I myself am considering and likely will get a tattoo. This tattoo is to show my appreciation for life and knowledge. To this end i've got this crazy idea in my head i want a dragon, starting from my upper left back, coming over my shoulder and finishing at just above my nipple.

I'm doing it because while yes, i do want a tattoo because they're damn cool (in my opinion, don't challenge me on that because your'll just sound like an asshole). But I don't want to just get some random skull flaming garbage just for the hell of it. I want it to mean something.

I know some people want one for looks, and others swear against it. So escapist, i want to know your thoughts.

I would only get one if it had some important meaning to me. Nothing superficial, but if it was something deep, or helped me remember a time in my life, I would likely get it done.

If I ever get a tattoo, it'll have to be something meaningful, I don't want to get anything just because it looks cool now, but might regret later on down the line. So, I might go a very long time before I decide to walk that path. If I ever do at all.

I would definitely get a Russian prison style tattoo. Come on, whose gonna mess with someone when they have a scary gulag tattoo?

Edit: Unfortunately, I just remembered these tattoos have to be earned. Damn it.

if you want to get something original that stands for life... I have no idea why you picked a dragon.

Just so you know... tit/shoulder blade tattoos kinda hurt a bit. Might want to start a bit smaller and somewhere also. In addition, beware: Tattoos are addicting.

Anyway... I have two tattoos. One is an orange on black lambda (My geek tattoo) and the other is a Latin wrap around on my arm (The inscription over Hells gate. And yes, I know it was originally in Italian). I got that one to remember where one goes is one isn't careful.

So yah, I guess my tattoos mean something to me.

Oh I know, its taken me 4 years of thinking so far and i'll be thinking for another 6 months at the very least. My idea may very well change.

I'm designing the whole thing out myself and keeping it in mind every day though and every time I wonder if I could get something more unique done I always revert back to the dragon.

I've always grown up around dragons. They're important to me.

Doesn't stand for life, shows appreciation for life. Dragons, in theory, were ancient and wise and the non-evil ones showed a great amount of compassion in times of need. I'm in love with that idea.

And I know it'll hurt quite a bit. I suppose i'll just man up and take the pain.

I mean hell, i was awake when my toe was being cut open, this surely can't be much worse... right? XD

I might get one if I could find something worth writing on myself. Maybe my personal philosophy? ... if I could summarize it a bit. In Arabic of Chinese then?

But of course, the purpose of a tattoo is to be a display who's meaning gets associated with the bearer. Otherwise, I might as well just write an essay or something and publish it on the interwebz. So both for meaning and for looks?

I am going to get a tattoo of the United States Marine Cor symbol when I complete basic, because like Russian prison tattoos, these are earned. OORAH!

If I went to the Olympics I'd get one (like competed) but otherwise I don't think I'd consider it.

I sure hope you're Infantry. Otherwise, getting a tattoo done for finishing Basic now a days (Or should I say, Basic for pansies) will make you look like one hell of a poser for the rest of your career...

EDIT:

Oh... so your getting Japanese dragon...

...God, I hate the look of those things...

And its not really a sharp pain... its the pain and frustration of being jabbed thousand of times with a metal pin and not being able to move, shout, or complain.

I want to get a tattoo, mostly just to see what it's like to get one.

I've already decided on a motive. Just some text: "LOOK - I have a TATTOO!" (In a fancy, eye-catching font, of course.)

For the meaning. I'd like a sleeve tattoo filled with everything that's important to me, like quotes, band logos etc. If I were to have something that big though, I'd have to have it perfected. Apart from that, I'd like some smaller tattoos like a Pi symbol, or YCKMMF, or a no entry sign around my asshole.

I fail to see how a dragon represents your love of life and knowledge, but if it has some special meaning to you, then go for it.

Careful though, because a tattoo of the size you're talking about is going to cost a small fortune, especially if you want it in color.
Eh. Shoulder to nipple in color is probably around 800-1000 dollars.

Really, that's a drop in the bucket when it comes to some tattoos.

All mine are artworks that I have designed myself. Some have more meaning then others but I got them because they look good.

I feel like an elitist shmuck for saying this but I liked tattoos back before they were cool. Now everyone and their mum has one and I just don't want to bother.

Eh, i can deal with not complaining.

And I wasn't talking about japanese dragons. Those things disgust me.

That is quite possibly the best tattoo idea ever. I think it trumps Steve-o's tattoo of himself on his back.
No way, that things hilarious :p
