Definitely Mass Effect 2, as long as you get the first one.

It's pretty cheap now, and still has a great story, so it's definitely worth your time. The sequel is even better.

The other games don't really compare...

Enjoyed the demo but I'm worried I might be missing out on the story if I don't play the first one (which I hear isn't as good as 2.I do know all the plot of the first though.)
Mass effect 2 works a stand alone game, you don't need 1. Having said that, ME 1 can be had for a couple of bucks now, get it second hand and play it through as playing through ME 1 has a number of effects on your play of ME 2, some big differences others not so much. It'll also encourage you to explore the world more deeply, which is worth the effort.

PS, Mass Effect 2 is my favourite game this year, it's brilliant. Mass Effect 1 is fantastic as well, I prefer the combat in 1 but that's just me.

None of the above. Buy Mass Effect 1. It's probably pretty cheap by now. Seriously, it's a great game. You shouldn't have spoiled the plot for yourself before playing it.
ahah Everywhere I looked, ME was more expensive than ME2. o_O
Really? That's kind of bizarre. How much has each game cost? They should at least both be 60 bucks.

what you'd be missing in ME2 if you hadn't played ME1 is a few references to ME1. Which won't matter to you, having not played ME1. So got Mass Effect 2, because it is an incredible game graphically, gameplay wise and story wise.

Which of these would I be better off getting (if any?)

The next big DLC item is the interactive comic that's shipping with PS3 units: The comic basically gives you a chance to see the events of the game and make your own decisions, instead of just relying on the default setting.

It's also useful to gain some perspective, since ME1 is much broader in scope than ME2, while ME2 essentially just ties up loose ends in ME1 and sets the stage for ME2.

On the other hand, probably the majority of the actual content that transfers over from ME1 to ME2 is self-referential, like Conrad Verner:

This is an example of an interaction/mission that will only occur if you did the precursor mission in ME1.

ME1 is good... if you like RPGs. If you're primarily a shooter fan, then you'll find ME2 better. I enjoy both games equally, personally. But I'm also a die hard fan of the series.

You buy the DLC through here [http://social.bioware.com/page/me2-dlc]. Then you download it from them and install it. No steam involved.

Good god, anything but Front Mission. Maybe My Little Pony: Pony love would be a better choice?

This person is very authoritative. You should listen to him.
Alright, IMO and all that :p.

I really haven't heard of the others though.
I wasn't being facetious.
OK then.

What do you want?
I was playfully agreeing with you.
Reason no. 93 why the internet is annoying. :p It's so hard to distinguish people's intent unless they state it in plain words.

Sorry for all the confusion mate.
It's cool.
