The fifth book being so damn good
Order was DULL man, Prince was, in my opinion, a striking improvement on Goblet and Order (Obviously Azkaban is the best book, and genuinely a stellar piece of fiction, whereas the other books are just average to great young adult fantasy)

Personally, I grew up with the films, in that, I'm 15, so when Stone came out i was one, I started the series when I was like 9, by which time all of them but Prince and Hallows were out, so i read the first four books in the space of a month, and the next three within like two years. That said, I did see the Stone movie when I was five in the cinema, in fact, it was the first film I ever saw. As a film enthusiast Stone obviously has a special place in my heart, and even age five, I had never been so amazed at anything. I saw every film in theaters after that. And the series has become like a definitive aspect of my life up to this point, I adore all the novels, and all the films, because they put me in the position of my younger self, gaping in awe at a boy flying around on a quidditch pitch and recoiling in terror at an evil wizard who's name is never spoken.

But back to the original question, no, I wont miss the series, it had a decent end and a great close. It's had its run, and it knows it's over. It was great while it lasted, but sometimes, you just gotta say goodbye.

I lost interest after the first 2 movies. I guess the real thrill with Harry Potter was discovering the world and the magic. Once that was done, there was nothing left for me.
Maybe you should give the third one a try. This is where the story starts to develop and the movies start to find their own, much darker style. the first two were made by Chris Colombus (I think) which turned them into bright, carefree movies for children. Believe me, they get much more grown up and feature some rather nasty elements.

OT: I saw the last movie last Saturday and can close the story without regrets. It's OK, I don't feel a deep emotional void of loss or dance around on destroyed HP DVDs. It was fun while it lasted, now I'm looking forward to the Hobbit.
I have seen them all (except for the last one) but I didn't care for any past the first 2. I guess I am kid at heart because I prefer the first two movies to the rest.

It will be forgotten just like the others film like Lord of the Ring and The Matrix. Remember those? They used to be popular when the first film wasut but once the films were finish, the popularity will died away except for the hardcore fans.

I'm kinda in two minds.. the movies were never spot on to the books, it would be extremely hard for them to be, but I guess I didn't mind watching them. It'll be weird without all the Hype about Trailers and stuff but I guess i'll live.

I started reading the books back when I was 11! That was well over 13 years ago. It definately feels like an end of an era for me. Sad to see it go.

Neither. For me, it will be cherished because it was a great series and most of all - it ended and wasn't milked to death.

P.S. I didn't want to choose "Missed", because that might imply that I want to see more of it.
I feel the same. At least it ended with it's integrity intact.

Although, I'm still hoping for a serious HP RPG that doesn't revolve around Harry but I guess people just don't make nice things anymore.

It doesn't really matter to me. I read books 1-5 and lost interest. I saw a couple of the movies but I wasn't terribly impressed.

I know it's a beloved franchise for a lot of people but I'm pretty tired of hearing about it.

I WILL WATCH THAT SHIT!

OT: They will be missed. Perhaps Rowling will do something else involving the Harry Potter universe, which may inspire a new movie series. If that happens, however, I would hope that the movies stay faithful to the source material.

Indifferent. Apart from reading the first couple of books, and watching (I think) 3 of the films, I never really was too interested in the franchise. I might get round to watching or reading it all at some point, but it be probably be because I am bored, not interested.

I'm rather indifferent about the whole thing. I never got into the books, and the movies didn't interest me. So, it's time to let the curtain down, and wait for the next big thing to come along.

Hopefully it doesn't in-dignify itself like Star Wars did. Lets be honest, it's better to go out while on top than to slink into a stagnant grave.

I'll admit, I was 13 when it first came out in the U.S. Bought the first book shortly after it's release, and loved it from the very beginning. I'm kinda the same way with the movies as I am with the books now and days.

However, I'm not upset that the movie series has to end. I mean, the careers of Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint seem to have gone the way of many of the first Star Wars actors before they've even begun, and now have to work extra hard to be recognized as actors and not as the characters they portrayed.

I second both of those statements. I only recently got into the series and I'm finding the lore interesting so i was hoping that she brings out some extra stuff about the other things that happen (I'm curious about some of the other wizarding schools) but i just hope she doesn't find a way to milk harry and the other characters.

Overall i wont miss it but it will be a shame if this is the end.

*puts on Hipster Glasses* I liked Harry Potter before it was popular. *takes off Hipster Glasses* Now, with that out of the way...

Harry Potter has been a part of my life since I read the first book. I got it for Christmas in 1997, it was recommended for young fans of Fantasy in the Science Fiction Book Club, of which my mother is a member. After that, the releases of new books and movies were always met with joy by me. The November movie releases always took place around my birthday, which is the 19th, so attending the movie became a birthday ritual of mine. Those movies released in July allowed us to attend on my boyfriend's birthday, which we just did this weekend.

I attended Harry Potter release parties, in costume (often as Katie Bell, since she wasn't deeply described and shares my name, albeit she spells it wrong) with my social group in High School, all of whom were fans.

In my High School days I indulged in fan fiction and role playing, most of which I outgrew. I played the TERRIBLE EA computer games, only 1 and 2, but somehow they were so awful they were good.

After a near fist fight with my mother on the front staircase trying to decide who would read book 5 first we decided to read it aloud as a family, two chapters a night, one by me, one by my mother. My father read only one aloud, since his dyslexia makes reading somewhat difficult for him. This trend continued with books 6 and 7. Unfortunately that meant most of the bigger plot points were ruined for me. "It's Sirius who dies in book 5, Snape kills Dumbledore in book 6! He's the Half-Blood Prince!" My mother and father lost faith in Snape at the conclusion of book 6. Since he's my favorite character (and I have a crush on him as portrayed by Alan Rickman, it's his damn voice, so sexy...) I never did.

I cried when Severus died.

I will miss the effect it had on my life. I miss the camaraderie I had in High School with my friends, calling each other by our made up Potter names, sighing over our crushes, wishing they were real, and debating the novels. I am sad that that part of my life is over. I am not sad to see the franchise end, since all good things must. I should like to see more happen in the Potter Universe, but let Harry have what he always wanted, a private, normal life.

One question.
Why are there really good writers that write books because they like writing and are actually good at what they do, you know, like Terry Pratchett.
And then there are writers such as Stephenie Mayer and J.K.Rowling, that are just happy with their big pile of cash and stop writing.

Just wondering.. .

Your argument baffles me. You know Terry Pratchett isn't writing anymore, right? He's got early onset Alzheimer's. And you do know Meyers has started another series, right? She already published one not Twilight book. So, you're confusing me.

Terry's Discworld series, while stunningly spectacular, might have benefited from a proper conclusion instead of "I stopped writing because I have Alzheimer's and can't anymore." Rowling set out to write about a boy's 7 years at a Boarding School, that was the plan all along. She knew where it was going to end when it began. Stopping it there gives it a sense of completion and not beating a dead horse. Perhaps she'll continue to write other plots within that world, that remains to be seen. Maybe she wanted to wait until the Potter Saga finally came to a close.

And honestly, for all I hate Twilight and everything associated with it, she set out to write a romance between a human and vampire, and that too, needed to come to an end. Now she's writing something else, so she didn't just 'stop and be happy with her pile of cash.' And I HATE defending Meyers. I really, really do.

Since Pratchett never planned to tell a specific story and had multiple plots running (the Witches, the Wizards, the Watch, and Death) there never had to be an ending like there had to be in Potter. However, as I said, some closure would be nice. Discworld stopped because he got sick, end of story. It's depressing but true. There will never be another Pratchett book. He needs a home health aid to remind him to put on his socks, among other things. He still has ideas but doesn't have the capacity to put them down. Perhaps his daughter Rhianna will pick up where he left off. She has some of his talent, she wrote the plot for Overlord the video game and its sequel, and you can see how she learned from her father.

Umm... except Rowling IS currently working on various projects. Did you actually bother to look up what you were saying? Just because none of them are out yet, and she can afford to take her time, doesn't mean she isn't writing.

And PLEASE don't compare her to the waste of space that is Meyer. Meyer couldn't write an authentic/believable human character if her life depended on it. The only reason her books sell at ALL is because they're the same as porn for many mindless females (NOT saying all females are mindless. I know several females personally who hate Meyer's work with a passion)
*Raises her hand* I am one such female. While neither the Potter series nor the "Twilight Saga" are literature, at least one of them uses proper grammar and punctuation. There is a flickr account, I /think/ of some girl who took apart Twlight (literally broke the binding) so she could highlight all the grammatical errors and correct them. I wish I could find it now, it was brilliant. Spent a whole day reading it.

But The Discworld Series, while my favorite of all, isn't literature either. It's just really, really good. But, I've already replied to the original poster, just throwing in my two cents of Meyer hatedome.

I really don't get any particular sadness or OH NOES MY CHILDHOOD IS OVER hyperbole surrounding this, it's not like you're losing access to either the books or the movies just because the last part is finally in theaters.

As far as there being new books, the only thing I can see J.K. Rowling doing from here is going back and telling stories of Harry's parents. I think continuing Harry's story would be a bad idea seeing as he and the characters surrounding him have overcome the worst possible thing to happen short of the end of the world.

EDIT:
