Ok, for me the Genre never existed.
What did exist is Adventure Horror, [ I Realise the name survival horror was attributed to the genre and thereby through linguistics survival horror means what people think it means etc etc. I'm Breaking it down, bear with me ] By adventure horror i'm talking about.. well pretty much everything R.E. 1-3 [ havn't played 4 and 5 was too actiony for my liking ] and from what I can gather the Silent hill series is adventure horror too, I played condemned one and [ unfourtunatly ] 2 and find that they are exactly the same. Adventure horror is stricly linear , finding the right stuff to get to the next bit removing enemies in you way. This can be done REALLY atmospherically and be seriously bloody scary [ i like the look of that amnesia thing someone linked to, But it's not really "Survival" Horror. Now don't get me wrong I <3 Adventure horror I own R.E. 1-3 and own a ps1 just to play them [and MGS1] But;
What I would like to see in a survival horror game is the overulling objective of , suprise suprise , surviving with tonnes of obstacles creating the horror.
Lets use the haunted house example:
The game has you enter the house [ perhaps co-op surportive ] for whatever reason , curiosity , wealth whatever. From there you can see a hallway with 4 doors leading off it and at the end of the hallway is the stairs and above that the landing. Now when you open one door the game randomly selects a room tile compatible with the main floor [ now for any of you who have heard of or played the boardgame - betrayal at house on the hill this will be starting to sound familiar ] and then that room has doors leading off it etc. As you [ and possibly some friends ] explore the house you will discover items , have encounters and eventually discover something you weren't supposed to. The game will have selected one of however many scenario's based on either a random generator or what items/rooms have been discovered and your objective will now either be to stop whatever evil force you have awoken or just escape from the house, The game would have to have a decent combat system that's stacked against the survivor/s but definatly not impossible, as well ass intuitive movement and a nice, easily accessible inventory system and a decent damage system, with crippling injuries, aiming penalies for eye damage etc. And there you go A clear objective of survival with overriding tones of horror.

Another example
would be a randomly generated city [ or a city with random ammo/health spawns full of something [ Zombies/Vampires/Ghosts/Godzilla etc. ] and you have persistant damage and need to eat and drink and potentially sleep , while survivng whatever horror is beset upon you. The only problem with this is that the A.I for the Monsters woud need to be exceptionally brilliant to create moments of calm as well as relentless onslaughts and everywhere in between.

To me these are two examples of what wold make great, fun Survival Horror games - anyone know any real examples. Please for the love of whoever let me know!!!

If you want the scares of Silent Hill, no guns and barely visible monsters, try Penumbra. It's an independently made series with a slightly higher emphasis on puzzles and monster avoidance. It even has a few tricky mental plot twists.

But I will agree that things like Resident Evil are now completely missing the mark.
