Sure ads will generate more revenue, but at what cost?
I am sure there are a lot of people that don't even see the ad thanks to a healthy dose of browser plugins and addons.

I think what they should have done from the start is reach out to the community that have and tried to do a little fund raising. I am sure if at the time people knew the site was going to go down the shitter people would have dropped even $5, or whatever currency people use. I don't know if it is too late for that with the recent situation with EC, but only time will tell.

Alienating your audience with ads only makes them stop coming except on days when the content they want to watch is release. You want to make a site where people come to hang out and refresh their pages. Not pester them with ads, pop-ups and huge banners. I don't mind adverts in the side bar or top of my browser window, they are generally non intrusive and easily ignored. It's they ones they got "HEY I'M A GATEWAY AD", those piss me off to no end.

I have never been bothered by ads. They pay the bills, while i get free access (And I get free info on products I may or may not buy)

Ads suck, but if it would help the Escapist pay their employees on time (or within a reasonable timeframe), I guess that's ok.

I don't think they'd make enough off more ads to pay for all their staff though

They crossed the line once when they made me put in a captcha that was an advertisement...and the text was clear and easy to read...thus defeating the entire purpose of a captcha.

They crossed it again when they wanted a cut of donation money. I'm very close to finding a new site to frequent and bigger, more annoying ads are going to help cement my decision, should they implement them.

I think that instead of adding more ads, they should focus on making more appropriate ads, they got the localised ads down, I got ads in finnish, the problem? The ad that was shown to me was some ladyshave ad. More clicks & products bought instead of just wiews means that the ads work, if they work well, they can charge more for ad spots, this is a videogame related site. Any guesses how many users want or need ladyshave?

What I'm curious about is, when you came up with this idea OP, why wasn't your first thought the following?
"This is a business that's been doing ... business for years. If they are in financial trouble, the first idea that pops into my head would not be something they would find hard to come up with. If they don't have more ads, I doubt it's because they were waiting for ME to put the idea in their heads".

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but I probably am so I apologise. I'm just always curious why some people think they can solve other people's problems with the first idea that pops in their head, especially when the involved party is experienced in the sort of problem in question.

Also, the new pop-up ads are bloody annoying!
It wasn't as much of a "I'm such a genius that people will bow before my amazing idea" thread as a gouge on people's affinity for ads. Obviously, the site's creators understand how ad revenue works (a lot better than I do); I just wanted to bring the possibility of more ads out in the open and see what people thought about it. Hence the question mark after "problem solved".

Also, I don't mean to sound like a dick, but you kind of sounded like a dick. I forgive you. [small]Now I sound like a dick...[/small] Could you ever forgive me? (hoping for a recursive pattern here :)

Not to be a jerk, but you dont seem to be in the Pub Club, so you're not really giving them the "business" they need.

OT: I dont tink I would mind more ads. as it is now, I just put on the mute, and wait till its over, but hey, it still gives the escapist money cause technically I watched it. I just dont want a five/six min vid to stop in th emiddle, play an ad, and then have to start up and load again like some sites (with albeit longer vids) do.

I think this has already been said, but there are just too many contributors. I just checked how many shows/comics were featured on the right side, I counted 16. I don't know if this is the popular opinion, but I only watch 2-3 a week. That's not even mentioning those who are not featured, such as that First Person Marketer guy.

I'm not saying any of these shows are bad, but the Escapist shouldn't be using them if they can't afford them.

Here's an idea, switch some of your shows to blip tv. The person making the video will receive the money for their videos through blip, and the Escapist will receive money from the advertisements on the page.

As for more advertisements, I don't think they can use more advertising. Assuming they use Google for their ads, there's a limited amount of ads you can place on a web page. They can't just put 30 ads on a page and receive revenue for all of that.

I'll take ads, just stop putting in the ones I CAN'T GET RID OF AT THE START OF EVERY DAMNED VIDEO!

NO I won't go buy season 5 of your show I never heard of (your commercials are boring btw) and I DON'T want to buy El Shaddai! Just give me an option to click it away! (and YES I have adblock!)

Having more adverts on the website will simply encourage more people to get browser plug-ins to avoid them.

Either that, or people will simply stop coming here because of all the adverts.

I think the dicknesses could cancel out, in time.
I guess sparking a conversation about whether people would accept more ads or not is worthy and if you say that's the intention of this thread then good on ya. However, I honestly did misunderstand your thread title and first post as "I have the solution!"

The poll results alone are interesting to look at.

If it gets ridiculously bad I'll leave the site. I used to have various warning from Avast in regards to Gaikai ads and stuff. It's probably a false positive but that was annoying in itself.
