So, my question is, how do you play Pokemon? Do you concern yourself with the distribution of effort values and finding just the right individual values, or do you prefer to simply enjoy the game on a basic level? Which in-depth mechanics, if any, do you exploit?
Yes I do. Because I play it online and it is worth it. 5th gen is by far the best.

Riiight..the mechanics. IV and EV training and the Bracer breeding tactics.
The narrator in the videos is a little annoying, but it's interesting to observe a skilled player in action. Also, I had no idea about the rotating feature. That looks like it makes for some very unpredictable outcomes.
The narrator is me. Rotation battles are my favorite style of battle. It's tricky, unpredictable and just damn fun.
My apologies. The videos aren't bad! I actually assumed that it was a popular Youtube series of some sort XD

Are rotating battles now the standard or are more traditional-style battles still an option?
Apology accepted. Thanks. Ha ha..I'm afraid not since 1) I don't use Pokegen to make my pokemon. 2) I don't use the Replay feature. 3)I don't emulate the game. (And yeah...it bothers me seeing that on youtube)

Traditional 1v1 and 2v2 is still there. But Triple(which I haven't done yet) and Rotation(my favorite) add new elements in battle. Give Rotation a shot one day. You would regret it.
What is Pokegen? I didn't think emulators were capable of partaking in the meta game.
Pokegen is a program used to create pokemon. Max evs, ivs, movelist that and abilities including unreleased Dream World abilities that most youtubers use for their battles and 90% gives them a BIG advantage. I find those players...shallow. And it is illegal for the metagame. But Wi-Fi friend battles is anything goes.

I myself am a huge fan of competitive battling. Its a lot of what I watch on Youtube and I have done a bit of it, working on my RU team right now actually. Its a highly complex strategy game once you look past the basic, simple campaign. (Which might I add I am also a fan of)

Oh wow, that's awful. What's the point? I don't know if you're a fan of Yahtzee or not, but he mentioned something like this in his video on Minecraft. In essence, he said that the spectacle is only impressive insofar as you have to work for it. If you can just snap your fingers and have whatever comes to mind, then who cares?

I mostly go with simple stuff since I play through the game first with my starter and the main legendary plus some Pokemon on the way, and am also doing 2 Nuzlocke runs. But now that I actually know how to EV train I want to re try that especially since I got Pokerus in my Black game.

There isn't. Those "fans" are just shallow and lazy.

EV training the Black/White is so much easier and better. What's the pokemon you plan on training first?

I have always loved Pokemon at the simplest roots, especially aesthetically. Honestly though, as hesitant as I was to buy Pokemon Black, I am very happy I did! Though some, if not most of these next gen creatures are just ridiculous
(like this monstrosity of nature named garbador... http://www.toplessrobot.com/1.%20Garbodor.jpg), they really did manage to stay true to many great mechanics of the game we have grown to love, and innovated on a lot! (rotation battles being one, as mentioned before).

No matter what though, the first two generations (Canto and Johto) will always be my favourite :)!

Yeah, I've definitely had no shortage of reading material. I've learned enough to explain EV training to a friend in detail XD

I play both ways. Going through the story I just catch and train normally, but when I hit the end-game I start breeding for IVs, nature, and moves, then EV training. I wouldn't say I "exploit" any actual in-game mechanics though, just "utilize" them. :p

I don't battle much in the meta-game though. I find that my immediate friends are absolute pushovers, but I get demolished if I try to battle online. I mostly do the extra training for my own pride and self-satisfaction.

Either a Glaceon or a Serperior. Glaceon is my favorite Eevee and I did try to EV train one before, but didn't know how to do it properly at the time, and I really like Serperior.

If you have the Bracer items, Equip the Lens and battle Litwicks(Ev train at 50. You'll see the results.)
Serperior is a tricky one since...it's fast, bulky and has decent atk/sp atk.

For a while I tried the whole EV training thing, but it bored me to death. My training regiment consists of leveling up all of my pokemon at least five times between cities. This way, I'm usually prepared for the boss battle. I usually like to a keep a team with a machoke and a graveler, if not a machamp and a golem. They're both extremely powerful pokemon in the campaign, and I like to keep at least one of them in reserve in case a fight is going south.

Did you take advantage of items (vitamins, Macho Brace, Power items, etc.) when you were EV training? Without them, it's quite a slog.

Sexy! Why is sexy not a poll answer?!

And I just train whatever sweepers look cool, really. I don't play competitively, takes far too much time.

I've always had a soft spot for pokemon in my heart, since it was the first proper game I ever owned way back on GBA Colour with Pokemon Yellow (the most hax pokemon game ever BTW).

My interest usually waxes and wanes as products come out. For example, I was completely obsessed with taking my Pokewalker everywhere, but I'm really nonplussed by the Pokemon Dream World. As far as I can tell, my love of these things will depend on how many hoops I have to jump through. With the Pokewalker all I had to do was turn on my DS, chuck a pokemon on and start walking, but the PDW needs you to log in, have your Wi-Fi active, transmit your pokemon in-game, then wait for every damn screen to load every time you change the direction you're facing in the game. It's just too much trouble.

Call me back when they've finally made a proper full 3D Pokemon game.

A little. I'm just not interested in competition. I have a few friends into that, but I play the game more casually.

In that case, EV training probably wouldn't be of too much use to you. That being said, if you have the money for the items, EV training isn't very arduous at all and you would almost certainly defeat friends of comparable levels who don't EV train, assuming you completed it carefully.

I am a godawful Pokémon player, in terms of the actual strategy. I'm a horrible RPG player in general.

Normally, my attack strategy is to be as strong as I can be and heal myself when necessary. So in Pokémon, I don't really think too hard about attack combos or effects or abilities or anything. Essentially, I go with the 'tank' method.

Have you started playing competitively yet? I just finished EV training my Slaking.
