I'd say anyone that didn't find it fun was doing something wrong :p

I spent an entire year hating and ranting about it, then suddenly i followed a few tips and i was having tons of fun!

How I'd recommend starting it;

1. Get your explosives skill to 30, either by leveling up or during the tutorial.
2. Talk to Lucas Simms in Megaton about disarming the Nuke.
3. Get a free house for disarming the bomb!
4. Hoarde or sell what you don't need at your house.
5. Explore the wastelands aimlessly! Make it a mission to get as many locations marked on your map.

Along the way you'll level up, find awesome weapons and eventually move onto quests. The main quest isn't entirely recommended but it's not so bad, you get Power Armour like half way through.

Another tip if you're struggling for health early on, put a lot of points into your medicine skill! It makes Stimpaks more effective which is very useful early on.

My first five minutes after exiting the vault:

After seeing the 10mm pistol blow through the Vault guards, i decided to conserve on the ammo and use the baseball bat. I was low on stimpacks, had no idea when i was gonna get more healing, and i didn't wanna eat too much food because i didn't know that rads were mostly harmless. So there i was, running around with my baseball bat into Springvale because i'd completely missed the quest marker, constantly turning around to avoid getting ambushed in the back, when a dog manages to jump me from behind.

My pants = soiled.

Then for some reason silver came walking right after i had killed the dog - i panicked and shot her. And then she shot back. And then i loaded my save because i was literally that scared.

Best moment in gaming ever.

Sometimes these sort of games aren't for everyone if you're having a lot of trouble finding what you're supposed to do I have two thoughts 1 try again but be more careful looking 2 if you really can't find what you're supposed to do consider finding another game Fallout isn't everyone's cup of tea

I have no money, no ammo, no indication of where to go, bored with repetitive environments...
If this isn't your idea of a good time, then you won't like this game. The rest of it is just because you're a psycho who might want to see a shrink, do that and you probably won't feel the need to shoot friendly NPCs in the head and thus won't be ostracized. But Fallout is about traveling a hostile wasteland trying to scavenge enough scrap to afford bullets to stay alive another day. It's about exploring an unknown world hoping to find something useful or interesting. Following the storyline won't make you happy, I can tell you that.

It's also possible that you don't like these things because you don't want to like the game.
That's a feature that NV implemented so well with "Hardcore Mode".
OT: I would just persevere with the game, I didn't enjoy the first few hours but it really picks up. it's around this quest http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Superhuman_Gambit I thought, "wow this game is amazing!"

Honestly when i first played it when i was kinda scared of the wasteland and downtown D.C was described in such a way that i didn't go down there till level 17. I spent most of my time in megaton then took my first tentative step back out towards Arefu. I was scared to death of running out of ammo but when i found the combat shotgun realized its damage dealing and ammo saving potential i felt much safer. After i killed my first super mutant around an truck's storage container i felt confident enough to go to D.C after send it's head flying about a mile away. By this time I'd completed many sub missions and was very well equipped. I was well after popping caps in several hundred feral ghouls on my way to GNR i just enjoyed the rest of the game, spent hours searching pre-war ruins, and went about finding all the smallest random encounters and unmarked missions. Even after accidentally deleting my first account after i took a hiatus from the game and tried to clean up my useless saves, my new character felt nearly fresh though i couldn't help but think about the deleted progress. While playing and truly believing i had done all that could be done and after playing through fallout new vegas while exploring i found a suit of T-51b powered armor. I couldnt help but put my controller laugh. One of the best suits of armor in the entire game and i missed it in my "did everything" first play through. None of my friends are patient enough for the game so maybe its not for everybody but its one of my favorite games ever. I also had about 8,000 5:56 ammo by the time i beat the game without too much off track exploring because i was still scared of using all my ammo. I also wanna add i wasn't even 13 when i first played.

hell, maybe you just don't like it. Just because alot of people enjoy it does not mean you have to
