I can cycle without my hands on the handlebars I can even steer it around some corners. Of course I know it is somewhat dangerous and I use both hands if I am overtaking someone, cycling next to someone else or when I pass oncoming traffic.

You might ask: But Rabbitboy why do you do it if you know it is dangerous?

Well I find it somewhat relaxing and like I mentioned I don't do it if I will take other people with me in my fall (I have never fallen of my bike when I didn't have hands on the handlebars).

So can you cycle without your hands on the handlebars? Or do you think I am a crazy maniac who should be taken of the road?

Can I? Yes. But I don't do it that often, as my current bike has a bit of a list to the right, so if I do it a low speeds I fall over. Still, I sometimes do it to zip up my coat or something like that.

Dangerous? Meh, I live in the Netherlands, cyclist heaven on earth.

Also: 5000 posts, yay!

I sometimes cycle with one hand while I've got the other on my MP5K, just like in Die Hard:

And I never hit shit. Just like in Die Hard!

Sometimes, I try it with my knees if I want to rest my arms, but I only screw about on my bike if it's on a long, flat and empty stretch of [soft] road.

I can't cycle no more.... damn dodgy knee.

But I fell into the sometimes category, there's nothing like a country road, in the middle of nowhere with no traffic. Take your hands of the bar and feel the air brush past your finger tips...

That was as poetic as I'll ever get!

I can do it if I want to rest my hands but I never do it for extended periods of time, usually just a few seconds so I can shake my arms and get some blood flowing. I don't like not having my hands on the handlebars because I don't like the feeling that I lack control. Also, considering I mostly mountain bike it's way too dangerous not to have your hands on the handlebars, for breaking and whatnot.

This reminds me of an old joke.

There was a little girl once, and she went out with her bike around the building she lived in, while her mother watched carefully from the balcony.

First time around the building, the little girl said to her mother: "Look mom, one hand!"

Second time around the building, the little girl said: "Look mom, no hands!"

Third time around the building, the little girl said: "Look mom, no teeth!"

God I loved that one as a kid.

Tl;dr no. It's a bad idea not to keep your hands on the handlebars.

While I was still in school I usually rode the whole 5km home while reading a book..
I could/can also stand on top of the seat or ..frame?

Now, I live out in the country so there are basically no cars.

And I don't use a helmet!! (nottobetakenasadvice, pleaseuseahelmetwhilecycling)
