The past decade brought us some great games, there is no single doubt about that. But, a decade is 10 years and 10 years is plenty of time to make a great game. So we should have no doubt that the new decade will bring us a bounty of some of the greatest games we'll ever see, with ever growing technological improvements and more and more money being invested into the gaming market then we should have games that we'll never forget in the next 2 decades, right?
Look at it this way, what truly amazing games have you played so far through this decade? I can't think of one game that I'll never forget. I mean, sure there are games I love playing and would play over and over again, but I'm not going to remember them decades from now. Pacman, would be a great game to use as an example right now, it's been around 30 years and it's still being honoured by Google making millions* of people play it. Will this decade bring us a game that will be remembered for as long as Pacman has been remembered for?
Okay, so maybe Pacman wasn't the best example to use, while it was and still is regarded as being one of the best games ever, that's probably because it was a revolutionary title that everyone enjoyed. So, let's bring this article to a more up-to-date stand point. Last decade. If I had to pick one game to declare revolutionary it would be Grand Theft Auto 3. While this series was already started, this is where things really kicked off for Rockstar games. The game brought the full 3D sandbox mode to what it is today and allowed free roaming with missions being brought up whenever the player felt like it. The game had a decent plot and was filled with twists and turns to keep the player enticed enough to not just stop playing upon entering the last island (which I have to say was a bitter disappointment for all that work, but I digress). This game sparked off Rockstar's infamous Grand Theft Auto series success and led them to make the recently released Red Dead Redemption, which I look forward to playing if I ever get it.
Now, it's safe to say that RDR is a great game, from all I have read and heard, it definitely sounds it. But is it going to be worthy of the label of being greatest game of the decade, no, I have series doubts it will. The game sounds too much the same as to all the other sandbox games and too much like the Grand Theft Auto series in plot. There's a man out for revenge and is filled with remorse. This seems like a consistent flaw in the 'new' games; each and every one of them follows maddens law. For those of you who don't know, madden's law is where a game is essentially remade and then tweaked with little additions and changes so that it's different enough to be considered different by the market.
To stay on point but to leave Rockstar alone for a bit, I'll present my point from a different angle. Any of you looking forward to Obsidians Fallout New Vegas?...
