No, this has nothing to do with that other thread. I'm honestly surprised this question hasn't been asked before...unless it has, and my search-fu is simply weak, but the question's probably self-explanatory. If you've played any of the old Genesis/Megadrive era Sonic games, which is your favorite?

Note that I'd prefer the 3D games (hereafter defined as "Sonic Adventure and later") be left out of the discussion. Not due to quality judgment, since I hold some heterodox opinions on the whole matter, but simply because they're momentarily irrelevant and draw flames like a oil driller's pet charmander. This edict will be enforced with my words and the power of wishful thinking.

I'm not voting myself, since I have a bit of an ulterior motive. Specifically, to see if anyone recommends the games of the era that I missed...

I liked the original sonic 1, good game and was very original.

It was the first that i played so its nostalgia factor is way high making it a better game

Thanks to my experience playing Sonic Mega Collection, I can no longer accurately answer that question. However, pre-SMC, I would have picked Sonic 1. While it was insanely hard (at least, when I first beat it), I had a great time playing it. I remember the fact that you didn't have that brief "moment of invincibility" if you lost your rings on the spikes (You can probably guess why I remember it.)

so... Hmmm... probably 2, because it has Tails in it.

Definitely Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It was the Mega Drive's Super Mario World. It felt like the ultimate Sonic game.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2. For me, it had the best soundtrack, level design, and overall gameplay of any Sonic game I've played. Not even Sonic CD (which is very overrated, imo) could come close to it's brilliance.

Sonic 1 had the better gameplay and level design...

But Sonic 2 had great visuals and soundtrack, also the spindash was great even though the level design was the shallowest.

My choice is Sonic 2 but I still need to play Sonic CD.

Sonic 2, mostly because it was the first to feature Tails. And since I liked Tails better than Sonic, it makes sense I like this one the most. The platforming's pretty much the same as Sonic 1, just with updated graphics.

Sonic 2 will always be my favorite. Sonic 1 was alright, but without the Spin Dash and the characteristic speed that it brought, there weren't many moments where it didn't feel like any other platformer from it's day. Sonic 3 was pretty fun too, but to me, it just felt too "busy". Too many power-ups, needlessly complex bonus stages, the whole lock-on cartridge thing... I just couldn't get into it.

Sonic 2 had the best parts of 1 and 3. It was very fast, the power-ups were few but satisfying, and the levels had enough secrets to keep the determined player interested.

I still play Sonic CD from time to time. The soundtrack on the U.S. version is fantastic! The gameplay isn't bad either. :)

Any one where Dr Robotnik is still called Dr Robotnik. :p.

I probably played Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) the most due to it being the most "backwards compatible" out of all the games, but Sonic 2 just clinches it for me.

Some brilliant zones (Chemical Plant, Metropolis Zone and Casino Night to name a few) and we always had a lot of fun running little tournaments with the 2 player mode.

I still think the music from Sonic 2's Death Egg stage was quite creepy.

The 1st one. Mainly because it's the only one I ever played. Seeing as my first console was the N64, it's lucky I played any at all.

Sweet!

Okay, since it got at least one vote, I now have to track down Sonic CD on a ROM or something. Same with Knuckles Chaotix, since at least one person mentioned it...
