Personally, this may be because I don't have any pets of my own but I wouldn't have any problems with eating a cat or a dog more than I would with say a sheep or a pig. While the UK I've never seen anywhere that serves either if I ever go to China and get the opportunity to try some I probably will. However, I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks as I know a lot of people get really emotional about pets and wouldn't want to see a distant cousin of their beloved Mr. Cuddles in a burger, which I can kinda understand.

So Escapists, what are your opinions?

It's against my religion, it probably has awful taste and why the fuck would you want to eat a dog or a cat.

it's gross, but not morally wrong. however, you do realize you're opening a can of worms about the morality of eating meat in general, right?

Morally wrong?

It depends on where you live.

Here in the UK, dogs are helpers and companions.

I wouldn't eat one of my friends, so I think it's wrong to eat a dog.

Not that I judge people who do in other countries. I also don't like the idea of eating a sheep's eyeballs, but hey, that's a delicacy in some places.

Is it MORALLY wrong? No.

Biologically, though, it's a bad idea. You generally shouldn't eat carnivores - they're likely to cause infection. Even omnivores are a little iffy, hence why you have to cook chickens and pigs longer than you do beef.

Not any more wrong to eat a cow or a pig. I just don't eat them because I much rather have them as pets.

it's a completely cultural thing, some people keep pigs as pets because they are smart and affectionate like dogs, but because they've gotten such bad press over the years no one cares about eating them in America. if you took pictures of the conditions of pigs being prepped for slaughter and photoshopped dogs in there, people would be burned at the stake. but we don't care because pigs are dirty and dogs are our friends.

not that i'm a vegetarian. fuck pigs.

No more morally wrong than eating other animals.

Not saying I'd want to since I have so many pets, but it's true.

Morally wrong? no. But they taste terrible.

I don't like the idea of people eating my furry friends, but I don't object to it either. Heck, I eat cow and some people consider them divine.

As long as its not harmful to them, who am I to judge what people eat?

Neither are morally wrong, mostly because morals differ from person to person and also they are still animals. Yes it's been stated earlier the problem with eating carnivores, but you still can

Keep in mind that the cultures that eat dogs don't raise them like pets and then eat them, they raise them like livestock.
In that mindset, I think there's nothing actually morally wrong with that.

I personally wouldn't eat them because of my cultural values burned firmly in my mainframe, but it's no more wrong than eating a pig.

Classifying certain animals as taboo is generally just culture. I've eaten dog before. It was there, it was offered, I was polite, and it wasn't actually too bad. Where I was dogs weren't for anything other than work or food and weren't generally considered pets at all. They certainly weren't considered a part of the family like most dogs in Canada or the U.S. are. Anyway now that I'm back in Canada would I kill and eat the beloved family pet? Absolutely not, but I wouldn't go around claiming that not eating dogs is morally superior either.

I'm kind of surprised that I am not in the minority here.

No, it is not morally wrong to eat cats or dogs. However, I wouldn't do it unless we were talking about a survival issue, and in that case, eating humans isn't even off the table (think plane crash in the mountains). Keep in mind, that I would have serious issues with eating a cat or dog (or human, since I brought it up) even if it was my only option for survival.

But that's just my opinion.

This. I love my cats, and would never take them to a slaughterhouse. But if I went to a country were they were raised for food as livestock? I'd be ordering a plate just so I could say I'd done it. Same thing with dogs, except I don't own a dog; also, one of the things on my bucket list is to go to Peru and eat a guinea pig. Yes, I'm weird.

I'm a cat lover, and don't hate dogs, but no.. its not. Some cultures view cattle as sacred, but that doesn't stop us eating them.
