I got in an arguement with my mum about if foods taste differently when you order the ingredients differently. I said they taste the same no matter what order, my mom says foods taste compleatly different when in different orders.

What do you think?

It really depends on the food. Something that has a strong flavor and is the first thing you eat, then it will overpower the other flavors, but that tends to happen anyways.

I will say, however, that the stability of some dishes is highly dependant on the order of the ingredients.

Depends on the food.

You think they taste the same? Try eating a pizza with the cheese cooked on under the tomato sauce.

Well that depends, are you putting the ingredients on at different times? Then yes. If its just a question of laying then no.

Yes, i think it makes a huge difference. The logical part of my mind says no, but my taste buds disagree

Yes, just look at Mexican food.
I mean, it's all the exact same thing, just in different order.

I think this is what taco bells business model is based on. Same five ingredients used in different combinations to make different products. I don;t really think it makes that much difference. Of course if you use varied amounts of each ingredient than there will be a difference in taste, but it's still the same five ingredients. Go to a taco bell and tell me I'm wrong.

edit the above post ninja'd me by two minutes. damn my slow typing!

Changing the order does make a difference on some foods. Foods with a lighter flavor like fish(some) but heavily flavored foods(naturally) are going to stay the same.

You know, I never bothered to find out. That's because I don't really care, but now that I think about it...no, not really. It depends on the food, thank you berethond you make a good point.

Hamburgers, hamburgers must be carefully layered so as to make sure that the first thing your tongue connects to is the sauce, the importance of this cannot be overstated.

it depends on the food.. When I have a sandwich however, if I have my way, I'm very particular about the layering of ingredients

Bread
Mustard
Meat
Cheese
Pickles
Lettuce
Mayonnaise
Bread

That way, the mayo flavours the lettuce and the pickles meld the cheese and lettuce together wonderfully, the meat protects the cheese from the mustard.

May sound silly, but I swear by it.

With some things the order of ingredients can be of vital importance (i'm guessing because of different chemical reactions taking place at different times) while others it matters not at all. Unless we're talking about actual layering like in sandwiches, cause then it could change what flavour hit you first.

For some foods for me order does make a difference, I don't think a sandwich or burger tastes any different depending on layering, but pasta or ice cream where every other taste is on top of a main one, layering makes a difference. (at least in what I taste first if not the taste itself)

When I put cheese on the bottom and top, it's different...

When I put spices on top instead of baking them in, it's different..
