It's not that Dedi servers are perfect, it's just that IWNet is that much less perfect. See, when i bought MW2, I was like, how bad can it be? I didn't really care about Dedicated servers, i'm not a clan anyways, so might as well leave them out, right? Wrong. I have never had open NAT, even afetr reinstalling the game completely, hacking was easier then ever, connection was slower then ever. I would buy MW3 if they were to fix all this. Just give us back the dedicated servers. but they don't, so they can save money having to redevlop the software from CoD 4 for a different engine. It's because IW are lazy and cheap, and they hate us, the PC gamers. Fuck you, IW.

Not having Dedicated servers saved me $60 on #2 and it looks like it will save me another $60 this time.
It HAS dedicated servers. It's just your progress in them cant be seen on the leaderboard. This wasn't even a long article you could miss information out, it was two paragraphs clearly explaining what is not, and what is going to be in the game.
You are correct, and I have clarified.

I was fully willing to buy the game and encourage my clan to do the same.
However, I choose not to support IWNet as a matchmaking service.

Not buying this shitbox game to begin with, though that is a bummer. No shocker that IW completely drops the ball again...

I think it's a good thing, in fact I wish EA would do the same with BF 3 across all platforms. It would be easier all around earning my unlocks on the unwashed masses and bringing them to a dedicated server afterward anyway, not to mention easier since I wouldn't have to wait for friends to be online to play.

GUYS this whole thing is NOT true. Robert Bowling treated that the only people who can stop you unlocking stuff in dedicated servers are admins. ONLY admins can control what people unlock. OP is now officially wrong.

In fact, I might just be marching up to Gamestation during the midnight launch.

I'll probably be getting in queue, joining in with the hype, striding into the store, picking up a copy of CoD 4 pre-owned & Modern Warfare 2 pre-owned. Then I'll be walking back out to the queue-ees cheering; slamming my newly acquired MW2 into the ground and grinding it in with my foot, waving my CoD 4 in the air with its pre-owned sticker still on it and burning the notes that make up the price of a freshly released Modern Warfare 3 (which will probably cost me my whole student loan).

That's how much of a waste of money I think MW3 is. I would find more enjoyment from that than spending the money on a shitty remake.

Skyrim, Saints Row, Halo & BF3 ftw!

Ho man, I guess everybody is going to boycott their upcoming release. Again.
Except once everyone has bawwwed their eyes out on the internet, they will all still buy it. Again.

I'm not too interested in competitive multiplayer, so this news and CoD in general elicit from me a big Meh. I like the campaigns of CoD, but I don't really feel like paying $60 for half of the game.

Really wish they would make a co-op focused title and take a year off from team deathmatch.

Today I discovered that the dedicated servers promised to PC gamers for MW3 have not been what everyone expected. Dedicated servers will be unranked only. This means that if you wish to level up and make any kind of progress you have to use IWNet, the matchmaking service introduced in MW2.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

The reason most of us wanted Dedicated servers is so that we can enjoy the game with a regular group of people, in a low ping environment, with the settings how we like them. While it's true that you can still do this, it's a moot point because you make NO PROGRESS while doing this. I don't want to have to play with a bunch of random people I don't know, across someone's inevitably terrible broadband connection, with no admins, just so I can level up.

So PC gamers, I ask you, Will you be getting MW3 in light of this news?

I for one, will be cancelling my pre-order if this doesn't change.
Source on the NO DEDICATED part.

Just because IWNet is used doesn't necessarily mean it will be user-hosted.

If I don't buy it, it's because I'm pretty much over FPS's until I see something original being offered.

That said, I have to ask, why should a private match allow you to progress? Whats the point of having progress tracked by lvls and leaderboards if people will be able to game system with regards to them in private matches?

Sorry bro, no pity here. You can do like the rest of us and make progress against random players with your inevitably terrible broadband connection, or cry about it on a forum and not buy the game. Oh well, one less person for me to shoot. There will be plenty others I'm sure.

Yup, sure does feel good to be a console gamer right about now.

Ehhhhhyup.

Oh, WHAT? Don't even start. I have EARNED some smug arrogance after all the crap you PC gamers have given me.

PS: The fact that you have access to videogames means that you forfeit your right to complain about anything, ever. Get some perspective.

Who cares about leaderboards on PC anyway? You'll be able to level up on dedicated servers. You just won't have your K/D ratio recorded. Which doesn't matter one bit.

you do understand why they did this? It would be like if console gamers could gain experience through private matches. If you can alter the settings of a match then you have an unfair advantage and it makes boosting so easy. not to say you will boost, but i think after the crapton of "MW2 isn't balanced" claims, It seems like they are trying to appeal to every audience and every opinion. They are screwed no matter what they do because SOMEONE will not like the choice they make. This just seems like something very insignificant to boycott a game for. If you want to play with friends on a dedicated server, you can, but you have to use matchmaking to level up. That seems fair to me. If you enjoy the MW series enough to want to buy it then just buy it and enjoy it. You aren't going to like everything about the game and as soon as you accept that you will probably enjoy the game alot more by reducing your expectations from "this game needs to have everything i want" to "There are things i like and things i don't like, but i'll just focus on the positives of this game and enjoy it for what it is." I'm not trying to be insulting or condescending, it's just if you always expect a game to have everything you want, it can never live up to it and you will be disappointed with every game you play. That's just my opinion though so take it for what it is. Holy crap that went way longer than i wanted... sorry lol
I understand why they did this. By why not just leave it like in CoD4. There it was all dedicated servers and it worked just fine, and everybody was happy.

I think it's just because CoD is viewed differently than it was at CoD 4. There is a much larger fanbase and it is much more competitive. People are always looking to cheat, boost, or find an easy exploit to be better than everyone else so IW has to be very careful about potential cheaters and balancing issues. I wish people weren't dicks in CoD but unfortunately... roll with the punches :(

There is no way that Infinity Ward can allow dedicated servers run by players to be ranked.
You say that like it hasn't happened in previous games.
It was never a good idea to begin with, and time has not sweetened it.
I take it you don't play PC games then.
Just because someone doesn't share your perspective, doesn't mean they have less experience in the field being argued. My only consoles is an Xbox (the old big black monster) and my iPod Touch. I've been a PC gamer since i was 6 years old, which is 17 years. Like a wise man once said: Assumptions is the mother of all f*ckups.

Listen. If you want to run ANY kind of ranking system, then it is always going to be a necessity to have common rules for the way points are scored, otherwise the system is meaningless. Once you leave the rules (read: the gameplay-terms) in the hands of others, and everyone starts using different rules for the games, the rankings become meaningless, because you're essentially not playing the same game anymore. And that's not counting the fact that the "alternative" hosts might not keep up the security standards that prevents cheating or tampering with the system.

Now you could argue that the system itself is more or less irrelevant in the big picture of the gameplay (as in: "who cares if people boosts or cheats somehow to improve their ranking, it's not like improving your ranking is hard anyway or means anything."). That is in fact a very reasonable argument to make, and i personally don't care if people get rankings faster than i do somehow. The thing about this argument though is that it also defeats the complaint OP makes about how this is "unacceptable". If rankings are so easy to attain, then why complain that you can't do it on dedicated servers? Just play some games on normal servers and get it up. On the other hand, if rankings are hard to get or take a lot of time to get, then the developers obviously intended them to not be served on a silver platter, in which case the concern of boosting being a problem suddenly becomes valid, and it becomes much easier to understand why the developers would want to keep the ranking system limited to their own servers.

At the end of the day, it's like complaining that earning Single Player achievements in StarCraft II aren't possible when playing in offline mode. You can argue that the single player achievements are meaningless (people typically focus on the competitive aka. multi-player area), and people "cheating" themself to them in offline mode doesn't really matter since it's just useless avatars on a character profile. But at the end of the day it's very understandable why Blizzard wants to keep the integrity of the system 100%, even for the Single Player part, and i understand why Infinity Ward wants to keep the same integrity for the online part of their system.

Well, I won't buy until it's on sale... for a price that I think the game I worth.. and when this happens nobody will play it anymore (mainly because the sequel came out...). I kinda understand their decision, but I guess there will always be someone who's butthurt because they think they are the one that got screwed over.

Come on guys, hate threads are soooo last year. Where are the constructive criticism threads?

Remember when a bunch of people signed a petition to get IW to get dedicated PC servers for MW2? That did nothing either. I'm converting to Xbox. Not that it will make a difference finding dedicated servers but because I can avoid hackers a hell of a lot more than on the PC.
You'd think that would be the case, but it's sadly not. I've ran into more hackers since I converted over to consoles, but that also has something to do with how much support a game is given on the console platforms. For example, at least recently, MW2 is pretty hack free. But put in a MW1 disc and it's damn near unplayable because of all the hackers. It really blows my mind.
