I do see people saying it alot, but I never make threads, and I would bet alot of money that someone's going to say they've seen one like this before.

This thread has been done before.
Sorry couldn't resist, considering i haven't made many threads about half of them have had people saying it's been done before or redirect me to a thread that might help me out.

Edit- And Davey Woo wins the money!

Option for once or twice please? I usually make threads in a different light of an original so yes I leech but I don't copy.

Once, but the topic hadn't been done in a few months and had degraded into a flame war.

Uh only once, but I see it happen all the time and it is really annoying. Who cares if it's been done before? It's not like you're going to dig up a three month old thread just so you can ask if Halo or Call of Duty is better. Only if the thread has literally been made ten minutes ago is it acceptable. On the other hand, people need to come up with more original threads.

What's the answer to choose for people who have 1/8 threads like that? I mean, it's exactly halfway between never and 1/4. What would the answer be?

By the way, my own personal answer is never.

What I was about to say verbatim, I've made about 5 threads on this site, one of them being a forum game, while I admit it was very unoriginal, it hadn't been done on this particular site before so it wasn't attacked too harshly.

There's a simple mathematical equation you can use to determine the reaction you'll receive from posting something that has been done before.

X = A/B*C

A = Number of threads you've created that have been done before
B = Length of time, in Days, since the thread was last done
C = Number of times this thread has been done.
X = Visceral reaction from other forum members, represented by a cold, absolute numerical value

Well, something along those lines.

Never; in the time I've been at the Escapist I've only felt the need to create a single thread and as it was a discussion of a personal experience it hadn't been done before. Seriously kids if you don't have something original to make a discussion of and the thread from before about the same thing hasn't died yet go post there instead.

So far, none. Then again, I've only created one and it didn't hit off too well... I use the search button though.

Almost never, though I haven't made more than a few and those I searched fairly thoroughly beforehand. I figure if you want to discuss something it's worth making sure other people might want to too.

It happens to me. The problem is I can't tell if they are serious, just assing about, being an ass, or a combination.

By even posting "This has been done before, you give it enought aknowledgement to validate it as a thread and not a zombie, which is to be shot in the head upon sight. My other issue is that it can really destroy a discussion by 1. leaving an uneasy and unsafe feeling in those involved 2. It is often copied by those who feign seniority or familiarity with the forums. Utterly turning half of the thread into "this has been done before", which in the grand scheme takes away from the responsible posts.

In short, by posting "this has been done before", you are becoming the greater evil.

Never have I gotten that reply. However all threads I create or reply to have a tendency to die shortly after I post.

most of the times i make a thread i try to make it a different type of tread but then someone goes and says that it has been done before and then the tread spirals downward from there.

i've made a few threads and i've never had someone say it's been done before. granted if i decided to make a thread every day then things may be different but i chose the threads i do start carefully to ensure they are original and, if in doubt, there's always the 'search' button to solve that particular conundrum.
