When browsing these forums I tend to focus on recently posted threads with few replies. I avoid threads that have begun seeping into the second page, and if they have three or more pages I skip 'em altogether. I like to be grounded in the discussion from the start-- posting after several pages, unless you have the patience to slog through stacks of other peoples' replies, risks you saying something that's already been said or introducing an issue that has already been addressed. This disrupts discussions and, in my opinion, early posters tend to ignore late posters anyway.
I'm the same way with guilds-- I want to sign the charter and help design the tabard. I enjoy playing newly released MMOs (though this tends to be an expensive and short-lived decision) because of the sensation of experiencing new content alongside others who are rising alongside you-- it remedies that disturbing sense of unbalance I feel when playing alongside people who've been in the game for years. When it comes to gadgets and newly released consoles, I've already pre-ordered-- I'm what people call an early adopter, and while I may have paid like $500 for my original PSP on the day it was released, for me, nothing beats the excitement of early ownership-- we're the modern pioneers, you know.
Getting in on the ground floor is important to me-- what about you, Escapist?
