Sure ads will generate more revenue, but at what cost?
I am sure there are a lot of people that don't even see the ad thanks to a healthy dose of browser plugins and addons.
I think what they should have done from the start is reach out to the community that have and tried to do a little fund raising. I am sure if at the time people knew the site was going to go down the shitter people would have dropped even $5, or whatever currency people use. I don't know if it is too late for that with the recent situation with EC, but only time will tell.
Alienating your audience with ads only makes them stop coming except on days when the content they want to watch is release. You want to make a site where people come to hang out and refresh their pages. Not pester them with ads, pop-ups and huge banners. I don't mind adverts in the side bar or top of my browser window, they are generally non intrusive and easily ignored. It's they ones they got "HEY I'M A GATEWAY AD", those piss me off to no end.
