A friend of mine is a big 40K buff, she's used it often and it's kind of rubbed off onto me (hey, anything that lets you swear without technically swearing while referencing something you like is a win win in my book...like smeg!).

...while not really classed as a swear word "smeg" isn't exactly polite. It isn't made up, it's a shortening of smegma. Look it up.

OT, no I don't use it and I am pretty sure it's just a way of saying fuck without actually doing so.

I'm referring to the use of the word in Red Dwarf (a favourite of mine), it was a popular swear word on the show. Here's an example:

I know. From your wording and the "word" already being discussed it seemed as though you thought it was a made up swear word as opposed to an existing one that while not commonly used as such is actually pretty rude if you aren't familiar with it's use on Red Dwarf.

Well it is from a fictional tv program so it's as made up (as in the context of not deemed a true curse here but instead in a fictional universe) as feth. According to Rob Grant and Doug Naylor it isn't tied into the word smegma (nor the brand name of my oven).

It's a read word, I think, butttt the 40k books don't want to be TOO adult, saying fuck and the such, or they can't get kids to buy it.

It sure as hell was when I was at school in 1989. Admittedly that's a year after red dwarf came out, but really whatever the origins, subsequent usage has turned it into something different, like I said it's an unusual one but it's quite possible that if someone calls you a smeg head they aren't necessarily making a Red Dwarf joke.

That is quite amusing if true though, a made up swear word that's almost become a real swear word due to a similarity to another word the writers didn't think of (although I do find it hard to believe such talented writers weren't aware of the similarities).
