Whenever you've got the need to keep tabs on friend and family that live out of town/state/country, what's the way you prefer to go about it, and why?

I tend to stick with IMs more than anything, with networking and texting in close second. (Before any of you gag or laugh, I will inform you that I'm every bit at literate with those as I am here.) I'm not one for long phone conversations since I always feel so awkward when I have to come up with a reason to hang up.

What about you guys?

Mostly texting, but I would say I also call people a bit. And if anyone here has ever gotten any PMs from me they can attest to the fact that I tend to send them in letter format.

I communicate with my friends (who are all long distance because I moved) via both telephone and networking.

Combination of email and phone. I use the phone wherever possible, because I much prefer actually talking to someone instead of reading text off a screen. Of course, that isn't always practical due to time and/or money constraints, so while email is less personal, it's much more convenient.

I have relatives all over the world in different timezones, one of my nrothers does not have internet access and a very limited phone card so i find facebook to be the best method. I can just drop a message which can be replyed to at any time, or send instant messsages using the built in feature.

MSN instant messaging. Because I'm always on this computer.
You too, eh? I'm also here at least 56 hours a week, so it's hard to miss me.

Face to face interaction, I'll talk to my mates at school and nowhere else, I refuse to communicate over long distances.

You forgot smoke signals. But really I don't keep in touch with people.
You know, I was REALLY considering putting that one up, but I just didn't have the room.

...Then what do you call this?

Kidding, of course.

I have a group of friends with whom I used to be in college together, but now I only see them in the weekends, due to different universities. We e-mail, msn and sms a lot though, and the best of all: we have a forum. Works great for us.

Well, it's more of a balance of a bunch of those:

E-mail for work related stuff, Facebook for catching up with people I don't see often, phone calls for making plans and chatting (AIM for people far off), and texting for a few of my friends who tend to text more than call.

I mostly keep in contact through MSN, but seeing as my friend lives in AUS and I am in the UK, the time zones can be awkward so I often just E-Mail him

AIM, but prefer face to face interaction. You can learn so much about a person by seeing how they behave when talking to them.
