amazing things! Yes, I think we should survive, we owe it to ourselves.

'Endure' is a silly choice of word. I think you'll find that most people don't endure life.

The dinosaurs lived for millions of years in total harmony with nature. There was no wealth disparity, no wars, no change from tradition. According to all of our ideologies things were at a perfect state. The cosmos doesn't hold a hand over Earth just because life exists here, and sooner or later this planet is not going to be viable to support life. Should the only life we know of be extinguished or should we let it spread? Should earth become a dead rock amongst a universe composed almost exclusively of dead worlds or something different? If we desire the former we can wreck the place with nuclear weapons within the hour.

That's because you're part of the mass.

Our species has never advanced at as rapid a pace as we do now. 10% of 6 billion yields a larger total number of smartasses than 10% of 600 million, and it also leaves a far larger number of people supporting research and putting into action what the scientists need done.

That the human species is sinking is a foolish notion. I can understand that the flaws in civilization become more apparent once you approach perfection but ignoring context is not something one can be permitted to do when giving such a grand assessment of the human race while still expecting to be taken seriously.

WAIT. STOP. HOLD IT RIGHT THERE.

Name any other species that has a global network system that can transmit information to the other side of the planet in a split second that stores the entirety of their cultural and technological information on.

The internet alone is one of the most amazing things ever conceived, I think a race capable of that in only around 400 years of electricity being discovered in a usable form is a bit more deserving than some of its members might think. Give us another 100 and space exploration may be the new internet.

Oh, yes.
We walked on the moon. Despite not being alive at the time to see the broadcasts, I am told that that feeling of awe does not go away. Ever. Let's face it: no other species on this earth is going do something that amazing.

The trick is appreciating the things in life that you usually take for granted.

Don't be stupid. Because an incredibly small minority of people can genuinely be called bad or "evil" you think the entirety of humanity should be extinguished, for god sake man our schoolchildren are more educated than the most advanced scholars and scientists of antiquity, we have eliminated diseases, mapped out the very building blocks of life, landed on the moon, we have a probe roughly 10 Billion miles away from our home, which is a tiny blue pixel in it's camera.

All these achievements and more yet because of a genuinely small minority of people you believe the flame of humanity should be extinguished?

I pity you.

Not as a 'species' (implying we are animals), but humanity should press on - by what cosmic standard would anyone even hold us to judge whether we "deserved" to continue? God? Natural Selection?

I'm gonna say no, I don't want to sound like the guy who hates everyone, I love the people that I know (most of them anyway) but, well, what percentage of people would you say actually help us evolve? maybe 10% if that? it seems to me like for every great scientist or teacber tbere's a million living excercises in mouth-breathing dumb-f*ckery and, well if I were to look at humanity as an outside observer, I don't think I'd like what I saw,
But you can't look at it as an outside observer, which might be why you can easily convince yourself that we aren't worthwhile. Also, if you subscribe to the scientific worldview, sure, there's no point to human existence, so it wouldn't make a difference what happened to us. Fortunately, not everyone in the world does, so we have far more important capacities through which to grow and display greatness than biological evolution.

in short I just think the human race is a sinking ship, not to sound depressed or anything I'm quite at peace with it

I agree with your metaphor, however I think it is wrong to be "at peace with it". If every human being is a crew member on this ship, we need to call out to each person to react to the situation and take responsibility for keeping it afloat and headed in the right direction.

This. Everything must eventually come to an end, but I see no reason to hasten the demise of the only known sapient life-forms in the universe, with everything we've achieved. If we are lucky then rather than go extinct we will become something even greater.

Should the human race survive?

Survival isn't an opinion, it's a true fact of nature and existence.

If we should we will, if we shouldn't we won't.

Why not? It might be nice to see us live longer, perhaps we may even be the first (known) Earth species to populate another planet. But in all likelyhood, we'll probably just die out. Probably not from nuclear war, or from climate change, just from a gradual decline in our resources that will lead to mass famine and poverty. Of course, that doesn't really matter considering we'll probably all be dead by then.

So you mean that our ancestors, who had to endure Ice Ages, are simply a fake?

And we have the advantages of knowledge and technology. Refrigerators and ovens didn't just fall from the sky.
