So, some people I know are complaining that MC is getting achievements (which are, in their very nature, meaningless) before the game is even complete. I figured I'd poll the internets on this matter, and Escapist is the place to do it. So... Weigh in!

I think people are making a huge deal out of it all. Achievements are so common in games, why should I expect Minecraft's to be such a big fuss?

Getting? It already has them. 1.5 came out couple of days ago.

They aren't bad though. Why not add them? Don't like them, ignore them, simple as that.

I don't see how they could work in a game where you can literally destroy every block, really.

Explain how the achievements are meaningless.

And also, whether they come before of after the game is "finished" is irrelevant - notch has simply chosen to develop the game in an open environment.

Oh no! Adding things to a game that have no negative side and never affect anyone who doesn't want them! How terrible!

Well they're fun, so why not?

Still *Shrug* Its not like they actually do anything, so why would they be a bad thing?

Some people are terribly afraid of any influence from anything. They feel like since Minecraft is a completely open and free exploration game, then achievements giving you nudges in certain directions would defeat the purpose. This is, of course, completely idiotic.

I wish there was a way to turn them off. It bothers me, because I want my minecraft experience to be what I create, but I still want people who want them to enjoy them. So if there was a toggle option that would be great.....

Actually, it would be really cool if you could toggle all of the major updates in the final product....... I think that would make minecraft totally customizable and awesome.

Eh. Probably not. Most achievements would be those "You built your first pickax" achievements, which really aren't that special. The ones actually worth going for should be (and especially in a game like Minecraft) a reward in and of themselves, like building a giant doom fortress.

I think the point is moot seeing as there ARE already achievements... personally i think the stats part of the update is interesting. and the achievements give new players some kind of context to work with for the first <hour of play which is basically where most people are going to stop playing if they cant get into it... so its probably a good thing
