I've done a search and I'm surprised that there hasn't been a discussion about this before... or at least one that I could find.

I've recently bought a DS and was looking to buy Final Fantasy III for it, however I already have an emulated version of FFIIIj on the NES (translated version). I was wondering whether it is worth buying the DS version or sticking with the NES version. The essence of the question is... which of the two are the better options?

Side Note: I played the SNES version of FFII/IV on the PS1 re-release and quite enjoyed it, is it worth buying the DS version of that too? Have they enhanced it to a degree that is worthy of another purchase?

I say save your money and just play the nes version. They added a couple new features, but not enough to make it worth the $15...actually that's not too much. If you've got extra money and/or really have a thing for the chibi graphics then pick it up.

Not on FFIV, since I haven't tried it. As for III, it depends. It's the only pre-3D title that's been released on two consoles (NES and DS), so the version to go for are entirely up to you. The core gameplay is the same, but the presentation is drastically different. Either 2D graphics with a limited pallete or full colour 3D prettiness? Entirely up to you.

Personally, I'd say DS, but only because it's prettier and portable. Playing through either one will get you geek credit though.

The DS version is considerably refined over the NES one. The class balance is better, class abilities are more useful, the job levels affect more than just cost of job transformation, the signposting is better so you'll spend less time aimlessly wandering, and it's generally a better experience all round.

Well, since money is not a matter for me (Toys "R4" us) I'd go with the DS version, since it's updated, and you can carry it around everywhere.

on ffIV, I've only played the gameboy advanced version, but I doubt it would be greatly improved by bad 3D graphics.

Thanks a lot GloatingSwine, I see exactly what you mean... I've tried to get into the NES version a couple of times but don't really know what to do. I'll probably choose the DS version, 3D graphics may be a bit weird but I really play the games for the stories so if it has better direction and flow then that'll be better. I just wanted to make sure that they hadn't made a pig's ear of it.

I thought the advanced port of FF3 for the DS was quite good actually. It's better than the original in one respect at least; I CAN READ IT.

Don't have to hope the fan translator is sober and serious.

Granted, they've changed how it looks slightly, but from what I remember of the fan-translated-ROM, the plot is pretty similar and the only other thing that stands out to me is that I don't think the characters had names, thought the player chose them.

Might be wrong, has been a few years since I played ROM version.
