I've played on console for a long time, but now i have a gaming-capable PC! Woooo. So I do a bit of both, I bought a few racing games and 3PS's on steam back in the summer sale and came to a terrifying halt. How in the heck do you play these games on a mouse and keyboard? HOW? Do PC Gamers ever play these games on a mouse and keyboard? I have no problem with plenty of games using M+K, but for games I've played on consoles that I'm now playing PC... just how?!

So yeah, I bought an Xbox Controller for my computer for these games and already have Xpadder loaded up for old games without Gamepad support. So the question is, if you play 3rd Person Shooters or Racing Games, which control method do you prefer?

Well third person shooters are in no way different to control then FPS.
But yes with racing games it gets iffy, if the game is made for keyboard(gradual gas/steer/break) then it works decently for the most part and you obviously don't get analog precision, but at the same time most racing games need almost no precision.

The only TPS I've ever played with a controller on PC was Spec Ops: The Line. That was because the mouse controls were almost unbearable. But, every single racing and platforming game I play with a controller, it just feels better and I prefer it. I think the only non TPS, Platformer or racer I've played with a controller is Dark Souls. You'll probably know why.

TPS should be fine with a mouse and keyboard, I don't think i've met one yet that wasn't a breeze to control. Car racing, on the other hand, is much better with a controller. I used to be able to play old Colin McRae Rally games using a keyboard, but wouldn't bother attempting something like GRID with a keyboard.

Pretty much most 3rd person shooters that don't require the finest of the finest aim I use my 360 controller with. Either they already have auto-aim like Saints Row, or I want to hinder myself, like in Dead Space (plus that game is even worse to control and aim with mouse+keyboard).
Also I do my racing with the 360 controller, plus chopper/jet flight in ArmA 2. Haven't got the controller to work tight yet with Freespace 2, so that's one game I've always been playing with mouse and keyboard.

I don't get why so many people have problems playing 3rd person shooters with mouse & kb,
like mr.k said,it's no different from fps

I could play sleeping dogs, spec ops the line, just cause 2,gta,just fine with my kb & mouse.

I don't play much racing games except maybe blur, and it was still playable with keyboard

Exactly what Vault said.

I love 3rd PS's like Alan Wake, and the Max Payne games. As well as games like GTA (and its various clones).
Driving with only a mouse and keyboard can be a little weird, but it's never been much of a problem for me.

Flying or controlling any sort of aircraft, that's what I often have trouble with, when using only M + KB.
I grew up on mouse and keyboard controls, so using only my thumbs/index finger feels weird.

TPS and racers are ok using keyboard as long as they don't bind multiple actions to a single key or use the mouse to steer.

I usually whip-out my pad only in occasion I'm playing hack'n'slash-games like Darksiders or Arkhams, mostly because their need precision gaming is neglible... In my opinion, pad has no role in shooters.

I don't get why it's considered better to use controllers on TPS's. The only game I know of with awful PC controls is Gears of war (And that's more due to it being a shitty port).

How is M+KB in any way unsuitable for third person shooters? In fact, just like with FPS games, a mouse and keyboard is easily superior to gamepads. If it isn't a shitty port with terrible mouse acceleration issues, that is. Unless you're talking about third person action games, like Darksiders. A gamepad is better for that.
No sane person would play a racer with a mouse and keyboard if they had a choice though.

I've not had any problems playing TPSs with a mouse and keyboard. It feels fine. I don't play racing games, but I can see how a pad or a steering wheel would be better. For flight games I use a joystick, but I'm not going to shell out for a steering wheel too.

I've never actually used a joypad with my PC. Though I have an old Sixaxis controller I could use with a bit of tinkering.

Racing games mostly just have a sensitivity issue for me. Its usually press a button and do a 180 in a couple of seconds, and that's what annoys me. Granted KB+M isn't the best for them.

Third person shooters, however, I have to ask how you play on a console. Without cheats like auto-aim that is. The mouse is far more accurate than a joystick or thumbstick or W/E, and W, A, S, D works for all your movement needs. Add to that the fact that you're generally in cover most of the time during such games, and I've got no clue what your problem there is.

tps - mouse+keys

racers - controllers preferably, keyboards are fine as well though. In this case it's basically a matter of ergonomics.

For third person, definitely still use mouse and keyboard, I've been doing it long enough that even most games which are ports now I can still make it work with a M+K. However, fighting games like Devil May Cry and such I would prefer a gamepad. Even games like Skyrim, where the combat controls are not that combo/counter/dodge oriented, I'd still use M+K.

For driving games, I don't mind M+K if it's kind of arcadey, like the old NFS series (I broke some crazy Leaderboard records on Carbon using M+K for canyon drifting). But if I play a serious driving sim, like Gran Turismo, Live for Speed, Forza or F1, then I'd definitely use a wheel. I play most of those on console though so I tend to go a bit further, building a whole racing chassis so I can actually get into a driving position. I'm a bit fanatic like that, I think I've been through at least 4 different chassis designs until I ended up on my current one.
