Fallout 3 gets points for being a Science Fantasy RPG game, as opposed to being a Sword and Sorcery game. While not the only one out there, Sci-Fi/Sci-Fantasy RPGs are not all that common. Even things like the JRPG series "Star Ocean" mostly degenerate into standard sword and sorcery.

I voted both are "good games", because while I personally prefer Fallout 3, I do think that with all the guilds and such Oblivion was a far deeper project. For all the people that knocked it, it had a lot of cool stuff in it, like doing a quest which was to find a missing mage (who was stalking around the school invisible to mess with the leader of that branch).

Of course I would also say that I think Morrowwind had some distinct advantages over Oblivion.

At any rate, Fallout 3 was the first game in the "new series" using these type of first person conventions. We shall see what happens when they release "New Vegas" and how far ahead it moves.

I figure if you like Oblivion, and if you liek shooters, you will love Fallout 3. If you dont like shooters, dont get fallout and if you dont like rpg's, dont get either.

I think its comparing apples to oranges.
Fallout isn't a shooter, all you have to do is mash V and click on body parts ;D
And what do you do with shooters? You point on something and click your mouse or press a button. big diff
Yes except with regular shooters the game doesn't pause.
You dont HAVE to use vats. Dont be such a smartass. VATS was implemented to cater to the rpgfans, a genre wich fallout previously belonged to. This way they manage to make this game appealing to both audiences wich great success. Except for you, now what? You want a fucking medal?

Oblivion annihilates Fallout 3 in my opinion. The reason is: A lot of reasons. Still love Fallout 3 so don't think I'm being biased :p I'm just being concise.

I enjoy them both; and I always have liked Fallout since the first one, but I didn't like some of the choices they made in Fallout 3. I was level 20 long before I beat the game; in Fallout 2 you're about ready to beat the game somewhere between 22-24 but the level "cap" is set at 99 and you need several million experience to get it. Fallout 3 is very sparse and there are only 32 main-ish quests and 57 others, so about 89 +-6; in Oblivion there are 200 quests and in Morrowind there are a whopping 427 quests. In Fallout 2 there are about 102 quests but then again there are about four separate ways to accomplish most quests and then there's all the gambling, pimping, boxing, slaving, grave digging and child killing you can do.

In Fallout 3 a settlement consists of maybe 20 people, in Fallout 2 they consist of anywhere from 35 to 200 visible, which seems much more realistic and walking through the ruined but repaired alleys of Reno with the jet addicts and hookers walking the streets amidst the "hellish glow" of neon lights of the casinos, porn studios and crime syndicates while hearing the combined yowls of those gambling and the moans of the people in a gutter is far more immersive than any of the settlements in Fallout 3 besides perhaps the Ghoul "city", and this was in 2D.

Fallout 3 lacked a way to travel in an interesting, fun and relativity quick way, I think that when a game lacks this and has long distances to travel it becomes less entertaining. In Oblivion you could level up your speed and acrobatics and move like ninja through the country-side. In Fallout 3 you can't move any faster than you could when you started the game besides quick travel, but that doesn't help when you haven't been someplace yet. I also hate that you can't just climb over a big pile of rubble, they make you use the labyrinthine subway systems to get around and force you into a more linear path around DC

I ended the plot in Fallout 3 out of boredom after 30 hours, because the only thing I was doing was searching for something new and killing enclave patrols to keep my armor repaired. I have never finished the main plot of Oblivion and I've played it for maybe 240 hours and I just started playing it again and I'm still finding new things I didn't know about. I've beaten Fallout 2 maybe seven times and I'm still finding new things in that game too.

Now that I've beaten Fallout 3 I honestly have no desire to play it anymore, so I think I'll wait for Fallout: New Vegas and see what the remains of Black Isle and Interplay can do with it.

While playing Oblivion of course.

Great point, i honestly think VATS is cheap.

Fall Out 3 feels like Oblivion which has had some extra development time basically
Pretty much this. Even though I love the Elder Scrolls 'verse Oblivion just felt rushed out the door. Not to mention all its persistent crashing was headache inducing. If I could have Oblivion as stable as Fallout 3 then it would easily be Oblivion but after the game decided it wanted to crash and screw over my high level Dark Elf Vampire Assassin I haven't bothered to play the game since. It honestly pissed me off with all the crashing and corruption of saves whereas at least Fallout 3 is stable in comparison which kept it from ruining the immersion for me.

Fallout 3 pros: V.A.T.S makes for some fun a cinematic times. The characters are more interesting and better developed. More original setting. Better graphics. Well developed karma system that makes it easier to choose a path. Good voiceactors.

Fallout 3 cons: There are VERY few sidequests for an rpg. The main quest can be completed in a couple of hours. Seems unfinished with many dead end quests and lots of places that with no questline attached to them. Stealth gameplay sucks. Very few enemies. Dialogue with npc's gives you alot of options but gets resolved to quickly and seems unfulfilling. You hit max level way to fast. Its piss easy even on very hard. Combat outside of V.A.T.S is clunky.

Oblivion pros. Bigger gameworld. TONNES of sidequests. Many different enemies. Loads of races and enemies.

Cons. Dialogue with npc's are mostly monologues. Characters facial animations looks off. It seems like they hired only 5 different voice actors (haven't played this game much but I'm so tired of that guy who sounds like John Malkovich). Ive experience low frame rates on my PS3 a few times.

For me oblivion is the better game. Fallout 3 just felt to small and restrictive to be really good. Sure, I was immersed in it for 40-50 hours and perhaps thats good enough. I would just expect much more from an rpg, and so far Oblivion doesn't seem like it's going to dissapoint in the same way.

I prefer the Oblivion setting, although Fallout 3 does have a lot more to offer...but i'll still stick with Oblivion.

Eh? Oblivion hardly ever crashes for me (except for the infamous exit crash, which doesn't really do much), and my computer isn't all that great.

Oblivion was just not that good of a game in my opinion
Fallout 3 was solid when they released it so I think it is awesome
(but this is coming from a person who love anything Post-apocalyptic.)

It's impossible to choose. Oblivion is so pretty and excellent but all the NPCs sound the same and it was very glitchy. Fallout 3 is awesome because of VATS and the story setting.

Fallout 3 definetely!

Its got a much better setting and a immersive world, with the apocolyptic twist which is loved by everyone.
