I'm a shotty sniper. For Halo 3, I'll use a sniper and a shotgun. For COD4, I'll use a sniper (either the Dragunov or the Barrett .50 Cal, depends on map) with a shotgun as secondary (either pump action or semi-auto, depends on map).

Snipe behind cover, with an AK-47 prepped and ready with Flashes to stun them while I fill them full of lead.

Cover is vital!

I have no preference. I use whatever gun I can find.

I hate people who constantly snipe though. I mean those people who stay in O-N-E spot the whole match, know where the sniper rifle spawns on every map, and refuse to fight unless they have the rifle. It just annoys me. I don't care how good they can shoot with it, whenever someone does that it screams "this is all I can do and I'm useless in any other situation."

I prefer to snipe as far as possible, but try to make sure I have short/mid range weapons just in case. If I was armed in real life (note that I had military weapons training at high school...), I would snipe, but arm myself with a shotgun as a secondary weapon, then some sort of sword (dual wield, of course) for up close and personal. Only as a last resort, of course...

I Prefer the up-close, because running across the map to tea-bag an opponent begins to loose its luster, but I'm not opposed to the sniper in the right situation.

NO SCOPE FTW
in L4D, sniping is really good on expert.
Personally I really like sniping, although CSS i'm kind of bad at it.
Besides i have an airsoft sniper rifle, so much fun

I've been called a 'close range weapons bastard'. I'm still waiting for a class in a game named that.
Hurm. I'll take that down for consideration.

I too have a great love for close-quarters combat. The only way it can get better is if it's close-quarters while moving very fast.

Pistol and knife is the way to go, probably 60-70% of my kills are done this way. For the rest I prefer to use a high-mobility weapon like the M4 in COD4, I like to move fast but have the range and fire rate if I need it.

Personally I'm more of a sniper. I have good aim and there's something about being a shadow, killing everyone before they can tell where I am.

That said, however, I like almost any weapon, and am known to often pick an M3 shotgun or P90 SMG over the MA14 or AK47 in CS:S.

I also dislike being a "campy" sniper...You know, the kind of guy that just sits in the same place for half an hour shooting people... I think I was possibly the first, or one of the first, "rushing snipers" in Day of Defeat Source...Nobody saw it coming either... While all my allies with machine guns were getting mowed down, I rushed through with a sniper, killed everyone in the process, and after running out of bullets proceeded to hold the place for about 2 more respawn waves with my pistol... We won that one...

the only tactic for a stresssssssful player like me is e.g. CoD 5, I grab a mixed class with a PTRS and a Gewehr. I spaz out when people get too close to me. They spaz out when they're too far away from me. Due to overbulleting. PAINFUL overbulleting.
Teehee.

In single-player or co-op, I'll usually opt for the sniper rifle and hang back. I'm not fast enough with it for deathmatches though, so I tend to stick to assault rifles and other mid-range weapons for those.

I always go with the shotgun.

In my opinion, anyone can pick up a sniper rifle and put an instantly lethal bullet in an unaware target without fear of retribution...that's easy.

It is considerably more difficult to have to run from one side of an open map to the other while dodging sniper fire, rockets, grenades and other shotgun/smg weilding players along the way to deal with some camping sniper tucked away in some dark corner, only to be blown up by a concealed landmine or no-scoped (meaning you have to go through all of that again).

It is provably more difficult (especially in recent times) to go for CQB than to snipe but in my experience...that extra challange makes me somewhat better.

I like rocket launchers. I enjoy having to properly lead my target, and blowing junk up is just fun. imho there's nothing more awesome than managing to "snipe" someone (or possibly multiple people) from across the map with a well-placed rocket, and then watching their tiny body(s) helplessly ragdoll away. Warms the cockles it does.

For me it is all situational. If I can get a clean shot woth the sniper rifle from across the map I'll take it. Although I am not a patient player so I can't sit there in one spot for 20 minutes lookin down the scope. I prefer to run around and be free (until the person who does have said patience removes my skull).

Up close. It's a lot more satisfying to blow someone away when you can see the whites of their eyes.

It depends on the game and map.

In CoD4 I'm all about up close and personal because I always feel like I'm not contributing if I'm sniping. I rarely get a great score sniping and since everyone else is running around like crazy you tend to become a target. If I need any distance usually I'll go assault rifle w/ ACOG and an mp5.

In CS:S snipers can be extremely helpful and if you play in a league you are guaranteed to find snipers at any range. Personally I like the scout or scoped assault rifle for mobility but I can pull out the awp and blast faces off.

And I rarely play sniper in Team Fortress... The sniper always feels useless and cheap.
