So I found my old NES in a box..... after shedding a couple of tears while looking at the old thing i decided to plug it in, after staring at the screen a couple of minutes saying "WOW it still works" and looking at the damn x360 that was lying there busted, I started playing a couple of the games I had, Dr. Mario, Dragon Quest, Ducktales ect.... eventually i found the Super Mario bros cartridge in the box.

After reaching 1-2 i was going for the warp zone but then stopped and thought "hey maybe I'll skip it" and went with the normal progression of the game... then it hit me I had never played the whole game without using the warp zone.... and damit I have to admit it Super Mario bros is a freaking great and hard game XD, I eventually finished it not in my first run but finished it, so i thought about SMB 2 and 3... right now i just finished SMB 2 ( amazing as well but really hard) and started SMB 3 I'm in world 3.

So what about the rest of the escapist, have you tried finishing SMB without using the warp zone? what about SMB2/SMB3

Well, yes. I've beaten all the NES Mario games without warping. I've completed all of them with 100% completion. It's a tie between Lost Levels(SMB 2 in Japan) and SMW for the hardest levels to complete. Lost Levels probably pulls ahead, though. Goddam stages with wind.

I think Mario 1 is easier when you don't warp. Since you're not skipping the easy levels, you have more chances to save up lives and be big Mario when you get to the harder levels. I've beat Marios 1-3 without warping, and the original is still the most challenging. Was playing the Lost Levels with friends a few months ago, but we're still at one of the levels in world 7.

Well, yes, that is IMO the best way to play the game. I don't really see the point of purposefully skipping most of a games content, beside speed running or just wanting to see the ending quickly.

Indeed, I think Brawl in the Family once made a strip about Mario completely stressing over having used Warp Whistles to cheat himself out of a bunch of worlds. In games where there are no saves and Game Over could mean a complete restart, skipping ahead to prevent loss of crucial lives/continues is understandable, while more experienced players would try to make it the whole way through. Sort of like an early instalment of difficulty levels.

I have finished SMB without warp zones. Only worlds 7 and 8 are difficult to me now. A much greater challenge to me is beating the Lost Levels without warp zones, while also avoiding the negative warps.

I mostly played SMB1 in the arcades and the warps were great when you wanted to get deeper into the game without having to replay the early levels over and over and over again.

Not sure it's really tougher than SMB3, it just stingier about extra lives. But then SMB1 was designed to separate kids from their quarters.

I've done it at least once, I haven't played the game all the way through many times. Most of the times I did however, it was on the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe gameboy version, which made things easier since you got to save and quit between every level, giving you unlimited continues.

Idk about SMB3, which I do not really like at all, but I never warp in the first 2. Some of my favorite levels are the ones you skip past if you warp.

I only use Toad in SMB2, because Toad is awesome.

i can't vote without a yes option. post will suffice. it's possible, but it's been awhile; memories are fragmented. i recall a desire to and attempt to. success verification inconclusive.

Beaten Mario 3 without them.
Goddamn some of those final underworld stages are insidious.

One night, passing the controller back and forth between my brother and me.
Doubt this counts for anything, but it WAS the All-stars version of the game for SNES.

No I haven't. I should try that some time.

EDIT: Why do all the Poll options basically amount to "no"?

Yup.First time I beat the game I wasn't even aware there was warp zones.I only found out about them later in a magazine

Come to think of it I've beaten all the 2D Mario games I've played without using warp zones or whatever the equivalent is now

Yes I have, back in the day when I could spend the day playing video games. In fact I once made it all the way to world 7-1 without dying once. Sadly I couldn't complete it with the one life and have never been able to recreate that feat.

And there's no much in the way of an ending.

I can see why someone might want to pick up the game and speed to where they left off, though. I mean, this is an era where consoles didn't have saves and passwords weren't even all that common.

Then again, I've beat the game in a single sitting multiple times. It's not horirbly long once you're used to it, but it was a lot of folks' entry into gaming, and so it's not hard to see why it would take them FOREVER to finish it.

Yeah. 1-3 plus World 1 (never played through World 2).
I'm no expert, but playing through all of Mario 3's levels took a fairly long time.
