The Quarantine Zone was my favorite level of Halo 2, other than maybe Delta Halo or Outskirts.

So, yes, I liked fighting the flood.

It was kind of satisfying to blow them apart with the shotgun. I don't have anything against the enemy type, but the levels they were usually designed fucking terribly, and on top of that, if it was a flood level, flood were the ONLY thing you fought except for that one part on Halo 2 with the big sentinel things. They should have brought those back. I would be lying if I said I missed the flood in reach though.

The most fun I've had fighting the flood was the first level they were introduced in, which was in Halo CE. Especially the end of the level where you escort a large platoon of I think 14 Marines. It was especially entertaining to see them duke it out with the Flood. They seem to have less trouble fighting the flood when they get into a sort of fortified position, but for some reason they have the most trouble with the tiny swarming squishy infecting flood. Probably because they're pretty much one hit kills to Marines.

Actually, most (more than 75% of them, if I recall correctly) flood levels involve sizeable amounts of non-flood types as enemies.

Allow me to elaborate:

343GS - Flood and Covenant
The Library - Just Flood
Two Betrayals - Flood, Covenant, and Sentinals
Keyes - Flood and Covenant
The Maw - Flood, Covenant, and Sentinals

The Oracle - Flood and (heretic) Covenant
Sacred Icon - Flood and Sentinals
Quarantine Zone - Flood and Sentinals
High Charity - Flood and Covenant

Floodgate - Just Flood
The Covenant - Flood and Covenant
Cortana - Just Flood
Halo - Flood and Sentinals

I enjoyed the Flood in small doses. You get that feeling of being an immovable wall, a metaphorical dam against the... flood, I suppose. However, if there's an entire level of nothin' but Flood (I'm looking at you, "Cortana"), it begins to get tedious.

The Flood is Halo CE is the reason why my friend and I skipped a few days off school we loved that shit.

I liked the in Halo 1, then again Halo 1 was the only Halo campaign I actually liked until Reach came back out.

After that. No. I dreaded fighting the flood. Halo 3, Cortana level, I am looking, nay, glaring at you!

My reactions to fighting the Flood in the first three Halo games can be summarized with the following:

Halo CE:
"Holy crap, what the hell are these things?! There's so many of them! GAH! Did that one have a human face?! Ack, they've got exploding ones too! Well they're not quite as fun to shoot as the Covenant, but they're a nice change of pace. Okay, I blew up Installation 04, that'll take care of them!"

Halo 2:
"Aw man, not these things again! Wait, what? They have a leader...that TALKS?! That's...weird..."

Halo 3:
"*Sigh* Let's just get this over with, shall we?"

One of the reasons why I like ODST and Reach so much is because there's no Flood. I think the conflict between humanity and the Covenant is far more interesting.

I enjoyed the flood a lot! Provided fun, challenging gameplay - matched with fun, creative levels!

EDIT: Big exception to this is the "Cortana" level. That was a huge *****.

"That Stench, I've smelled it before"

While playing halo CE and encountering the flood for the first time I was too startled and busy sitting on the edge of my seat with a twitchy trigger finger to notice that the flood weren't actually that good as far as AI or combat goes. Sure, replayability is very limited on the Library, but I remember that the first time I didn't mind it at all, and it was part of a fairly important plot twist.

In the second game I was too blinded by the awesomeness of fighting besides elites to complain about anything, but I remember the level being far too long and sometimes ridiculously hard. Later on in High Charity with Master Chief it worked much better, however.

I liked the flood in halo 3, it was more balanced, the image of the living and intelligent flood started with the Gravemind in halo 2 was completed- the sequence where you fight besides the flood to get to Truth is just pure awesome. I must admit that the level Cortana is quite lame, however, it probably being the hardest level, filled with those ranger floods that shoot spikes and are bullet sponges.
I do love the story elements of the level, though. The "What's your name? Very nice to meet you, John" (Read Fall of Reach) almost made me cry in the midst of all the alien super mutant ninja space zombies of doom slaughtering.

In the first game they appealed to me in a good way. I mean it breaks up the massive war with the covenant so we have a variety.

I'm still mad ODST and Reach didn't have the flood.

It would make no sense to have the Flood in Reach, they weren't even released yet. As it has been said in this thread, that didn't happen till the first Halo, so having them in any game that is set before the first Halo is just plain wrong and stupid.

ODST is perfect the way it is. There was no reason to have a token appearance of the Flood; it would have just cluttered up the game.

-------------

I hate the Flood. They are the whole reason I can't beat Halo 3 on legendary. ODST and Reach have no Flood and I beat them just fine on legendary.

I admit I kind of enjoyed soloing my way through Cortana on legendary in a masochistic way(and maybe a skull or two turned on)... it was one of the few levels of the game that was really consistently challenging, and I felt that they did do a good job with the atmosphere. But it was pretty fucking annoying the way gravemind kept screwing up the flow and the camera whenever he talked to you.

Initially, yes. But it got old after the second clone level of the Library.
It became outright maddening the third time around.

I loved fighting them in the first two Halo games, those were my favourite parts. I particularly enjoyed the final missions of the first one and the Covenant/Flood missions in the second one. Not so much the third game, or Halo Wars. Still haven't played Reach yet.

I loved the Library... A lot of people criticize it, but it was fun as hell on Legendary with a pal. Seriously difficult but goodness it was thrilling at the time. In the second Halo they were fun to fight as well, but in the third it felt tiresome, mostly due to the fact that the third Halo was tiresome in general. Regardless, yes, I did enjoy fighting the flood.

You're missing the point. The Flood was not there because they made for good gameplay, the Flood was there because they made for a good story. The first time playing through Halo, fighting them was fine for someone paying attention to the story because they were a mysterious and scary enemy, the ultimate secret held by these ancient constructs. Thankfully, some small things about how they were fought in each game made them bearable on the first playthrough. Subsequent playthroughs not so much, but anyone who cares about Halo's story (because it is a great sci-fi war story) didn't mind on the first time through.

In Halo Wars, that was just an unforgivable betrayal of canon. It made no sense at all for the Flood to show up then. Humanity had no idea the Flood existed until the events of Halo, so for any humans to discover their existence before then is just a horrible canonical failure. That's what happens when Bungie completely withdraws from a project; it made sense to have it designed by Ensemble, but they should have had their own creative team do the story and music.
pfff thats barely even non-canon. Now the the great journey, THAT is non-canon.

I've noticed all my friends hate the flood too but i thought they were awesome. I had no idea what to do with a shotgun before i met them. I think they might have ruined being the arbiter though cause i was hoping to cut up my marine buds, not some smelly mushroom people.

This would be true if the Flood actaully made any sense in the story. They didn't.
The forerunners built and activated the Halo Network to kill all sentient life in the galaxy to starve the flood to extinction.........BUT kept samples of the Flood ON halo? WTF? How did they even survve on halo without having anything to eat for a 1 million years or whatever?
I believe the reason cited for this was: They were kept for further research purposes. Research by whom? The forerunners died off when the Halo network activated, so who's going to research them?

The whole point was that their AI were intended to be stupid, or 'like zombies' as you said, because that's what they were.
I personally enjoyed fighting them for the change of tactics it required: no more standing behind cover, no more finding distance to get classy headshots... it was a difficulty brought by diversity.
The reason they were included was because of the same reasons games use different classes of enemies: you might well create a poll on whether people enjoyed fighting the krogan in Mass Effect, or the spiders in Minecraft.
There really is no other reason to dislike fighting them than because they act differently.
