In game, I rarely play male characters, in DDO, all my characters are female, same with most other games games I played, Diablo 2 was an exception, we couldn't choose the gender.

I'm a Girl and I prefer my Characters to be girls, but if the story calls for a male, like in Legend of Zelda, I'll play as Male. In WoW I have a two Male toons, but 7 female. My hubby plays mostly male characters, unless he is playing one that is supposed to be me.

RPG = Role-playing game. Role-playing: playing a role, generally not your own. You're not really a mage, you're not reallly a gnome. If playing what you are in real life is the rule, everyone would be a human (insert dayjob here), and ecaping our daily life to role-play my daily life doesn't make a lot of sense (to me anyway). It does't apply to race, class, appearance, or profession, why should it apply to gender?

Sometimes games play slightly different for different genders.

If it is a third-person game, men tend to prefer to look at women rather than men. I agree, but when applied to a video-game, meh.

As I've learned from Yahtzee, whenever I get the choice of designing and naming a character, I usually abuse the right, and this would I do online, but I stopped playing mumorpugers a long time ago. Before, I was a WoW player, but now I've realized that I could use that time to do better things, like play games, earn some money, or learn how to program computer software so I can live out my dream of being a game developer.

Makes me wish that I had qualified this better.

The reason that CriticallyAcclaimed alluded to is a strong example ("good" didn't seem like the best fit for that statement), though it is not necessarily an example that I meant to reference.

I notice that there are a lot of guys playing female characters in every game I've played. Maybe it's the "Hot Elf Chick" thing, I don't know. I usually play female characters, because I RP, and it's easier to RP from my own perspective, but I have male characters too. Funny thing is, I've found that a lot of people seem to just assume that even though the character is female, it's a guy running it, because so many guys have female characters. They're surprised to discover I'm really a female, disguised as....a female. :D
That's why I made female characters. Well the hunter was based on an anime character, but I still wanted to spend hours with a hot looking blood elf on my screen instead of a dude.

Meh. Rarely there is any diffrence in the way you play the diffrent sex. I don't play MMORPGs so that leaves me with game like L4D. And Zoey rules!

I've noticed that if there are guys playing as girl characters, it is usually for one of three reasons.
1) They want to mooch off of the guy populace that want to supply the "girl" with stuff to make "her" life easier and to steal the one "girl" off the internet from the other female-starved men of the gaming nation.
2) They don't want to stare at a man's derriere for the entire duration of their play-time.
3) Sometimes playing a girl character is more fun (i.e games where the class the player wants is strictly female).
I play as both male and female characters online and offline.
When I'd make a female character it would usually be for reason 2). (see above quote)

When playing an MMO I'd never use or try to exploit reason 1). (see above quote)
If people asked if I was a guy, I'd say yes.

Never ran into reason 3) in an MMO, but say in an arcade style fighting game,
I have no problem picking the female characters if they are better for some reason.
(I'm not a big arcade fighting game enthusiast.)

When I was still playing WoW...
I would usually choose what race I wanted based off their specific race bonuses...on the Horde side of course.
Then I would like to see if making a decent ugly male character was possible if not I'd make a female one.
Preferred character gender for horde races...

Orc- Male
Troll -Male
Tauren -Male
Undead -Male
Blood elf - Female

My favourite character to play when I still played WoW was a Male Orc Shaman (enhancement).
Though my first character was a Female Night Elf Hunter.

As for role playing in WoW...no goram way!
Those few role players I met always made want to do violent things to them.

I almost always make mine a male. But if it's a game I'm replaying, I might make it female if it changes the items, story, et cetera. But that doesn't happen too much.

However, if it's a RPG boardgame I'm playing a with a friend (we create our own) and we get to choose several different characters, I make mine as diverse as possible. I know that's not 'online', but I thought it was worth mentioning.

RPG's are just that, though: role-playing. I'm sure most of the people playing aren't magical, body-building warrios, so I don't see it as bad thing.

I play alot of characters on world of warcraft at one time, I go about 50/50 on the gender thing.
I figured one day that a holy priest would make more sense as a female, I named it after one of my favorite female characters I created while being a dungeon master and kinda got hooked.
Though I like my male characters I like LOOKING at my female ones more....

I guess any guy looking for a girlfriend in a MMORPG is gonna have to realize that girls dont want to meet men in a video game and half the ones you meet are probably gonna be guys anyways.

Heh. I can't believe I registered on this forum just to answer this...

But then, I see questions like it a lot.

I've pretty much chosen to be a girl in 95% of games where I have a choice. It doesn't matter if it's offline, online, or even traditional pen & paper RPG's...

But then, I chose not to answer this poll, because it's not so simple for me... You see, as it turns out, it's not just games where I tend to do this, and from the answers I've seen in this thread I'm guessing it must be pretty unlikely (or few people admit to it), but I realised some years ago that I do it because that's what I want to be.
And, in case that isn't obvious to some of you, that basically means I do it because I have what is medically termed Gender Dysphoria. - That's the word they use for anyone that issues with gender identity - The most serious cases are transsexuals, but not everyone with gender Disphoria is a transsexual.

So... When people ask me (which happens, though not as much as you'd think, online. I actually got asked the question a lot more in RL when I was 10-13 years old than I have been online) I find it very difficult to answer, since there are only two choices, and neither seems to really feel like the truth to me.

But, I guess I'm really in the minority here with that right? XD

I've played a lot of MMO's in my day, and i can tell you i've always been against this. As someone said on another page I try to create myself in that game. Also i want to Represent myself so Why the hell would i want to play as a girl? And i see people put "to play around with people, to have fun" I'm sorry but that's not cool in anyway shape or form, plus the REAL Girls don't think its Cute or charming. I also seen people put "i play a girl chara to get free stuff".... What the hell is that? are you that much of a lazy ass to go out and get the things yourself? *sigh* I'm Sorry if i offend some "Men" out there because i know for most of these games now a-days its like 95% of the guys like running around playing girl elfs in mini skirts jackin off all day while they level up.... Please Guys... stop this nonsense... Please your making all of us look very bad not only for our pride as Guys and dudebros but your makin us look like real sissies to the real Ladies... Oh and P.S to all the guys out there who stick to there manliness and Represent there selfs the best way they can, Thank you very much.

... How do you have fun with playing as a girl? I don't get it girls jump rope and paint there nails thats fun to you? and and pretty much for number two you just sit there and masturbate while leveling up your girl chara?.... I just don't get these reasons..there is only one reason i understand and its when that guy said he'd rather be a girl then a guy. That is the only reason for playing as a girl character in a game that represents yourself.

Ah, if it's MMORPGS we are talking about, it's no wonder... More guys play girls than girls play anything on WoW.

I try to mix it up. On Fable II I went ahead and used the sex change potion to make my guy a moderately attractive girl (after changing that one strength stat to 0 so she wasn't fat/huge.) Whenever I play Resident Evil, I always pick the girl. For a while my friend's main on WoW was a girl (luckily we both don't play anymore.)
