Hey. As part of my recent obsession with Dark Souls lore, I've been digging into one of the matter that has drawn most attention of them all: Is Solaire the long lost Gwyn's first born son?
In case you haven't noticed while playing the game, it's said that Gwyn had 3 sons: The God of war, of which we don't know the name, Gwynevere, and Gwyndolin. Apparently, this first born son "lost" something of great importance, be it an item or an event, and was demoted and kicked from his deity position, his statutes removed throught the whole Lordran (all the statues missing from Anor Londo, and the Sunlight altar broken statute were his').
Some people claim that Solaire of Astora, the guy that engages in jolly cooperation, is this human incarnation. Here the reasons:
- He's obsessed with finding his own sun, or in other words, becoming a god again, similarly to his father, who would be the closest we have to a god of the sun. This would imply either that he lost memory of his time as god, or that he's trying to reedem himself at the eyes of gods.
- The statue of a mother with his child at the Sunlight altar wields the same sword that Solaire uses.
- He is part of the covenant (Warriors of Sunlight) that the broken statue represents.
- The item sunlight medal says in it's description that the sunlight god still watches "closely" over his fellow warriors. He indeed watches over your back in a couple of boss figths.
- He's the only npc that can use the lightning spear, a miracle we had only seen being used by Gwyn.
Now, there's this other possibility I recently heard of. Lautrec being the first son, because:
- He seems to hate the firekeepers for no obvious reasons. This could mean that he's taking revenge on his father because of the demotion, since Gwyn's goal is to preserve the fires, and the firekeepers help with that. This would imply a demotion retaining memory of his god status.
- Unlike Solaire, he's as agressive as you would expect from a god of war.
- He gives you a sunlight medal when you help him, too.
- He is said to have the favour of a godess, like the old greek demi-gods often did.
I hope I didn't forgot anything. Rigth now, I'm not sure which one I would go for. Possibly Solaire, because his plot seems like it has been given more work, but coming FromSoft, I would expect any imaginable trolling, as long as it can make us sad.
