As a fan of the RPG genre, it's kind of sad I haven't already played two of the most important games in the RPG genre. I was planning on getting one or both of them and if I like it, the sequels as well.

However, I'm worried as the games are pretty old. (yes, five years are considered old in the gaming world) As a gamer who has played Oblivion and GTAIV, I was worried if the graphics would be too terrible for me to go on.

get BG2, the sequel, or get the whole BG deal. It's all about BG2.
This.

The first Baldur's Gate really isn't that special except as a prelude to BG2. If your choice is between just the first Baldur's Gate and KotOR, I'd go for KotOR. But if you can get BG+BG2+expansions, go with that.

Hmm, this reminds me, I never got a chance to play the second Kotor and I heard it wasn't a good sequel...just curious as to why that was?

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is easily among the best games I have ever played, and I continue to play it today ten years after the game was released. It's *that* good!

You can pick up the full series in one box easily enough, here's an example. For that price you'd be a fool not to buy em. Do it!

The original game isn't as good as its sequel, Baldur's Gate 2, but considering as far as I'm concerned nothing is as good as its sequel, that's far from a bad thing. It's still a ridiculously good game, especially if you've installed the tutu mod which allows you to play the first game through the second games much-improved engine, plus that allows you to install the BG1 NPC project mod which gives more BG2 style dialogue, making BG1 even better!

All that said, Knights of the Old Republic is also a great rpg. Not as good as BG2, but damned fine and certainly worth playing for any fan of the rpg genre.

Get both! If you absolutely must pick just one, then I'd say the bundle I linked above. But considering you could get both that and kotor for less than half the price of any new game, it'd be silly not to get both.

Lucasarts rushed the game out the door before it was finished unfortunately, so it was just unfinished. The characters and story are both fantastic, in some ways even better than in the first game. Problem was that about 3/4 of the way through the game it just fell apart, bugs, incomplete quests, was pretty bad.

There's actually a mod out that fixes that though called the Restored content mod. Still not perfect, but with the mod installed I'd say Kotor 2 is easily comparable to the first. I personally actually prefer the plot of the second game since it takes a different approach to the whole jedi/sith thing. Very interesting.

If you can somehow get Baldurs gate 2, then do just that.
Baldurs gate 1 isn't all that great. A little better than Kotor to be honest.
Especially since you can take it on a usb stick and play it anywhere :)

Pc or not? Baldur's gate for the pc was SWEET if a little dated. The sequel was even better. The pc version is NOTHING like the PS2 version of the same name.

KOTOR is absolutely worth it. I have had a lot of difficulty getting into the Baldur's Gate series because it is so dated, however.

Both yes seeing as it is an option, but were it between one or the other... I'd go with KOTOR.

Baulders can get pretty boring. And KOTORs turn-based, which isn't my thing.

KOTOR, if you like turn-based

its not really bad at all, just bug infected and the...*ending*..*shudders*...and they took out a whole chunk of the game, which if you have mods you can get back, just be prepared to have some glitches and bugs if you play it, otherwise its awesome

Best answer, whole lotta thanks.

I'll try both, but if BG1 is giving me a hard time then I might just jump to BG2.

And $16.99! I thought it would cost at least $30.

I say play through Baldur's Gate 1 first, it's not as good as BG2, but it's still a damned good rpg. BG2 is like Mass Effect 2, it's simply better if you import a character from the first game (Yes you can do that!). Not only are you playing a character you're already familiar with, but the story makes much more sense. And with the mods I mentioned installed, the difference in quality between 1 and 2 is much less notable.

The game is hard at first though. A single wolf can be a serious threat to a lvl 1 charcter, which is what you start at in Baldur's Gate. Just stick with it and don't give up. Playing a fighter for your first character will make it a bit easier since they can take the most hits and deal the most damage early on, but still, just be sure to quicksave often. It's the Q key. Your new best friend! That and the pause key, space, so that you can plan your battles more carefully.

If you ever need any help, feel free to ask as well. I've played through Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 multiple times and am happy to introduce the series to new gamers.
