Right, seems there is a crapload of hate going around for Halo 3, and I'm trying to figure out why. I personally really like the Halo series, having bought and played all 3 of the games, and considered Halo 3 to be a very good game.

I bought it on the pretext that I wanted to discover how the story ended, that previous campaigns had been fun, and that multiplayer was a very nice added bonus. I personally found the ending was good, albeit not totally unexpected, the campaign was excellent, making great strides on from the original and Halo 2, and the multiplayer was addictive, but certainly not mind blowing.

However, it seems a lot of people playing in multiplayer matches haven't even started the campaign. This has led me to believe that a lot of people have bought it very much mainly for the multiplayer aspect, which was very much hyped pre-release, and have been disappointed because the multiplayer didn't live up to the hype.

So for those of you who can't be bothered to read all that, did you enjoy it and why did you but it?

Sigh* here's my ramblings.

1. I think halo three sucked, because Bungie kept saying they were making the fight fun by making it more intense by adding more combatants. What we got was a few banshees and hornets in the sky that few if any people notice, let alone contributing to the fight.

2. I never played Halo one, but I did try a demo on the computer, and I then I finally understood the love for halo. I liked how there were more enemy variations and the little cyber-eye cover thingy, it just added to the whole experience. Plus it had more intense fight then allow, because you had more then fucking two marines by your side and assaulting that alien camp set in a tropical setting charging with both sides blasting away was pretty awesome. Halo 3 had shitty fight with you against 20 brutes or when you did have allies it was cramped or they just got blasted away.

3. Leading to my third point, which is the weapons. They armed the brutes with fucking grenade launcher, anything above normal would have you blasted away even in cover. Just not awesome to the classic plasma fire flying all over the place.

4. My last point, only because I want to play CoD4. I think the multiplayer was shit compared to halo 2. The maps design for halo 2 are better then words can describe and halo 3's can stay the shit that it is. They spent to much time designing the maps to be "Forerunner" settings. Personally, I liked it at first, but EVERY singly one was like that and was pretty much design for free-for-all fights, not the hardcore multi-variant games that I loved on midship, and the other arena style maps that allowed for good team deathmatches or capture the flag or even oddball was fun. Also cool setting like inside buildings, alien ships(midship), and the kinda roman arena maps, basically well structured maps that wasn't all about background information, just fun to fight in. (Sorry I can't name them, but if you played halo 2 hardcore you should know what I mean) ;)

I only ever played Halo 1 + 2 Single player with a bit of split screen due to a lack of internets, I play halo 3 online all the time with my mates.

I personally love it but I never play it on my own as with most of my online games. I never really got in to Cod4 Multiplayer thought the single was awsome but the multiplayer just seemed so rubbish to me as in every game there would be some dude with all the perks and the best gun set to kill in one shot and he would camp. The perks and weapon unlocks always annoyed me to be honest. Mind you though the both fail compared to tf2.^^

I've gotten to the point where I roll my eyes every time I see Halo 3 even mentioned in these forums.

Anyways, my profile picture explains my thoughts on Halo...

I have played and loved all three Halo titles, including campaign and multiplayer. None of them are perfect, but at least their flaws were (and are) interesting.

I do wish folks wouldn't be so hasty in writing off the story, though. At first glance it is indeed trite and cliche... so folks not interested in the story need only spend minimal time with it before getting back to the action. Look deeper, though, and you'll find how deep the Halo backstory really is and see the underlying themes that aren't so trite.

This has led me to believe that a lot of people have bought it very much mainly for the multiplayer aspect, which was very much hyped pre-release, and have been disappointed because the multiplayer didn't live up to the hype.
1st sentence - consider the phrase "second accounter," someone who is under the mistaken belief that a fresh start in multiplayer will propel them quickly to level 50 and Generalship. There are A LOT of them. And them a few people bought Halo only for the multiplayer, they aren't really fans, they just think Bungie makes the best multiplayer.

2nd sentence - multiplayer is always hyped prerelease as many people consider it the backbone of every shooter and one that doesn't have it is not worth considering, and there's the desire to avoid spoiling the story. What I see is they took Halo 2's multiplayer awesome and improoved it without changing the overall "feel," exactly what I expected and hoped for. And really, does anything ever live up to the hype?

In my opinion the Halo series is among the best there is. Just look at the haters. Observe there vocality and near uniform arguments endlessly repeated. Most have no idea what Halo is like, they just assume and take the arguments of cynics and misanthrops like Yahtzee as their own. Most realize their lines are flawed and fall on largely deaf ears but they continue the assault, they don't want to be the only ones left outside the castle. Surely a game that inspires such desparation must be great.

Also, I've played it myself. That's all anyone needs to do, give Halo 3 a fair chance and you'll agree it's one of the best shooters there is.

So, no, Halo 3 is not pure fan service although there is more than a little bit of that in it.

My favorite moment working at gamestop last year was when a guy came in a week after launch, threw the game on the counter and said, "This game was shit it was exactly the same as Halo 2 except some different levels." So we traded his game in and politely sold him another game, then laughed our asses off when he left with the word "Duh" thrown in a lot. Of course its the same as Halo 2 with different levels. In case you missed it, this is Halo 3. Same franchise, same genre. No one ever bitched that GTA has had the same gameplay for years. And don't get me started on some of Nintendo's repetitive crap.

Halo 1 redefined FPSs for many people. And Halo 2 was so huge because it implemented online play. But once you get to that point there's not really anything else you can do to a series. Halo 3 was a fan's game that, unfortunately, had a lot of public hype that wasn't possible to live up to. Halo 2 was for awesome online play. Halo 3 was for finishing (sorta) the story and getting some shinier graphics. If you expect(ed) to get some entirely new experience, you were (will be) sorely mistaken.

P.S. CoD4 Multiplayer died for me the instant I saw a replay of a guy killing me with two shots to the leg while I was at full health.

It's not generic in the least. And the Flood trump headcrabs any day...
The Flood is definitely the most unique zombie thing I've ever seen. And it has the coolest name too.

Played all 3. I don't hate Halo 3, it's just that part 2 was better.

The single-player is better in 2. The plot doesn't feel disjointed, there is good pacing, and the Arbiter is a really interesting foil to Master Chief's character. In 3 he becomes a glorified cheerleader. Africa gets fire bombed and everyone just sorta shrugs it off. Cortana will not shut up until I finally go save her from that freaking ship.

On a side-note, the opening dialog where she explains why she selected Chief is one of the best I've ever seen in a game. But it's a cliff drop and down hill roll after that.

The multi-player is...this is getting subjective but I'm a grenade junkie. So you can gather how I feel about that.

They may not be unique but the flood were definitely terrifying. Especially in 1

EDIT: Terrifying is the wrong word, but I definitely wasnt expecting them.

Also, personally 2 was more disappointing than 3 to me because I was really looking forward to the battle being on Earth in 2 like Bungie said they were doing. Then I play the game to find out Earth makes up 2 levels and we're back to another Halo...awesome.

Christ, what is this, the summer of console wars and Halo threads or something?

Ya know what? Screw it. It's obvious none of you have heard of the search button, and it doesn't look like you're going to open your eyes any time soon. So from now on I'm just going to hit report and pray to as many gods as I can that the creators of all these threads get bot flies.

Half-Life > Halo.

Halo is crap, go play System Shock 2 or Deus Ex to know what a good FPS is. Shity story, shitty gameplay and it is the reason most modern FPS's suck complete dick.
