Games that lower developer costs and increases quality of game-play

Take the game 'Sins of a solar Empire' developed by Ironclad Games and published by Stardock Entertainment for example. Want to guess the budget on this hot selling game? A game that received so many awards in the post the developers must have started using the letters as extra bog roll. A Game that won Game of the Year from IGN in 2008....A game that since it's release has had 2 further DLC expansions released? Well might as well tell you - they landed this big fish of a game in the market with a cool budget of less than $1,000,00. That is very very little if you think about it. If you want to put it in terms of £ then it cost them £686,671.702. Their profits were double-triple that. To scare you a bit you could have funded this entire game's development and marketed it had to gotten 1000 people with $1000/£667 to their name!

When I think about this I realise alot of the big developers throw their money at endorsing their games...However I cannot help but feel that developers are now missing the point. Realistically most people now a days hear about games/ratings of games from what you could call the more than casual base of gamers. Tension is built up with supposed 'leaking' of images and preview game material. To be honest the only game I have ever seen advertised in such a way you could call success - i.e. I was informed about it/made me want to find out more was a Halo 3 Poster on the side of a bus. Otherwise I just come up short in what the developers are spending this money on.

So this post has 2 reasons behind it.
First - Where do you think the millions are being spent?
Second - The poll and asking you to discuss if you think big developers need to re-think where they use money.

Can't say I've ever given the how much companies spend on games much thought.
As far as I'm concerned the best games out there are Bioware's, so I guess I think some developers use more money well, as I doubt the Mass Effect games were cheap to make.

Where does the money go? Well, a lot of it definitely goes into advertising (like for example the live-action Halo 3 ones).

And the million-budget mainstream games I believe have more expensive voice talents at work than low-budget ones, for example. Not neccessarily something that may make a game better, but it adds a lot to the cost either way.
