Bored. So lets do it. Just so you know Imperium of Man refers to all 5 factions within it, Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Inquisition, Sisters of Battle, and the Machine Cult. Same with Chaos if people prefers using only the Chaos Space Marines or Daemons independently.

[HEADING=3]ORKS! ORKS ORKS ORKS!![/HEADING]

Because they're cockney space pirates with the technological understanding of a 10-year old Fallout Raider! Everything can and will be Orked, and because they believe it'll work, it'll work. That looted Eldar Bright Lance not working? Hit it twice with a hammer and hook up a chicken to it. That'll work. And lo and behold, it now fires laser eggs.
That Necron green shiny crystal not shooting big lightning anymore? Just tie a chain to it and use it as a mace for a Gargant.

Also they're the only race that's actually having a good time in 40k. Everyone else is always all 'Alas and Alack! We must pull backpack! Someone find me another Razorback! I must drink Fenrisian Victory Cognac!' or 'BLOOD! BLOOOOOODDDD!' or 'Woe betide us, we fucked too much and now we are doomed to have fucked too much because fucking too much doomed us to have fucked too much and woe betide us' or 'Hiiissss'

The Orks are the only ones who look around at a Galaxy filled with monsters, humans, human monsters, Space Elves, Xenomorphs and Egyptian Robot Zombies and says 'Hot Damn! Lets get to Stompin'!' and it simply makes for a funner, richer Lore.
Orks are so ubiquitous, so eternal and universal they've become the glue that holds the 40k lore together.

Everything can and should include Orks, and everything is better for it.

On a serious note, probably the Imperium. The Adeptus Mechanicus/Skitarii to be more specific.

The Necron.
we brought order to the universe once and we will do so again.
i preferred them back when they were a real threat but i still have a soft spot for them.

It use to be the tau, but after they released the Skitarii that became my favorite army. I love the raygun style and the mix of old and new in their designs.

I don't think Squats are heretical in any way, they weren't even lost to chaos.
Not in-universe, no, but GW was (and possibly still is) very insistent that the Squats never existed. There was even a rumour/urban legend that mentioning them on any GW forum would result in an immediate ban. It's become something of a joke that mentioning them is heresy.

I'd say the Tau, after playing them a lot in Dark Crusade. I love the Fire Warriors + Carnivore combo, along with all the battlesuits. The high-tech military theme just appeals to me. Whereas the Astartes is an army of skilled warrior monks and the Imperial Guard is a mixed collection of conscripts and specialists, the Tau forces are organized professionals with "exotic" auxiliaries. Plus, they're unique in that they're not quite as genocidal and merciless as the other factions.

Um...none? I mean, aren't they all terrible?

Let's see...the Imperium of Man is a xenophobic totalatarian state that exterminates its own people when it isn't killing them for heresy, and is technologically backwards, having made no advancements in technology in the past 10,000 years. Ergo, they're one of the least morally repugant factions out there.

Chaos is...well, Chaos, bent on the consumption of the galaxy. The tyranids also want to consume all life in the galaxy, both proving that the universe/Warp just wants you dead.

Eldar are gits - they're no better than the Imperium, they just lack the means to be as destructive. And the Dark Eldar are a race of sadists.

The Tau Empire have the whole 'holier than thou' thing going on, and are like the Imperium as well, only less blatant in their expansionistic tendencies. Oh, and the necrons also want to rule the galaxy...or something...I prefer old necron lore. :(

And the orks just go stompin' around. They have a good time, but at the expense of everyone else.

Y'know, for a setting that takes a lot of inspiration from Dune, Foundation, and even Judge Dredd (e.g. the Arbites), it makes me realize how nice those settings are in comparison. Yes, Dune has a galaxy-spanning Imperium with bickering houses, and the Foundation has a technologically regressive dark age where mankind worships machines, and Dredd features a burnt out Earth where life means nothing, but frankly, I'd take them.

But if I had to nominate a faction as a favorite, I guess the Imperium, in as much that they have the largest variety of forces (Space Marines, Imperial Guard, etc.). Also, I'm a human, not an alien, so there's that.

The question wasn't "who are the good guys".

My vote is for the Tyranids. Mainly because they're the most alien faction, also because they look cool. Also I like the idea that they're a scary unknowable enemy that has no motivation other than to eat everything. There's no ego or politics involved, they just want to eat everything. Also they'll win in the end.

I have a 10,000 pts Tyranid army that never sees the table because 40k is terrible now and the Tyranid codex is bland dogshit. Though the new Genestealer Cult stuff being released is literally the best thing GW has put out in nearly 10 years and is strongly tempting me.

Yes, but fantasy orks don't hold a candle to 40k Orks. I feel like they've lost the 'fun' part of the Orks in Fantasy, especially with Age of Sigmar. They're no longer football hooligans on a drunk rampage in a foreign city. Now they're just hairless gorillas that like killing things, but don't seem to have fun doing it. Like a spider i guess. Murderous and all, no joy.

Tau when they came out used to be the good guys, but they've since been retconned to all be under the hormonal control of Futurama brain slugs. Apparently Ethereals have slugs that have basically eaten their brains and release a hormone to control the Tau, and all the other races, including humans, that have sided with them.

I would say Salamanders, but they really enjoy setting people on fire. I guess the Orks are the least morally dubious. They're honest, straight forward, fair and believe in a simple all encompassing philosophy: Green is best.

Only my second post and already I find a topic I like. I?ve read a few Horus heresey books and love the lore of 40k so much. People take the piss out of it for the Grimdark thing but it?s a wonderful and deep universe they have created.

I think I?ll go Eldar. I love the Eldar because they?re beautiful, flawed, hedonistic space elves. What a great twist on the Tolkien idea of elves to have them as decadent and perverted while retaining their noble characteristics.

I guess in my idea of 40k fan-fic i?d like to see humans and Eladar put aside their differences and unite to solve the flaws in their collective souls that give rise to chaos. Also the drawings of Eldar ladies are hot - who could resist an Eldar girl?

They weren't actually re-cannoned to that, but so many of the fans think that it might as well be cannon. Recently they have actually been Re-cannon nicer, but only in farsight armies. (Basically they suffered from the same thing that happened to the IoM.)

Actually its pretty canon, because it comes from Xenology

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Xenology

Its 10 years old, but the books says the Mechanicus believe pheromones controls the tau, and that each Ethereal dissected had dead worms in their brains.

Now, that makes the info 2+ codex out of date, but its not specifically being countered yet.

But who the fuck knows?! Its 40k. Literally everything is considered propaganda by the Inquisition.

and aren't the Farsights dead?

Squats, to be honest. I always felt like they got a hard deal. They were semi-revived in Battlefleet Gothic as the Demiurg [http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Demiurg], who are nomadic space-bound traders and miners with a Homeworld vibe that I really liked.

Basically, I'd like to see a Demiurg-style reboot of the Squat race that shed all of the 80s silliness that got them discontinued in the first place and focused on their role as...Space Jews, essentially. Not even through an army list; maybe just as an ancillary unit for the Tau, who they're supposed to trade with, or through new fluff.

I mean, they got dropped for being too "fantasy," but 40k went and kept the Eldar and Orks with minor changes; I don't see why they couldn't do the same for the dwarf archetype. Especially considering they have space vampires and space werewolves fighting space mummies.

Well, yeah. What we wanna know is your favourite flavour of terror.
