I searched the Forums for this topic, and it doesn't seem to exist. So here it is as I break my 3+ years streak of not having to create a topic.
That's a prop to this site boy the way,Congratulations on another win.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the post:

I totally think that not only is R2D2 (I guess he is a male because they call him "he") the most powerful in the "universe" and in the Force, but I also believe that he is the Star of the whole shebang, and Luca's personal favorite to boot.

I'll post my reasons for thinking this way after you all get the ball rolling.I'm not a Star Wars fanatic, but I've been a fan for over 30 years, and I have thought this way since I was just a little kid.I feel that episode III clearly showed and endorsed my opinions, but it was clear all along that he was the king of the jungle.

Keep in mind that I'm only looking at the what the Films showed to base my judgement upon. But feel free to throw in characters that weren't in the films if you want, even that goofy Rabbit from the comic books. But if you would, please note where that character fits into things, because I haven't seen much besides the films and some video games and perusing some of the books, which I cannot claim to have read.

EDIT to say that Question 7 on the poll Should read "R2D2 doesn't even have the Powers of the Force"

I've watched all 6 movies, been a while since I've seen the original trilogy, but when has R2D2 ever demonstrated any force abilities? I'm pretty sure as a non-biological thing he's incapable of using the force, even before the introduction of the whole midochlorian stuff. Robots can't use the force, any cybernetic parts can't channel it. Hence why Darth Vader can't use force lightning.

I think he's pretty damn resourceful and can handle a lot tougher situations than people might think, but I wouldn't put him on par with anyone who's ever used a lightsaber.

Is this like a joke topic or something? I'm a little confused since robots do not use the force. R2D2 is a great character though, perfect comedic relief.

I can see what you're getting at. When you think of it, R2D2 is basically the puzzle piece that links all the stories together... well he's always around when you need him I guess. But no I don't think he has the force. Unless he's clouding all of our minds to make us think he doesn't *dun dun dun*

I postulate that while R2-D2 does not have the force, he does indeed have a portal into hammer space. Over the course of the 6 movies, the little bastard has pulled out more tools then his entire mass should allow, figuring in power sources, actual processing equipment, and locomotion equipment.

And since hammer space is a far grander tool then being able to move little bits of stuff around (Unless we're delving into books and video games, where Jedi and Sith can force choke entire fleets of interstellar war craft without even putting down their morning coffee), I can safetly say that though R2-D2 does not have the force, he's a shit ton better then the dimwitted, easily fooled Jedi George Lucas has conceived.

Actually it was droids who first used the force. Back before the first Sith war Odysseus Prime (Godfather droid of the Aether Collective) developed the process of transferring force (badly explained as mediclorites or wutever in the movies) from machine to man, giving rise to the first 'Jedi'. Quickly this led into a conflict between good and evil know as the Sith Wars. Here droids were first utilized as foot soldiers and the Aether Collective quickly realised that they needed to go into hiding or be dragged into the middle of a conflict which they felt removed from (without human emotions there is no 'light' or 'dark' side in the Aether). So staying underground, meddling only slightly to keep stuff in balance. In order to do this they set off R2D2, the most skilled of all the Aether Collective, to keep the force in balance within the Corelian Empire and well, the greater galaxy. As far as movie canon goes there is only subtle hints at R2D2's use of force. Probably the best known was his use of force lighting aboard Jabba's Sand Skimmer when he zaps Salacious Crumb and the telekinesis when supposedly 'launching' Luke Skywalkers lightsaber at the pit of Carcoon. We all know R2 units down have ejector holdings, they are just repair units, lol.

Do machines GET the force? You can question about Grievous having light sabers, but umm...he was a lifeform.

As a service droid, R2D2 has the advantage of being severely underestamated and even ignored at times. He is, in fact, smarter than the average bot and that's where I believe his edge is. Lord knows he hasn't got much else. Wouldn't call him powerful in anything, though... He can be basically beaten with a harsh kick.

R2D2 could be beaten with one well placed blaster shot, as what happened on Endor. He also was knocked out during the last attack run on the original Death Star. Sorry, he's a pretty awesome droid but still just a droid.

These are all good points, thanks. But I'll still present some evidence to point up my theory,so it can be objected to or, hopefully corroborated.I'll try to put the conjectural stuff in *asterisks*...

I decided to start with Episode I - I wanted to start at IV but it makes more sense this way. You'll soon see that our little buddy is the glue that holds it all together, and therefore the strongest or most powerful(crucial?) to all.

So to start off: he's a little Blockade-running astromech (*who probably has dreams of being a fighter co-pilot.How can he make this happen?Hard work and manipulation of reality is how, to start with*).
It is critical to remind you all that he is ultra-smooth and debonair, never at a loss for words and universally understood and liked by all, even the bad guys.(possible exception: C-3PO,but more on that later). He is handy to have around and is always the smartest guy in the room. His luck borders on the supernatural (why?) and his sense of timing is superb, allowing him to complete some secondary yet very important tasks and still be around to save everyone's hash at the end...Time after Time after Time....and it goes on like that for a while.

Episode I : In the beginning he is part of an elite team of astromechs helping to run a blockade for the Queen, no less(but he's always hobnobbing with the rich and famous, isn't he?He's like the Keith Moon of outer space).Only the best for the Queen ,we can assume. But they get busted and have to land on Tatooine.(*R2D2 may have been looking for a pilot to train so he could be a fighter co-pilot*)He helps a kid win a pod race by souping up his hot-rod,and then later they get into a fighter and have the time of thier lives, saving the day in the process. This will become a theme as the movies progress.

Episode II --- Having established himself as a natural hero,he fights crime with his partners Obi-Wan and Anakin. He realizes that his new buddy has some problems and like a good friend, goes back with him to make sure dude's mom is ok.Well, things get a little messed up on the mom front, and his buddy flips out and gives in to some dark rage,(*which has to make R2D2 reevaluate the friendship*)...but he continues to back the guy up and even attends The Queen's secret wedding to Anakin, because he is the best friend of them both.He also helps out on Geonosis.

Episode III--- He whips all kinds of butt in this one and appears to use the force a couple of times. Some may think that it was an automated anti-gravity tool that held up those battle droids, but I'm betting Force, because Lucas wanted to show it in the last film to come out.He decided to sever his ties with Darth Vader because the dude was flat-out evil by then, and he repulsed the ladies, but mainly because he was evil as F*$K.
*He also might have "suggested" to all concerned that "It wouldn't be a good idea to wipe this droid's memory"* Then, as did most of the good yet powerful characters, he drifted into semi-obscurity,but since he was the most powerful he went back to doing one of the things he did best: Blockade running.

This is getting a little long, and I've got to roll,so I'll have to stop here.I'll be back later today to run through the older movies and to present some stuff I left out.

EDITed - For one clarification and two typos.I'm not going to fix the misspelled word in the poll.

If your going to bring up powers that he might have had but didn't show because he was using mind tricks. Then I present a counter theory.

The most powerful being in the Star Wars universe is Pinkie Pie from Ponyville, Equestria.
She has shown a common ability to ignore all physical laws and could easily have entered the Star wars universe. There she used her reality warping powers to save Luke from the dark Side With secret offscreen Parties. She then guided lukes Shot into the core with her teleportation abilities and later Helped Luke escape from Darth Vader(This was all offscreen of course) No one ever talked about it because the Rebel Alliance didn't want to be known to be consorting with Cartoon Ponies. She also has shown the classic "DarkSide" that all powerful users of the force require.

Srsly, You have to go by what was in the movies, not what you think might have been going on when the cameras stop rolling.

I somewhat agree well not in the force but R2D2 is held high regard. If we are talking about the stuff inbetween and after the movies like the novels and what not, I read that R2D2 didn't get his mind wipe so he still remember everything during episode 4,5 and 6 and also he was still alive in the futre as a historian in the Jedi Temple (C3PO however didn't live that long). However the film and the other stuff are consider to be different universes.
The only thing I would like to know is who built him and his time before becoming one of the Queen Aastromech?

Sorry for my long delay: I have been offered an opportunity that I could not pass up,and the escapist forums (as wicked cool as they are) had to take a back seat...sorry TEM,I'm gravedigging here,but I swear I have a good reason...I promised to put forth more evidence of R2 (Artoo) being the protagonist (There ! I said it) of the whole entire(purposefully redundant) Star Wars shmeer(sp?){millieu? ---- Universe?---Canon? <----- Yeah, I guess so}

So :

Episode IV : First off,the star of the show is up to his old blockade-running tricks (it was the 70's --Trucking was cool) his old master shows up...looking for HIM!
He and his primary foil/whipping-boy (C-3P0) get away(this will become a theme) only to be "captured" as many serial heroes are apt to do.Then he is reunited with an old Colleague's son (Luke, hell R2 is basically his Godfather) and an old colleague (Ben "Obi wan" Kenobi...R2's old partner on the force with Anakin Skywalker<--Pun).*Don't forget that R2 has already been here and done that, and also because he has some sort of beef with Jabba the Hutt(all blockade-runners do)and R2 never forgets a debt or a burn( HIS memory was NOT wiped )--- {and Chewbacca was first mate due to the blood-debt,not because he was inferior}*

Mainly remember that "these are Not the droids you're looking for"---Are you SURE Ben Kenobi was responsible for that" ---for Everyone around? Hmm?--I'm not.Even though Ben spoke the words...Yes R2 is that good.

They get busted again of course,in order to rescue the Princess...And R2 sacrifices Obi-wan to buy some time (eggs, meet Omellete). Then they break away for the (nth) time.* But R2 wants to blow this Toll-booth up *

Fast-forward to the trench of the Death Star : Darth Vader says " the force is strong with this one"....Hey , he ain't talking about Luke ...He means his old partner, his old astromech...HIS OLD FRIEND !!! --OK who guides the Photon torpedoes? R2 had been hit already *so he may have channelled some of his force to Luke*.I actually think that Luke had a large part in "forcing" those torpedoes in,mainly because Ben Kenobi talked to him.--*I also think that R2 had a good mental hold on Han Solo... a fellow Blockade-Runner who may have been easily manipulated and who R2 obviously used on numerous occasions almost like he used to use Anakin,Obi-wan and Yoda in the old days.

Have you seen Star Wars?

I think it actually needs asking again. Have you 'seen' Star Wars? Like, even one of them?

R2D2 is the luckiest service droid in the Star Wars galaxy, that is a fact. However, C3P0 (or is it C3PO, I'm only a mild fan), is most certainly the favourite of the two, for Luke Skywalker, and Anikan Skywalker, R2 possess 0 force powers, and has absoloutley 0 strengths besides he's ingenuity, against any formidable enemy that isn't a giant machine, he is useless.

Of course, this could be a joke, but if its not, hope you've got your facts straight now, oh, and really, go watch the last 3 Star Wars movies, they are quite excellent, you might even learn something too :)

EDIT: By last 3, I do not mean to say the newest 3, but rather episodes 4, 5 and 6.

(Off Topic: Ooo, new catcha, nice... ok its actually shit, its trying to make me watch a stupid bloody clip because its first catcha wasn't readable *hits F5* finally a readable f*cking catcha)
