As stated, this is an inquiry for those adventurers in Skyrim that prefer the use of visceral melee/weapon-based combat.

Which MELEE (which means close, individual combat) weapon type is your favorite, and why?

See, I started off with bows and magic, but now that I'm sufficiently experienced with those, I'm going to start improving my melee weapon skills and wanted some advice on which to chose. I'm thinking of dual axes for maximum viking powah, but I'm also partial to maces.

I'm also intrigued as to the ratio of said weapon types to players, so I'll try and include a poll. (Apologies if it gets eaten, of course.)

swords are faster than axe, axe is faster than blunt. I prefer to kill em quick, and my spell-thief usually drops most mooks in 1-4 dual-weld attacks with a dagger/sword combo.

Generally I use a sword, but when things get hairy, I'll pull out my battle axe (Wuuthrad FTW).

I like myself some axe because of the balance between power and speed. I use mostly sword though, 'cause I conjure my weapon and I have yet to find bound 1h axe.

Swords all the way, faster than all other weapons and with decent damage.
That said, my character carries three swords, one shield, one bow and one staff at all times.

I started out using Sword/magic.

But now that I finally got my hands on 2 katanas, I run around dual-wielding them. Is it the most effective strategy? No. Do I feel like a badass though? Hell. Yes.

I stuck with a the mace/shield combo.
Of course, me being new to the TES franchise, I didn't know axes and swords made up for reduced damage with speed, so I just picked what looked best in the stats department; now that I do know, maybe I'll give the other variants a try, but I've kind of gotten attached to my mace... bashing someone's head in is just the kind of stupid, simple fun I prefer sometimes. ^^

You know I really should go back and get Wuthrad, I didn't know you could retrieve it after the mission. I don't use two handed so it's not a problem.

I use a sword and shield combo, dawnbreaker and spellbreaker. Works for me.

You left out Warhammers and Daggers.

That said, I favor the sword. My first guy ended a pair of longswords - one Daedric, one Ebony, both enchanted for fire, and my new guy alternates between the Nightingale Blade and an Ebony Longsword. Hunting for the Ebony Blade right now.

Actually, I just left out Daggers. Thanks for bringing them up though. :)

My melee experience has been somewhat limited given how I'm abusing the OPness of the Sneak/Bow combo like a mad hatter, but it's my understanding that the 3-perk 75% armor reduction for Maces makes larger targets trivial.

So yeah. Given that I can't vote Bows, I'm going with Maces.

What about armour? Doesn't that get combersome? Steed stone?

OT: Axes, because of the more consistant "Bleed Damage" perk. As opposed to the sword's "Critical Chance" perk.

They may be the slowest weapon in the game, but decapitations with warhammers just feels so cathartic.

Volundrung all the way!

(Also beating someones face in with daedric gauntlets has got to hurt too)

I generally use longswords and greatswords. But I occasionally use my fists if I have the perk that adds your gauntlet defense to your unarmed damage. Hell with that perk, my fists do more than a daedric longsword. Plus responding to a dragon's breath attack by shoving your fist down its throat just feels awesome.

I like to dual wield Daedric Swords. That said, my next character is likely to be a Khajiit fucker who takes full advantage of that Heavy Armor perk to buff my melee damage and just punch things to death a lot.

Daggers!

15x damage multiplier for victory!

(I think there's a way to put it up to 45x too, but I haven't found it)
