Poll: Rage enemies can take WAY too much damage!

OK, so I recently got to have a little bit of hands-on time with Rage at GAMEFEST in the UK. Overall I quite liked it, but one thing that irked me somewhat is that enemies tend to be able to take huge, unrealistic amounts of damage before going out down the count. Cultists wearing little more than rags can soak up a whole clip of pistol ammo or 3 shotgun shells before kicking the bucket.

First off, for those that have played the game/watched videos of it, do you get this feeling as well?

Then, for discussion value, what's your opinion of enemies that can take unrealistically large amounts of damage in games (except when explained well, such as with personal force-fields, armour etc.)?

Played Rage at Eurogamer today and I agree. At first I thought my aim was terrible, then I realized that even on the odd occasion when it wasn't, I still had to unload a few shotgun shells into a cultist's sternum before he'd go away.

My opinion of this sort of thing is that it can work very well in certain circumstances. Borderlands did it quite well, for example. The way Rage does it makes me kinda frustrated. Fine line.

Borderlands was cartoony and over the top. Rage is much more grounded and going for that ever-present gritty realism. Very resilient enemies just don't make sense in that world/tone.

Well, damn. I don't like bullet sponge enemies.

Rage was looking mildly promising too.

My point was that having bullet-sponge enemies can sometimes work, as in the case of over-the-top cartoony action games like Borderlands; but in Rage it creates dissonance between gameplay and narrative where the narrative is informed by the gritty tone and aesthetic. We appear to be in complete agreement, sir.

Is it possible it was a kind of amped up version? Making the enemies harder to slow you down on and make it seem like you played more game than you did?

Also, another feature of the game that is breaking the immersion for me:

As I'm sure you all know, the game features mad-max style combat racing. Well, if you die in a race, you just respawn in glowing car and continue the race! This kind of shit was fine in crash team racing and mario kart, NOT here!

Doubtful. They didn't let us play very long and I would have thought they wouldn't want people to feel like the game is too hard. Besides, all the videos I've seen of the game would parallel my experiences with it. I'm pretty sure the bad guys will have too much health except on the easiest setting, which will be a cakewalk and not worth playing.

This damage issue is one of the reasons why I am not getting Rage. Even since Quake the ID games have been going downhill. The first Doom games were as awesome as they were in part because of the mowing down baddies. I don't want to shoot a guy in the face twelve times before he drops, it's frustrating and annoying. (I also decided against Rage when I found out it was not actually an open world game.)

Yeah, I was seconds from reserving and preloading this game but after hearing of how short the game is, hearing this from you about them being damage sponges and seeing that they expect to charge console prices for the PC release I passed on this game completely. I'll wait for the reviews and most likely I'll wait until they patch/mod the game.

I agree with waiting. I do want this game, but there are a few concerns I have. I'll give ID my money, but I might wait for a price drop first if it doesn't turn out to be as Epic as I had hoped.

Short? The hell it is.

Rage will be about 15 hours long on average, according to Tim Willits. That's almost three times the length of the vast majority of modern FPS games.

Regardless of how much willits is pumping it up, 15 hours is still short in my opinion, especially considering how much they are yanking us over the price of the game. 15 Hours just hardly sounds like it's worth $60 at this point. I'll wait for the reviews and then decide.

I hate to say it, because I'm normally not a proponent of this, but I think they are killing themselves with their multiplayer decisions. People gladly shell out $60 for the CoD and Battlefield games and yet they have shorter campaigns. The obvious trick is the multiplayer. ID basically said they didn't want the same old online battles, and thus there is only racing (correct me if I am wrong, I haven't looked into Rage for a long while now). I believe the FPS crowd is turned off by the lacking key-component to their genre.

Urgh, I cant stand bullet sponges... but then I cant say I'm terribly surprised in an ID game.
