I've been having this argument with my friend over whether or not Afro Samurai (the show and films) is classified as an anime.

so in your opinion, is it or isn't it?

Yes it is. Anime is japanese animation. The creator of Afro Samurai is Japanese. The style is that of anime. However it is largely influenced by Western stuff like Hip-hop, but it is still anime.

At least thats what I think.

I'm honestly curious as to the argument that you (or your friend) used to say that Afro Samurai is not anime.

For me, there are two schools of thought on what dictates weather or not something is anime. Either A they believe it has to do with the country of origin of the work, or B they feel it's a stylistic choice these days. Afro Samurai fulfills both of these qualifications.

Yes.
Its Anime.

The Anime/Manga is HEAVILY influenced by Western Media and Styles, but its still an Anime/Manga.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is the same way.
Just look up the names of a lot of the Characters and the Stands.

i personally think it is an anime. he refuses to believe me because he thinks it's too "american" to be an anime. it's funny how he makes such opinions without seeing it

Yeah, then he doesn't really have much of a leg to stand on with this one! Pretty sure it's going to be unanimous here that he's wrong.

I think we have a winner. There are two competing camps on the definition of anime. In the most populus camp, the criteria are that the animated work originate in Japan. In a more general (and less accepted) definition, anime can be defined as a style. As an example of something that generally meets the qualifications of the latter but not the former, look no further than Avatar: The Last Airbender.

So it is so far unanimous then. Sounds likea rubbish argument. What the hell kind of case are they making to say it isn't anime?
