as they are actually not very accurate or powerful.

I'd love to know where you heard that crap. Learned it playing Call of Duty or someshit?
I meant it by the standards of other shotguns. None bird-hunting double barrel shotguns veer to the left or right depending on which barrel you fire, as per design, and they aren't very powerful because they can't accelerate the shell very much, because it is a very simple weapon. Now, if you thought I meant the Mossberg 500, those are actually pretty good military and civilian single-barrel pump action shotguns, which makes them very accurate and, thanks to some technological advancements, can hit far harder than old double barrel models. And I learned that from some special on Military channel a few months back during a bout of insomnia.
Except that the only thing that the gun itself does as far as "accelerating the shell" is just to ignite the gunpowder and then off the shot goes down the barrel. Shotguns are smoothbore weapons so it's not like there's gonna be a whole lot more going on besides that. Sure, you'll have the choke at the end that will alter the pattern, but there isn't any voodoo that goes on with accelerating the shot. Longer barrel = more velocity = tighter spread = long doubleguns have the advantage.
The issues with the barrels being slightly offset isn't that big of a deal and easily solved with a bit of practice. It's not like it's going to send the shot flying wildly left or right (or up and down depending on what sorta side by side you've got). It'll just be offset by an inch or so.
The big difference is the fact that a modern pump action/semi-auto gun is going to have a lot more going on with recoil reduction and sustained, repeated fire. If modern pumps/semis were really that good, competition trap shooters would have switched to them by now.

Simple doesn't mean a lack of power. Power, when it comes to any gun, is dependent on two things: Barrel length and the load of the cartridge. If you've got a 3" barrel and a 20" barrel, both firing the exact same shell, the 20" is going to be much more powerful than the 3".

Accuracy with shotguns greatly improved with the invention of the choke, which tightens the spread of the shot.

True, but a tight spread doesn't help you much if what you're aiming at wont be hit because it's in front of the right barrel and you're shooting out of the left, but I don't really feel like getting into an argument, so, for the sake of not saying something that will get me on probation or suspension, I'm just going to say that double barrel shotguns are still good and accurate, just not as accurate as newer shotguns.

Mossberg 500 "J.I.C" Don't have one yet but I like that it's small enough to fit behind the seat of my car. If I remember right the initials mean Just In Case. Also it's a hearse so there's just a flat panel thing behind the seat a bit like a truck. More realistically I'd keep it at home and use it in the odd chance of a burglar.

I'd imagine you'd do alright with 12 gauge slugs. I mean they are used for hunting bears.

I know the Spas is going to win this, since it's practically a household name to anyone who plays any fps's.

The Winchester 1897 has my vote!

Mine has never let me down, and it's over 100 years old!

(this isn't mine btw... Mine's a LOT older)

AA12. It kicked vast amounts of butt in Max Payne 2.
That was the street-sweeper, sir. Though I respect you for being the first person I've found here besides me thats played that game.

OT: the FRANCHI Spas-12. It is easily converted to semi-auto.

An AA/12 shotgun, not to be confused with the AA-12 shotgun.

I mean a 'AA' gauge Punt Gun loaded with no.12 Rat-Shot.

.

It's like this one, but with a bigger barrel (101mm) which can fire over 6Kg of lead shot at a time, and for a laugh I'd saw off the barrel and use no. 12 rat-shot in it.

Yeah, that's the kind of AA/12 shotgun I'd want, a shoulder fired lead cloud launcher.

If you can't remember which barrel you're firing from, you probably shouldn't be using a double barrel.

...or any firearm for that matter.

I was about to launch into a similar response, but it seems you have done all the hard work yourself. Good job.

As you say, having barrels that are offset or above one another is barely, if at all, noticeable. The spread of the shot will cancel out the small distance between the end of the barrels anyway. Not sure about slugs though as I've never fired them but I get the impression they are mainly used in single barrel guns, so it makes no difference.

As far as accuracy goes, chokes can have a pretty severe effect. The difference between shooting clays with 1/2 choke and then 3/4 or full choke is pretty noticeable in my view. Or maybe it's just me being a poor shot and relying on wide chokes to hit stuff :p

Stoeger 12 ga. coach gun
Nice, but as a traditionalist, it pains me to see black furniture and chrome barrels on a double barrel shotgun :p

Ahh who am I kidding, it looks great :p

OT my favourite shotgun in games and films and so on would probably be the Benelli M4, better known as the M1014.

However, my fave shotgun that I've actually used is my own Bettinsoli Over and Under 12 Bore.

I also loved the Old Winchester 101 that I had.

Wrong. It's the Striker your thinking of for Max Payne 2.

For me R-870 cause its the only one I can honestly say I'm really familiar with. And I mean really familiar with ;P

My bad. I got confused 'cause they kinda look-alike.
