Poll: IGN is dead to me

I used to actually listen to what IGN said, but they don't know how to do an opinionated review. Like most big gamesites (Gamespot, Gametrailers) they just say what people expect them to say. Havent been to the site in years.

I do not feel like going into detail, thus I this shall be short. Reviews are based upon the genre the game represents, not gaming as a whole. Mass Effect is a 9.5 to the RPG genre, the same as Halo: Reach is to the FPS genre. This does not necessary mean they are superior to another game. You cannot compare different genres and therefore reviews are restricted to those specific categories.

When you see this list of games, you most likely think "this is a list of some of the best games ever made (Don't bother arguing that a game doesn't belong there, that isn't the point)

What would your first reaction be if I threw onto that list, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
According to IGN, I would be applauded.

When I load up my computor and look for gaming news, I jump to 4 sites. Escapist, Gameinformer, Kotaku and IGN. I have come to expect the most up to date and accurate news and reviews. I am now regretfully announcing that I have to pull IGN from that list. They gave the new XBLA pac-man game a 10

A perfect 10

When I see a 10, I jump to metacritic and if that number isn't above 97, the giver of the 10 is in serious trouble. 10s are reserved for the best of the best, on the singular page of the history books in a hundred years that mentions video games as a sector of pop culture, these are the games whose pictures will be there.

I don't know what you think, but a random Pac Man re-release, seriously!

the fact the game got a 10 means it full fills its niche market and more GTA offers loads of content for a immersion adult game
bayonetta for overally epic hack and slash games
and so on and so on

Considering this is an XBLA game I honestly wouldn't loose too much sleep over it.
Odds are the score is supposed to be relative to other arcade type games and not to gaming as a whole. The problem is that most arcade games really can't compare to other games. I mean I doubt that anyone who had a choice would pick any of the arcade games over a full AAA title.

Isn't this like special treating people with difficulties? Why should XBLA be singled out? Why shouldn't it be judge on the same terms as SC2,HL,CoD or any other AAA game?If I was to make a game would it be a 10/10 on a scale just for my game then? Just stupid thinking T.T"

While at it, no game deserves a 10, that would imply that every pixel in the game is perfect, which I'm 100% there is no game that got that.

Slightly off topic but what makes Half Life 2 so brilliant. I loved the first one mind you, It's one of the best fps games I've ever played. I didn't even finish the second. The whole thing was so average. Arcade shooting, a painfully slow story and bland, lifeless environments. Somebody tell me what makes it so great.

To be honest, I stopped caring what IGN said about games like 10 years ago, so i'm kind of indifferent to your anger.

Slightly off topic but what makes Half Life 2 so brilliant. I loved the first one mind you, It's one of the best fps games I've ever played. I didn't even finish the second. The whole thing was so average. Arcade shooting, a painfully slow story and bland, lifeless environments. Somebody tell me what makes it so great.

At the time the physics engine and the puzzles that came with it were absolutely amazing and never before seen, basically it's only fun if you play the whole game using nothing but the gravity gun.

For me the gravity gun was a pointless gimick. Also I played it on a console and the vehicle sections were hellish as a result.

yeah, most big review sites aren't really accurate, its better to check out the gameplay on youtube (and make up your own mind) and all those smaller review sites.

Fallout 3 is ok..but the rest are god awful. And did you play Pac-Man C.E DX? That game is awesome.

I have noticed this as well my friend.

It is easily seen as trolling when you blatantly state that games that a large amount of people like or even love are god awful. Not even that you think that they are god awful, that they are god awful.

Isn't IGN in everyone's back pocket? Like, the point where you can mail them a check with "8.5 or better plz" scrawled in the memo line and automatically get a good score on your game?

And I've never really cared for IGN. Most of their reviews that I've read were shit and passed by on all the good stuff in games.. and in some cases the bad stuff.

I'm sorry but I've just never met anyone... all my friends hate his guts.
However, after looking at some gameplay of the DX edition i have to say, looks like fun. Not "Borderlands-I-just-blew-the-torso-of-a-midget kind of fun but... Shitloads-of-fun-20-minutes-a-day kind of fun.

No no you don't seem to get it, if you are anywhere near where an arcade has EVER stood there is no way you have not met someone who didn't like Pac-Man. The game is old and was popular as fuck when it was made and is now a giant nostalgia bomb.

Yes, Pac-Man is that freaking big.
