I've read a lot of stuff by Tolkien. LOTR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and a book full of random tales by him. It's all been ages ago though, I barely really remember how LOTR and The Silmarillion go.

I think you have to read all his works to get a full appreciation of what he created, it makes most subsequent fantasy seem rather shallow by comparison, even some of the good stuff.

I've read The Hobbit, The Fellowship, The Two Towers, and most of Return of the King. I just couldn't finish it :/

read lotr, hobbit, got the hobbit comic which is basically the same... ehm silmarillion which I prefer over lotr, its really like a fantasy bible, and the children of hurin which I also recommend, its a lot darker than a lot of ronalds work

I've read LotR every year for the last 12 years now. Read the Hobbit six times and the Silmarillion eight times.

i have, and was unpleasantly surprised to find it painful to continue. I honestly, from a literary standpoint, NOT JUST COMPARING IT WITH THE FILMS, thought it was a horrible, boring, drab read in which tolkien thought it necessary to go "look at me! I invented a mythology and a language! did you look? guys? are you looking at my mythology?"

that's just my humble opinion, though.

Yeah.....no.

I tried starting with The Hobbit, but Tolkien's writing style is freaking boring. After the 4th page of scenery porn in a row, I had enough. Tolkien has nice ideas (stolen from norse mythology) but as a storyteller, he's rather sub-par.

Doesn't mean I don't like the story and the characters, but his works were ideally suited to film adaptation due to a single frame being worth a thousand words....which cuts down on his word vomit considerably.

Read it and every year or so I challenge myself to read it again. Honestly, wonderful setting and culture but not very deep as far as stories go. It's a nerdtastic odyssey; a book in which to escape to when the world you know is not as fantastic. I'll stick to re-reading Pratchet, Abnett and Vonnegut

I read the Hobbit.

Then about 4 years later I tried reading The Lord of the Rings, but it bored the tears out of me so I gave up.

Curse thee, I hope many funnels do to you what they did to that poor GM in your avatar. I honestly couldn't finish the Silmarillion, maybe I am just an awful reader.

I have a bit of weird relationship with the Silmarillion. It's my favorite book ever, but still I sometimes have to plow through parts of it to finish it. Some bits are more interesting than others. I love the Narn i hîn Húrin and the Akallabêth, but I hate some of the exhaustive descriptions earlier on in the book.

I've read the Hobbit at the first two books. Personally, I kind of disliked to books because the pacing is off. Seriously Tolkien? 10 pages describing trees again? I will finish the trilogy sometime or another... I just usually take a 1 or 2 year break between books.

I rarely read books. The movies were good, but I've already seen them, don't see much benefit from reading the books. No matter how much better they are, the ending's still ruined.
