I prefer both if at all possible. Having your friend on a team to cooperatively bring down the throngs of online gaming can be a blast. If only one, definitely splitscreen. If you can't laugh at the stupidity of much of online gaming's population with a buddy, you just get saddened by it.

With a friend every time. Don't really like playing online, since my internet is...how to put? It's very Australian. Besides, you don't get to chuck cans at people online, but you can do that in real life.

No online game will ever be the same as split screen. Even when we play online with my friends, we get bored. It's just not the same when everyone is in the same room.

Playing on-line with friends is win.

I love meeting and becoming friends with random people on-line though too (mainly RDR it seems) who I then play games with at later dates, I dislike having random people in my PSN or live list whom I don't talk to or play with.

ETA: I should add I'm not one for split screening with a buddy anymore, back in the PSone/2 days I was, but I hate sharing my PS3 lol. I don't mind on the Wii though, where you have 2+ players but you're not split screening.

The only online game I play is EVE. Tried L4D online once, but most of the players I've played with are egocentric morons which of some sound like they just developed vocal cords they proudly belch their profanities with. Give me split-sceen with my buddies anyday!

Playing local multiplayer with mates is my highlight of gaming. Failing that, online play with the very same friends.

Splitscreen, for the most part. Nothing beats a 4 player game or smash bros or mario kart. Tf2 is a bucket of fun online though.
