I enjoy the occasional anime, like Naruto, and Fullmetal Alchemist, however there are some I love like Lucky Star.

I've read that people in Japan are trying to take the term back and give it a positve connotation.

Otaku roughly translates to geek or nerd, so not an insult, at least not for me, I take being all 3 as compliments.

OT: Yes, but I'm selective. I don't watch shonen for the most part, I only watch/read humorous animanga or story driven ones. The World God Only Knows, Pandora Hearts, FMA:B, Death Note, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, et cetera. I don't mind Seinen though, like Claymore.

Well, I'm not an otaku ie. a shut in who does nothing but read manga and anime.

But I do like manga (got sick of anime) I actively read Bakuman, The Breaker, D.Greyman, Naruto (seriously awesome right now) and Bleach (piece of shit right now, let it die.)

I got sick of anime due to the fillers that inevitably come when the show catches up to the manga so I would always go read the manga. Just stopped bothering with the anime. Some stuff is worth watching of course like Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Gurann Lagann, Outlaw Star etc. but the ongoing stuff right now ain't great as far as I'm aware.

Happy for anyone to prove me wrong of course.

Yes, though mainly an anime fan. Though unfortunately, fewer and fewer series are actually any good these days...
Go watch Steins Gate.
Got everything that's been released thus far, but compared to that... how much shit is there in the current set of releases?

Though to be fair, at least some of the current season look halfway decent (or at least intriguing/interesting). Last season was downright crap...

I guess. But not really all that often.

I watch some weird anime with my brother sometimes and we laugh at it. Other times I will try to watch something actually decent, marathon that shit for like a day and then completely forget about it for a few weeks, then try to pick it back up and realise I no longer have any idea what has happened so far.

Manga is almost exclusively just weird crap that makes me laugh, though.

On occasion. I haven't read any manga for years and I don't watch anime beyond the perennial favourites (Death Note, Full metal alchemist etc) these days. It's a shame because I used to be quite into it.

Usagi Drop might be worth checking out.

It's almost tranquil in pace, and the artwork is fairly primitive, but the story seems worthwhile enough so far, despite slice-of-life generally not being my thing. Although maybe I'm just impressed by the fact that, contrary to one of the more annoying anime staples, it has as a main character a small girl that actually act the part, rather than being some diminutive precocious porn star in disguise.

Yup I do watch anime and I used to read manga (can't afford them anymore) although I'm not hardcore (there are many more animes I haven't watch).

I read and watch a fair amount of anime/manga but I wouldn't say that I'm obsessed with it. It's just an easy medium with a variety of stories.

I've got the first few episodes of that though my backlog seems to be mounting... Still haven't finished Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko (weird series...).

Usagi Drop sounds to be quite serious (at its core, anyway) as it addresses a vague part of Japanese societal norms, so even if I don't watch it now, I'm definitely getting all the episodes.

Huge Anime fan right here, and a complete shut-in, but I don't read a lot of manga.

My favorite shows are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Death Note, Evangelion, Bakemonogatari, and K-ON!.

Favorite studios are Shaft and Gainax.

I don't really have a favorite manga yet, but I've read and enjoyed Death Note, Elfen Lied, Uzumaki, and I just started reading Berserk and it's actually pretty fucking awesome. I never thought I would like it this much. My first manga was Ranma 1/2.

An odd question to ask but fair enough. I have read manga, watched the odd anime and have occasionally followed a series to its conclusion; but I am not particularly invested in either of them at all. This was largely down to my friend who was a Japan-o-phile without shame, who needless to say destroyed any serious interest I had towards anime/manga early on due to how often he would go on about it.

Well, it's pretty much the same as the term "nerd" in the West.
Originally derogatory slang, it was picked up by that particular subculture and turned into a positive label for its members.
Futaba, for example, is pretty big on this idea of "otaku superiority", similarly to how Western nerds have this idea that they're all the next Einstein and that the common folk just can't comprehend their genius.

Yes, I read/watch the odd manga/anime if it's good enough to pique my interests. But it's not like I'm so into it that I'm on the verge of being a weeaboo or anything.
So is nerd. but I can't be the only one who calls myself a nerd with pride. Meanings change from place to place, person to person, and over time
