Poll: New Decade Games To Be A Disappointment?

The past decade brought us some great games, there is no single doubt about that. But, a decade is 10 years and 10 years is plenty of time to make a great game. So we should have no doubt that the new decade will bring us a bounty of some of the greatest games we'll ever see, with ever growing technological improvements and more and more money being invested into the gaming market then we should have games that we'll never forget in the next 2 decades, right?

Look at it this way, what truly amazing games have you played so far through this decade? I can't think of one game that I'll never forget. I mean, sure there are games I love playing and would play over and over again, but I'm not going to remember them decades from now. Pacman, would be a great game to use as an example right now, it's been around 30 years and it's still being honoured by Google making millions* of people play it. Will this decade bring us a game that will be remembered for as long as Pacman has been remembered for?

Okay, so maybe Pacman wasn't the best example to use, while it was and still is regarded as being one of the best games ever, that's probably because it was a revolutionary title that everyone enjoyed. So, let's bring this article to a more up-to-date stand point. Last decade. If I had to pick one game to declare revolutionary it would be Grand Theft Auto 3. While this series was already started, this is where things really kicked off for Rockstar games. The game brought the full 3D sandbox mode to what it is today and allowed free roaming with missions being brought up whenever the player felt like it. The game had a decent plot and was filled with twists and turns to keep the player enticed enough to not just stop playing upon entering the last island (which I have to say was a bitter disappointment for all that work, but I digress). This game sparked off Rockstar's infamous Grand Theft Auto series success and led them to make the recently released Red Dead Redemption, which I look forward to playing if I ever get it.

Now, it's safe to say that RDR is a great game, from all I have read and heard, it definitely sounds it. But is it going to be worthy of the label of being greatest game of the decade, no, I have series doubts it will. The game sounds too much the same as to all the other sandbox games and too much like the Grand Theft Auto series in plot. There's a man out for revenge and is filled with remorse. This seems like a consistent flaw in the 'new' games; each and every one of them follows maddens law. For those of you who don't know, madden's law is where a game is essentially remade and then tweaked with little additions and changes so that it's different enough to be considered different by the market.

To stay on point but to leave Rockstar alone for a bit, I'll present my point from a different angle. Any of you looking forward to Obsidians Fallout New Vegas?...

I'm basing this on games released leaving the decade, games entering the decade and games that are going to be released. I'm looking forward to see how it all pans out, it'll be a good insight into how games are developing, but how much better can the graphics get, how many more can they add into the series without going overboard? The call of duty series is onto it's seventh game. GTA is onto it's seventh as well (if I'm not mistaken, I may well be). Halo is heading into that sort of area of numbers too. God of war is hitting it's third isn't it? and sadly shadow of the colossus was a game that I always wanted but never got, it was a shame. But as someone that wants to go into game development, I need to wonder whats wrong with games and how they can be made better. One thing that niggles at the games is the plot, they all seem to be kill, run, kill, run, capture a flag, steal a car, kill, run. it's all the same and I think we need something that can change that sort of cycle. I heard Alan Wake is good with it's plot, I'll have to try that out along with RDR.

Portal certainly got some high praise. Little Big Planet is full of phenomenal potential and creativity. The Uncharted wow'd me by upping the high interactive action possible with games. inFAMOUS showed that a game's story can capture you and tug your heart strings and feel deep and meaningful. The iteration swearing coming into game really pumps up the reality factors and puts us in more believable worlds than ever before.

The only problem with little big planet is that it's horizons stop at sony consoles. if they released it for other consoles then it would be even bigger and even better. Little big planet has the potential to be one of the biggest and best games to be seen by our eyes if only it would allow other console based gamers to welcome it. And portal... aaaaaah how I fell in love with portal. The sheer simplicity of that game combined with an amazing storyline made it sing in my mind whenever i closed my eyes, and I really do mean sing. The computers voice was the voice I thought in for a week after finishing it was that good. Those games are the games I want to see more of. Not those specific games, while I loved portal, I'd hate to see them make it into a series and try to 'improve' it. The game is as good as it is going to get and I hope that it stays the way it is.

had it released on more consoles doesnt mean it would be better. plus had they did that they would have had to cut out content that is in the game.

I'll never forget a lot of games of last decade
KoToR
Halo
Bioshock
Shadow of The colossus
Portal

Really going into a new decade with a mindset like that will almost certainly make you right.
You get what you're willing to put in, if you're thinking like that already I doubt you'll change your mind.

but if it was released on more consoles more people would be aware of how truly amazing the game is. The majority of people I know own XBOX consoles and are unaware of little big planet. And if it was released on more consoles it would have made a higher profit also by making more people aware of the game more people will remember it.

You gotta remember Shadow of Colossus!
I do remember it as a game that I wanted dearly, but is it a game that everyone knows about and thinks revolutionized gaming? The last decade did release mind boggling games that made gaming what we know and love today, but what I want to know is whether you think that the present decade will bring games like these. I think it will, whether the article I wrote portrays that or not, but I think that there won't be as many memorable games as the last.

No. Since everyone is currently pissing time/money away with motion controls rather than implementing/developing methods to actually increase the amount of influence a player has on a game (strange how similar these sound on papar), we're in for rather lame decade.
Exactly, in my opinion the Wii is a lost cause to gamers, it's a family console and that's all it should ever be. The motion controls are pointless and as Yahtzee quite often makes clear are piss in comparison to a joystick. More time needs to be spent on making games better, and making them memorable games that will maximise profit and enjoyment.

If we enter the decade questioning how good games are and attempting to make them better as well as sell more then gaming can only get better. The true greats, the heroic games, that pioneered gaming are what we need. The rest will follow suit time and time again. That's what games are starting to do; they're entering a loop in which they can't get out of. The developers add a few things here and there to make the game better but they don't change anything out of fear of it losing profit.

well people will still remember it anyway, since it did get GOTY 2008 from alot of sites even the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. also to the extent of a sequel being released this year.

The problem I think is that the last couple of decades were the first in gaming as we see it. It was experimental, like early films. But just like films have been for a while now people know what works and whats popular and as such are not willing to risk their money when they can just make another generic, waste of time FPS and make a little profit instead of trying for an epic that will set their name in eternity. Still not to say its a lost cause, dont be silly, ironically im looking most forward to TIMESPLITTERS 4!!!!!! Please let it stick, PLEASE!!! And you can call me generic for ripping on FPS's but ill stop when they stop being shit.

you've pretty much summed up what I'm trying to get at with this. It's pretty much all about making a safe investment now where they sling a man in the midst of a thousand enemies and make you fight your way out then they tie up the game with a pretty bow and ship it out. The games are starting to become to similar to one another and a very predominant aspect of this is some cold war parallel where they tell it as if the Soviets did attack America. That idea is running dry and the world war 2 tap will be turned on again sometime soon. If you're going to make an FPS set it in world war 1, toy soldiers was a relatively successful game that I enjoyed playing but got bored of because, and let me make this clear by capitalizing it, THE LEVELS WERE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME. yes that's right, I'm a one string banjo, everything's the same blah blah blah well I only pluck it because it's right. when developers make a risk and stop just making a generic game I'll stop complaining about it.

This thread has solidified my decision to go into game development, not that it needed any more solidified, it's basically just poured molten iron on top of concrete and waiting for it to dry. The games will get better eventually but the way they're going now there's nothing revolutionary happening any time soon as it appears. all the games I've seen mentioned as to looking forward for are SEQUELS. therefore they'll be the same with a few little bits added on to make them look different.

making a revolutionary game might take a long time and a lot of hard work and overtime but the second I hit actually designing a game I know I'll be putting my all into making the game more than just a generic game in a box.

Grand Theft Auto 3? Do people still remember that game even now?
If I could name some of histories true greats it would be a mix up of the obvious candidates; Pacman, Mortal Combat, Sonic, Mario- you know the drill, the classics by all standards.
More modern games though? Sadly Halo will be remembered for a good long time, mostly due to what it's done to the gaming community (FPS's seem to be 90% of all games developed, and of course the birth of console oriented online multiplayer).
Also take into consideration games such as Half Life, System Shock, Silent Hill, Pokemon...
These will be remembered for good. How many in the last 10 years you ask? Uhm...not many. At all, really.

I realise this is probably due to the fact that visually impressive games can be produced faster than ever, sold quicker than ever, and are replaced even faster than that. It's becoming a heavily brand related industry and the products don't have much of a shelf life anymore. Just bought Final Fantasy XIII? Yeah well now another version is coming out so you better buy that too. Not that it's all bad; I love Phoenix Wright for example and I just beat Apollo Justice, but already I have TWO other PW games to play! So I'm glad for that at least, but a new one will probably be out in a few months.

Gaming is becoming slap-dash, and people realise the products aren't important enough to take much real consideration into any more. Halo Reach? It'll just be more of the last game, but probably shorter. Same with the next Resident Evil, or GTA.
Will a great game be made in the next ten years? Probably, no. Not by a major studio anyway, which is why I tend to buy the lesser heard-of games, or even indie developed.
Why am I talking so much?

Guy do what you must. Im trying to become a manga artist in a world where cartoons are seen as child fodder that must be hacked to pieaces before they can be considered safe anoth to present. I mean no wounder kids are so violent these days, THERES NOTHING GOOD TO WATCH. I grew up in the 90's and if theres one good thing to say about the 90's (and this seems the case) the TV, especially the cartoons, were amazing. Cartoon Network, Nickalodeon, Fox Kids, even Disney was a 1000 times better. Inuendoes (hope thats how its spelt) up the wazzooo. Thats why I like anime, its just more liberated. Not to say its all good, alot of it has become cliche. Which is a shame "We have more freedom to do these things then others BUT FUCK THAT, lets make a Dragon Ball clone."

Conversely, if you view entertainment as a business, quality just becomes a threat to the sales of your next game.
Its both that and an art form, is it to much to ask that they consider both when making a game, surly with all that money and all those talented people they can, HELL they have dudes who can hit a meteorite flying through space at a million miles per hour with a rocket TV for a few million, snag one of those dudes.
