I know a few gay people, and some bisexual too. I'm straight-ish. I really like some men. No-one I know, but like Ewan McGregor, John Barrowman, and so on. But yeah, mostly girls. I feel comfortable around gay people, I just don't care about someone else's sexual preference.

2) Misogyny. Women are lamer than dudes, right? So why should a lady bring some awesome dude down to her level by having sex with him? Exactly: no good reason. So if you're gay enough to like ladies at all and are yourself a lady, the kindest thing you can do for society is to have sex with only ladies.
3) The dull distinction between the characters of men and women. Men are loners and it's gay to hang out with other men. Women love hanging out with women and that's how straight girls roll. And if some hanky-panky happens when you're with your friends, what's the big deal?
4) Women are just extra-wussy gay men already, with the smallest dicks evar and surprisingly big moobs (sometimes). Gay guys love hanging out with them and emulating them, straight guys can't handle their womanly ways. And if society already basically views them as gay guys, why shouldn't they have gay sex too?

Or literally any feeling about your teachers at school, or that annoying girl who talks too much. That is actually what your interest in somebody MEANS: that you want to have sex with them in some way or another. The result is that, practically, men are probably exactly as gay as women are, but it's easier for women to act on their homosexual desires for the above reasons.

I can't speak for every culture, but at least in the US, the answer is a resounding yes.
Probably because that while the thought of two women making out and having sex is considered hot (I'd be lying if I said I didn't agree... what? I'm a product of my society), the thought of two men making out and having sex is considered repugnant, except for the subset of Yaoi fangirls, but that's besides the point.

To my mind the stereotype of the "typical" effeminate gay man is, in terms of prevalence and acceptance, very similar to the stereotype of the "typical" porn lesbian couple. Convenient maybe, but generally a grossly inaccurate and frankly offensive view of the LGBT community in general.
I've been openly gay since I was 15, and in my personal experience, the more ashamed of your sexuality you are, the more grief you seem to catch for it. I still meet the occasional person who tries to throw holy water on me, or just won't shut up about it, but I find for the most part if I present the attitude of "I'm gay" as I would present the attitude of "I like crisps", people, in general, just carry on.
I think the struggle that should be under review here is not the external struggle with society, but the internal struggle to overcome what we've been taught is "normal" and "right" and realize that we are who we are.
Now with all that said, no, I think there is no discernible difference between the genders when it comes to resolving that internal conflict. In my opinion it has more to do with the type of people you are surrounded with and how they treat you.

well men still pretty much rule society. men are into lesbians because i assume they would like to interject themselves in that situation and live up to the fantasy of having 2 women at a time. women are also imho more sleek and prettier than guys, so watching 2 make out/rated r is better than 2 men. gay men face more discrimination because the 'manly' men dont like to see their fellow men out with other men instead of the traditional woman (see machismo)

I have friends both male and female who are gay, and while I haven't polled them on this specific question, I would have to think (as guy here) that it would be easier for a girl to come out as gay. And I only say that because, as a guy, I acknowledge just how much of our lives are run by a sense of "manhood" or "masculinity".
Being gay or even PERCEIVED as gay is a mighty strike against that goal of being viewed as a man. Too much of our mindset from an early age is to live up to some mythical image of what a man is. A man is sports. A man is hunting and guns and cars and getting laid by a beautiful girl. Being gay, at least in a stereotypical manner, goes against all of those things.
And as a result, there's more backlash against a guy who's gay, than women.
As I said, this is coming from a guy's perspective. Men (for the most part) are way more accepting of gay females, than males. I think maybe it's because to many straight guys, they don't view themselves as having anything in common with a gay guy. They can at least say they have ONE thing in common with a lesbian.
Women, I'm sure have their own crosses to bear with their coming out as well, surely linked in part to the idea of being a real woman, meaning you get married and settle down and have kids ("REAL" Kids, not adopted, which for whatever stupid reason is viewed as less than).
I think it's a difficult question really. I don't know if anyone can definitively decide which is easier to live with, from a social standpoint.
