Why wouldn't there be a point?

It's a fun social activity that can go bad easily - or awesome, too.

I can't wait till summer, starting a big 3.5 campaign with friends.

DnD is really fun. My friend has the third edition set at his. We play it now and again, but I really need to try get him and a couple others to do it more regularly.

Also, if tabletop games aren't your thing Neverwinter Nights is pretty fun and is essentially a PC incarnation of the tabletop game. DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) is a great free DnD MMO.

Question, actually. Is there any way to play the pen-and-paper version of the game online? Some sort of online meeting site or something?
I used to belong to a few online groups that played via IRC.
Did it look brand new?

Of course there is still a point, especially if you have a good dm that way the amount of things you can do is so much bigger than any video game rpg. Most fantasy rpgs try so hard to BE d&d ffs and some dont do too bad but they try for a reason.

Here is the thing with D&D. It's a fantastic and it's the grandfather of all RPG's as we know it (technically it's Chainmail, but that's a m00t point). It encourages imagination, brings like-minded people together, and has the opportunity to be one of the best experiences of your life.

A lot of people have opinions when it comes to which edition to play. I personally say 3.5. If you have a group of people who can teach it to you, then you're fine. However it can be very difficult to pick up on your own. 4E is a bit like the Fisher Price version of D&D, but from what I've heard still very true to the game.

Also, there are tons of pen-and-paper games that you could play. There is D20 Modern or Shadowrun if you want something set more into the future. There is Hunter, if you know those games and want to explore more of that world. Or, if you're a Whedonite, you could try the Buffy or Firefly games.

D&D is a good place to start because it embraces the core concept of the RPG and puts it into terms which most gamers can understand, and because of the revolution of the video games, accept. But try whatever you want.

PS. 3.5 all the way.

It seems that most people in this thread feel that version 3.5 is better than 4, what changed in version 4?
