I think the main time saver they are going for is you don't have to fully type out what you want to search for, all you have to do is start typing something and Google takes care of the rest.

I thought you already didn't have to fully type what you were searching for, because it already has that little drop-down list of suggestions doesn't it?

Yeah but it takes time to look for what most resembles what your searching for, selecting it, then reload the page and hope it has what you're looking for. If it doesn't then you have to restart that process.

Now you can make many different searches by just typing and re-typing different keywords.
