Ok, I know a lot of people hate on gaming tattoos but when it comes down to a tattoo - it should always remain an individuals choice.

I'm planning on getting a stylised Boo [http://i30.tinypic.com/2cpuur5.jpg] (from Mario) to accompany my current Tokidoki tatt on my chest.
I was talking to one of my friends, who is a Tattoo fiend, about my Boo plans and she tried to warn me against it. I was really surprised because she said 'be wary of game tattoos'.
I mean, Boo's a character I've known and loved for 20 years and I really don't see any reason why I shouldn't get it? Regardless, those words left me wondering what other people think...

I'm interested as to who hates on Game tatts and who digs them?
Personally I think, that with a little stylising and a bit of creativity, they can be amazing! Though I have seen a lot of really badly designed//inked designs as well, I believe that taking a piece of art from a game that you love and then making it a part of you is a very valid and worthwhile approach to body art.

I've attached just a couple of examples of what I mean by a gaming tattoo that's done well.

<img src="http://i26.tinypic.com/2djufpw.jpg" width=300>
Okami Calf Muscle tatt.

<img src="http://i25.tinypic.com/2ibm1s8.jpg" width=300>
Triforce Upper Back tatt.

Also - Thought I'd add this as an example of how not to go about a game tattoo.

<img src="http://i32.tinypic.com/2ns410p.jpg" width=200>
Zelda back? tatt.
Notice the lack of any defining style, even the ink work itself is amateur in some parts.
Bad concept. Bad design. Bad shading. Bland result.
This is something I can foresee the owner regretting in a decade or so (if not, sooner).

I'm going to get the Great Chain from BioShock on my wrist/lower arm whenever I can.
(Trying to make it as original as possible. My current idea is having a hand outstretched in the backround with the chain themselves.)

I personally don't see the attraction in having ink injected into yourself in such a way that it stays there, but that's just me. Gaming tattoos are no worse than any other, I suppose, although I don't really care since I'm not going to get any.

That Triforce one just filled up my quota for awesome for this week.

I really don't care about tattoos in general though. Never saw the appeal of them I guess.

The Okami one looks great, it doesn't look tacky and could stand well on it's own without any prior knowledge as to what it is.
To be honest, I wouldn't mind having one of those inked onto myself.

However, things like your last two examples I wouldn't go near. There's just something about game tattoo's that strikes me down as bad, they're kind of like tattooing someone else's name on you.
At somepoint, you're going to want to scrub it off.
I'd advise against your boo tattoo as well.

Thought that the Okami one was pretty cool. But I would never get one unless it was really small.

I was thinking of doing that at some point, but decided against it... I mean, a lot of people are going to be off put by the clearly visible chains on your wrists. Plus, you emphasized another of my issues with it: Some one else has it, therefore it would not have been unique to me.

All very good points.

Most people will see it as just a joke or something "childlike", instead of seeing it as the artistic expression you intended.

Could you link a pic please? Is that the one about the Man//Slave analogy?
Should just go do it mate, I put mine off for years and for no good reason. Only cost me $140 and took 50 minutes. Doesn't even hurt that much :) just print it out and take it to a tatt parlour, they'll take care of the rest!

Yeah I thought the Triforce was quite striking in its simplicity :)

Yep that Okami tatt is freakin awesome, I'd like to know who inked that because it's incredibly shaded//coloured.

Hmmm yeah, it's not something I'm really going to take advice on but I appreciate your input.
I've wanted this tatt for quite some time now and I'm getting one of my artsy friends to help me design it cos she's good with stuff like that. Basically gunna make it a little bit more evil and sorta personalise it to suit me.
Think of it as Paying homage through subtle plagiarism ;)

Yay! Okami! But as great as the Okami tattoo was, I still think it isn't a good idea to make those game based. It's just a game people. I understand it's becoming an increasingly popular medium, but it's not a good reason to paint yourself in it.

Yeah, it looks more like a Zodiac sign than some specific trademarked character.

If I were to get a game tattoo (not going to happen) I would pick something very niche-market and/or old (Like from my SNES days) or I'd take inspiration from a game. Like copy a game character's tattoo.

You should get "a man chooses" on your left wrist, and "a slave obeys" on your right...

If going with the chains try to be a bit original, I've seen 2 or 3 other people with just the chains and while keeping to the character's tattoo its a bit bland, when I did mine I had them made to look like they twisted and had the words intertwine with the chains.

I see what you mean but it's not really supposed to be awesome to anyone else but me, if others find it looks awesome then great, but fundamentally I'm getting the tattoo for me. Plus the way I'm stylising it will make it a little less 'childlike' and a little more unique.
