Pretty easy thread, which game achieved its goal of being a retro style shooter better? I'll stay out of this as I've only played Doom 2016.

Which is what I should have done and for the same reasons but TOO BAD, voted for DOOM.

I haven't even played Doom and I'm going to say Doom. A first person game that focuses on melee combat...as it turns out, it feels really wonky to play. And the Mortal Kombat combo style controls were just dumb.

I've only played Shadow Warrior but based on what I've seen I'd say Doom is better at being an old-school FPS. Shadow Warrior's still a hell of a lot of fun though.

Retro -shooter-? Not Shadow Warrior. That game is a hack n slash with guns also in it for boss fights. Not a criticism by the way. Melee weapons in such games usually suck, but hacking demons is super fun.

Haven't actually played the new DOOM though but I really want to.

Got to say that Doom 2016 has the best single player campaign in a long, long time. Not sure I can think of any better. I thought that the glory kills would get old, but they have not.

Shadow Warrior is a low budget, cheaper game made by a much smaller studio. Of course Doom would walk all over that. Maybe see what Shadow warrior 2 is like? They appear to be putting a lot more into that title, now they're confident with the IP's performance.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Doom, while I really enjoyed shadow Warrior, it really drags badly near the end. Like some of the levels are 3 hours long and the berserker enemies are just a huge pain in the butt to deal with.

I can't really comment on which one is better since I haven't played Doom yet, but I think Doom reboot owes a lot to Shadow Warrior reboot. Shadow Warrior was a modernized version of the original, which was a clone of Doom. So in a way Shadow Warrior reboot was also a spiritual successor to Doom and all the games like it. Demons, lots of weapons, labyrinth levels and you had to find keys to unlock doors to progress further. It's very likely that id Software scrapped their original idea for Doom reboot (I think you've all seen that mess) after Shadow Warrior was released. So now we have this Doom.

What about Wolfenstein: The New Order? Or did we all forget about that game already?

Hell does nobody remember that there was a Rise of the Triad remake? I mean true that one wasn't really as good as the Wolfenstein, DOOM or Shadow Warrior games since their first iterations but I'd say that kinda sorta counts.

Doom (2016) is my vote. Shadow Warrior didn't gel with me all that well. It's not a bad game, but I see a lot more potential with the sequel. That said, it's from the same developer who did Hard Reset. They're re-releasing it on all platforms with an updated edition called Redux. Redux comes out on June 3rd; looking forward to it.

I'd say Doom trumps Shadow Warrior. Some of that may simply be having more resources though.

On the basic level, Dooms gunplay is vastly superior. Shadow Warriors actual guns always felt kind of meh.

Not to say that either is flawless. Doom has a slightly questionable emphasis on platforming elements for me that makes some sections drag, especially when secret hunting (**** you Argent Tower). For being a throwback to a game where you literally couldn't jump, its odd that they chose to heavily include an oft-reviled component of later shooters. The glory kills are cool, but a bit glitchy in implementation. Not in the sense that they fail, but getting the kill you want for challenge completions is dodgy at best. Since said challenges are locks for some of the best upgrades.... though.

Shadow Warrior kind of lacks an open feel, even in its arenas, and levels overall are downright linear. It also gives you a cool katana and supporting powers, then at various occasions decides to make this completely useless by giving you melee impervious enemies, flying enemies, etc (yeah, maybe you can use shurikens on the first boss, I'm not that masochistic).

I remember Rise of the Triad 2013, it was awesome to me, it was one of the truest iterations to the original 90's shooter. I loved it.
I started playing Rott 13 with no knowledge at all and was like "hey this is fun". It came out at a time where 90's style shooter remakes were not that popular at all, if i remember correctly.

Doom even if not mechanically similar to the original captures the feel to a degree I wouldn't have expected so I'd call it more successful as old school shooter.

Mind you shadow warrior was pretty fantastic and had a surprisingly in depth and well done plot for a game that no one was expecting it from. And the move from melee being an acceptable backup to being the preferred method for most enemies was pretty fantastic.

Making a buddy cop style game starring modern Lo Wang and Doom Guy would probably work surprisingly well.

I've only played Shadow Warrior, but while I liked it I'm already sure Doom is going to beat it on almost every front. Level design, enemy design, weapons, etc.

I was pleased to find that when I saw the topic title this is exactly what I thought, and then I saw it being the first freakin' comment. You never disappoint AccursedTheory, well played.

Is it just me, or anyone else thinks Doom is the best looking game until this date? (May have weakness with human skin rendering as seen also in Wolfenstein: TNO, but Old blood looked much better in this regard)
I mean the shaders, particles and lighting looks so nice and vivid.
