And what's the NHC statistical justification for the fact a man that had sex once with another man, when they were both virgins, 30 years ago, can't give blood, but a woman who goes to random sex parties can, just so long as the most recent time was longer than 12 months ago?

Probably that anal intercourse to a gender with weak groinal skin, within a high risk sexual grouping, that can suffer from haemophilia, is a higher risk than a mixed intercourse, bisexual that's less likely to tell, or even remember, the truth.
Any such woman that hasn't contracted an STD, also discriminatory grounds, has to be the luckiest woman ever.

If a man goes out and has anal sex with lots of bisexual men, he's banned from giving blood for life.
If a woman goes out and has anal sex with lots of bisexual men, she's banned from giving blood for 12 months.

The only difference between those two situations is that one's a man and one's a woman.

They currently don't allow gay people in the United Kingdon to donate blood as we're technically part of an HIV risk group.

They get around our very good anti-discriminatory laws, by stating that it's not gay men who are excluded, but "men who have sex with men".

As far as I was aware, that's what gay men are....that said, if anybody can tell me where all these straight men fucking other men are, I'd be interested.

I think this particular piece of legislation is actually designed to protect people who receive blood transfusions, although it get how it seems discriminatory.

It doesn't simply save me money, it earns me money. And even tho I use condoms, I'm always on the safe side when it comes to std's ^^

Well, different country, different rules. In Poland you have to be 18 to give blood. For a second I paniced, because you can't have asthma and give blood. But thank God I only have allergy and can't give blood in April and May.

I really should give blood to be honest. I have O-Negative blood which like 1/10 people have or something. Sucks for me though because I can give it to anyone but only take it from other O-Negatives.

I donate plasma every two weeks. They're able to do more with plasma than with whole blood as it's easier to fractionate into its seperate components, and you don't lose anywhere near as much iron from donating plasma. I quite enjoy it.

Anyway I got a time of 4 min 17 seconds.

How many ml were you donating? Here in Aus it's usually 475ml of blood and 750ml of plasma. Four minutes is very impressive.

My dad recently received some kind of certificate for having donated 100 litres of blood in his life-time. That's a lot of blood. He has a rare blood type, so it's helping a lot of people. It's inspired me to do the same, and I'll organise it soon enough, even though I have one of the more-common blood types (he's my step-father, just to clarify), because it seems like an easy enough thing to give, and something that can really help.

you get cool cards too, and you get different colours for the number of times, eg. 1-4 times is a red card, 5-10 is a yellow one etc.

I don't know how the system is in the USA most likely different as you get paid for it, you lucky bastards.

No we don't--it's illegal in the U.S. to pay people to donate *blood*. You CAN pay them to donate PLASMA because plasma can be, well, basically pasteurized to remove contaminants. But if a blood bank tried to pay people, it'd be illegal for them to make deferrals and refuse to pay some people on the basis of the fact that their blood can't be transfused into anyone. Hence the additional restriction on pay-for-blood.

I used to work in a blood and tissue bank, and I even used to donate until I got a permanent deferral because of the CJD scare. (That's Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or "Mad Cow" in case you didn't know.)

My best donation story is probably about the time I donated for a potassium study. Some premature babies get regular transfusions as they are hooked up to a machine that pumps their blood for them--this gives their heart a chance to rest and grow stronger slowly instead of needing to take up the full load before it's ready. (In the womb, the mother's heart does the heavy lifting, I believe.) Anyway, they found that donated blood that sits on a shelf for a period of time develops increasingly high potassium levels that could cause an infant's heart to race and be potentially fatal. So they were trying to study ways of measuring/decreasing/preventing that potassium increase. I was told that the results from the study were extremely promising, and I helped.
