the only game i know to have a sex scene in it was Mass Effect and it made the game seem more realistic for me. (Also i got an achievement for it!)

why is (at some times rather graphic) violence and themes like drug dealing, prostitution etc ok in games, but show a bare leg and imply sex and everyone gets all worked up?
It's because violence is completely normal and natural, while sex is an abhorrent affront to the very face of God. Obviously.

I don't care, so long as it makes sense and is done in a way that makes sense. No sex just so the protagonist can then lose someone later on. There are better ways to do that I think.

I think the issue is that sex is intended to be the result of a mature and long-term involvement, which games don't really provide. Even if you made a game where you play as a married man making love to his wife, the gamer is still getting gratification in the short term - which is still better than most movies, obviously, but the issue comes with the players involvement. Maybe it's ok for Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock to bone after spending 90 minutes together on a speeding bus (pardon the reference but I caught Speed on TV yesterday and it was the first thing to spring to mind), but we're not involved in that decision. In games we are.
I'm not saying sex in games can't be done tastefully, or done well. They really can. I think Mass Effect was a good example, especially considering how cinematic the game was overall. There are many games with a strong story focus that can benefit from a love/sex component, as long as it doesn't become a crutch for storytellers every time there's a guy and a girl in the same room.

On the other hand, violence can happen quickly, unexpectedly, and all the damn time.

Sex for the sake of sex is pornography, and there's plenty of that on the internet if you're interested. There are ways to tastefully include and portray sex in any story, and there's no reason to ignore a perfectly good movie or game just because it has one scene you frown on. Do like the little kids and cover your eyes while it happens.

I LIKED the scene in Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy. Why? Because you had two characters who thought the world was going to end, that everyone was going to die (well, one of them had, but that's beside the point), so what do they do? A life-affirming activity. Something that feels good and reminds them of the closeness of human relationships, of what they're fighting for. That's not gratuitous, that fits right in with the story. If you saw it in a movie you'd react differently.

I'd like to see the "Mature" label live up to its name.
My main problem with it was that it seemed very out of character - the two had barely spoken up until that point, then suddenly she was all 'I love you', 'I need you' etc... Maybe if they'd had a bit more involvement before then it would have been better, but it just came across as an afterthought

I enjoy it if its used in good taste, like in Mass Effect, but when its used in bad taste, like in dead or alive, it just gives the industry a bad name.

Sex is evil and against God, and watching it will turn you blind or pregnant.

Seriously though: my opinion on the matter is a great big resounding 'meh'.

Because america was founded by puritans, and those social taboos run really really really deep.

I voted for 'the more the better'. Seriously:

- Leisure Suit Larry is the best adventure series.
- Romancing Aerie, Viconia and Jaheira (and Anomen) in Baldur's Gate 2 really spices up the game.
- Or even better, romancing the fiendish Annah or the heavenly Fall-from-Grace in Planescape: Torment.
- Spending the night with a tender elf, a brutal half-orc female or a sheep in Arcanum. You tried it and you loved it.- In some games you just know you will end up beaten and without your wallet if you follow that sexy female, but you will do it anyway (even if you're a KGB agent).

Or maybe I'm just projecting my delicious thoughts on you all, for which I'm explicitly not sorry.

If it's done well, like Mass Effect, it's fine.

If it's done poorly, like God of War, or any of the GTA games, it's just pointless and used for shock value.

The whole reason sex and games don't mix well with people who never play video games is that sex is taboo. The only time it is seen by people outside of the ones taking part in it are porn and r-rated movies. This brings up a good point. Who else is sick of people who never play video games telling us what video games are and are not? "O, Halo was used to train those snipers who killed innocent people." "O, children play these games. How can you have sexual content in them?" "O, an 8 year old jumped off a 30+ story building immitating a wrestling move from a video game." It's like letting children run the government (no pun/joke intended.)

I think most people would agree that if it's implemented well and part of a story that's being told or perhaps sexy clothing and armour as an artistic direction that adds to the feel/style of the game it can be a very good thing.

Sex mini-games, bouncing breasts and the likes are just horrible. I wouldn't say they ruin good games but they certainly don't add anything to them.

Done well in: Mass Effect (I didn't even know there was an opportunity to have sex on my first playthrough)
Done Poorly in: pfff... Everything else?

lol.

EDIT: Also, the fact that Mass Effect had sex in it created some controversy on the news networks when it first came out. I remember watching FOX News (ew) doing a report on the sex in the video game. :( American society needs to progress into the 20th century.

Dragon Age and Mass Effect pull it off respectively and tastefully. I do however get annoyed with games like ASS BLASTER 25!!!111!11 where the game suffers for sex.
Basically this.

Just like with any art form it has to be done tastefully or else its just stupid and tacky.
Pretty much sums it up

True story. There was an article on the forums a couple months ago. It was pathetic.

Yes. Fox loves to dip their wic in attacking video games. There was like, 1 shot of rendered titties. Nothing more. Why isn't anyone doing anything about the archives of free internet porn that is easily available to anyone with internet connection?

If it's fitting. Don't add or remove content to make a game more or less mature content-wise, just put in whatever adds to the experience.
